Is this true? According to some, Meteor Garden was actually based on a soap opera entitled Hana Yori Dango (wc actually began as an anime).

yeah.. it began as an anime.... the characters pa nga look like rip-offs from slam dunk. lolz

That's correct.
Though, I beg to digress about the ""HYD as visual rip-offs of Slam Dunk" bit...
The art of the manga is odd, to say the least. (At least, odd by shôjo standards.) The animators just tried to emulate the design the best they could, and it came out looking like that. :) Not that I mind though.
Although a girl who knew Meteor Garden first actually somewhat dissed (at least that's what I think) the manga since (and I quote) "the guys in this comic look NOTHING like F4."
BTW, the manga hasn't been completed yet ... like OMG!. -__-

I've just read some anime episode summaries of Hana Yori Dango. They're exactly the same with the TV Drama (go figure!). Yes, the group's name is really "F4" which gets reduced to like "F2" or something... XD. Anyways, since I never watched a series of Meteor Garden, might as well just watch Hana Yori Dango.
Slam Dunk characters? I don't see the resemblance... --;

Napakatagal na ng anime nito. Pero yung Manga hanggang ngayon yata meron pang bago. Yung video nya nga sa VCD ko e sobrang luma na. Pero yung story...80-90% yung kinuha ng MG sa HYD. :) Sala mas kumpleto at mas brutal yung nasa HYD. :)
Yung MG 2 walang pinagbasehan sa HYD o sa manga. Ewan ko...ginawan lang ng sariling kwento para mas gumanda yung story. :lol:

GRABE! napadaan ako sa comic alley megamall yesterday... nagbebenta na rin pala sila ng mga MG stuff.... pati mga wall scrolls and sang ka terbang buttons pati ung tv nila, MG ang palabas.... :o

In the tradition of reviving old forae (thanks to Minami for the inspiration ;) ), I'll add some news...
Hana Yori Dango is now COMPLETE, at a whopping 36 VOLUMES!!! I'm only not sure, though, if the number includes the Special Character Book which also features ... you guessed it, the cast and production of the hit Chinese drama Liu Xing Hua Yuan (better known to us as Meteor Garden).

and in the series, Makino gets involved with Tsukasa Doumyouji, Rui Hanazawa and the other f4 member..gyuuu...and the ending of the series is sooo...er...weird...basta...maganda lang sya sa umpisa..pero habang tumatagal e..=__=;;
