Im very sure not everyone remembers Mr. Carl Macek, unless you're one of those guys who actually read the credits after every anime show.
I stumbled into this website called Anime Acadamy and had my first read about this guy. You can check out his profile
here.So whats so special about him? His name caught my attention when i saw the "Profile" section of this site and clicked it, and my suspicions were correct: He was the one who organized HARMONY GOLD back in 1984, the company that introduced ROBOTECH to the US. He was the guy who bought licenses for Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada, then chopped them all up and combined them into one series.
Because of this, he was soon nicknamed as Carl the Butcher for his cheezy dubbings and script, basically enraging anime purists for hacking up 3 beautifully rendered stand-alone anime shows. But its not entirely his fault. According to the profile, he had only 3 months to make sense out of 3 anime shows, and make the final cut by the end of the 3rd month. But against all odds (he was thought to flop the US target market for introducing japanese cartoons) his hacked-up space drama Robotech brought anime into the American psyche like a tidal wave. And he was the first to bring anime into American theaters, and that first anime happened to be the english dubbed AKIRA.
So i guess i owe my anime enthusiasm to this guy, the name who i saw hanging around the credits section of every Robotech show and Akira english dubbed vcd, as well at the back credits printed in every toybox which had Robotech action figurines and RPG sourcebooks as well.
