Ladanum or Labdanum is an oleoresin from several species of Cistus,
including C.albiflorus, C.creticus, C.ladanifer and C.maculatus. It is
the best plant substitute for ambergris from sperm whales and is
important
in perfume manufacture. It was traditionally collected by whipping the
bushes so that the exudate adheres to the leather thongs, or in Crete by
combing it from the hides of sheep and goats with a leather rake. Today
Labdanum oil is extracted from the resin and branches by a process of
steam
distillation. Labdanum is now produced commercially is France and Spain.
This oil was so highly valued it was an ingredient in a holy ointment
mentioned in the Bible.

Today Labdanum oil is most often used as a fixative for perfumes; it
also
lends a musky, balsamic fragrance to balance heavily floral scents.

Medicinally the oil is said to promote circulation, which may ease
muscle
and menstrual pain. Labdanum oil is also said to have numerous benefits
for
the skin as well. Its antiseptic and astringent properties are said to
help heal wounds, strengthen connective tissue, speed skin regeneration,
dry
acned and oil skin and treat eczema and itchy rashes. On an emotional
level, Labdanum oil is said to boost self-confidence and soothe restless
anxiety.

Labdanum oil contains terpenes, phenol, eugenol and acetic and formic
acids, all of which contribute to its antiseptic, astringent,
expectorant,
sedative and anti-inflammatory qualities. In addition Labdanum oil
stimulates
the flow of blood, which helps reduce swelling.

Pure Labdanum oil has a rather unusual and clingy aroma. However, when
it is
diluted in lotion, alcohol or other suitable base oils it emits a subtle
and flowery fragrance.
