Beginning April 7, certain regions of Tokyo featured in Osamu Tezuka's classic "Tetsuwan Atom" (known abroad as "Astro Boy") anime have adopted a special kind of currency, called "Atom Money." Atom Money is measured in units called horsepower, with a single horsepower equivalent to one yen, and three denominations of paper money (10, 100, and 200 Horsepower bills) have been released. Atom Money can be spent in areas including Takadanobaba and Waseda University's surroundings.
Tokyo's Takadanobaba district is the birthplace of Tetsuwan Atom, and this new form of currency was instituted as a means of promoting volunteerism and charity work in the area. The Atom Money community project is managed by an executive council that includes Waseda University students, local merchants, and representatives of non-governmental organizations. Atom Money is redeemable for goods and services at participating stores, which may be identified by a special storefront sticker.
Atom Money is awarded for good deeds. Individuals participating in volunteer activities or engaging in ecologically-minded practices (e.g., bringing their own shopping bags to stores and chopsticks to restaurants instead of using disposable ones) are eligible to receive Atom Money as a reward.
Individuals involved with the Atom Money project say that encouraging both community identity and social volunteerism is exactly the sort of thing that "Tetsuwan Atom" was about.
