Report from Liberalia![]() 2nd January 2007: Triple the Pleasure, 2.87 Times the Fun! Prepared by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Random Textbox Inputs Forum News Population: 139 nations Regional Influence: Very High UN Delegate: Anchova Regional News >Prime Minister Elections Over The regional Prime Minister elections have again rolled around, being a contest between Forthampton of the Centre-Right/Libertarian coalition, and Fernetti of the Popular Front. Although the elections had a few minor hiccups, they generally went okay, electing Fernetti as the new Prime Minister of Liberalia, making this his second term. >New Cabinet Announced After a major reorganisation in the structure of the thing, the Cabinet for January-February 2007 is:
>Regional Population Declines Regional population has been on the downturn recently, with activity following suit, leading to widespread claims of a depression in the region. The population now stands at 139 nations, whereas a few months ago it was double this. Several members of the region have left citing either an inactive government, general unpleasantness in the region, or just their own personal reasons, including Haelhan, Prez, and even our founder Carops. The new Prime Minister, Fernetti, has pledged to tackle the downturn in activity and recruitment, instating the post of "Minister of Activity" and making it compulsory for all Cabinet members to recruit at least once a week. Plans to do activity-increasing things are afoot. >Celebrations With a holiday period including the first birthday of Liberalia, Christmas, and the New Year, many Liberalians are now as drunk as, well, a Liberalian. They have been advised not to drive until their livers come out from under the bed, where they have been hiding for the past fortnight or so. >Regional Awards and Promotions Fishyguy, keeping up with regional traditions, has handed out various awards and promotions in his end of term award-giving speech.
Recent Legislation >Legislation enacted this term mainly concerns amendments to old and outdated bills, such as the Verbal Abuse Act and Liberalian Trial Bill. Repeals to some of the more socialist acts on the books were brought to vote, but mostly failed - often by very small margins. Other acts instituted recently are the Transparent and Ethical Liberalia bill, calling for greater transparency, and protecting the rights of citizens to protest government actions. Miscellaneous >RP has suffered an implosion recently, with very little going on, creating a sort of black hole effect. We are doing our best to tackle this problem, but have stopped short of calling in leading physicists, mainly for cost reasons. >General discussions on the forum are looking up, with topics such as the recent death of ex-US president Gerald Ford, celebrating Christmas, the new year, satire from Latagon to celebrate the first birthday of Liberalia, and asking whether the Monty Python reference in the thread about Saddam Hussein's execution was in good taste (as well as several other questions). Report from Liberalia![]() 16th January 2007: Enough With The Pleasure:Fun Ratio Already Prepared by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Random Textbox Inputs Forum News Population: 157 nations Regional Influence: Very High UN Delegate: Anchova Regional News >Cabinet Positions Changed Since the last update, some of the Cabinet positions have been changed around, and we wish to publish the following changes. New DPP: Cheesyweesy New Deputy Prime Minister: Prime Minister Kurt New Defence Minister: Abbassia New Governmental Legislation Minister: Carops New Speaker: Delta Golf Sierra >Old Liberalians Return Some of Liberalia's older residents have returned to the fold, including Carops, Ardalia, and Haelhan, having left due to inactivity and protest at the previous administration. It means that a lot of what was written in the last update is now factually incorrect, but this is why we publish new ones. >Speaker Troubles Shortly after receiving the job of Speaker, Golgora turned it down, saying that the fact that the Speaker does not get a vote and thus representation in Parliament would mean that his party would have an even smaller voice in the region than they do now. After several other figures turned the job down, showing how unpopular the post is, it was finally accepted by Delta Golf Sierra, although on condition that legislation would go forward stating that the Speaker would get the chance to vote. However, his open bias in debates has led some to claim that it is bringing the neutrality of the post into question, and one amendment to the Rules of Parliamentary Procedure has been proposed banning outright the ability of the Speaker to debate legislation, making the job even more unpopular than it is now. >Recent Legislation Parliament is booming lately, due to the concerted efforts of some of our members in submitting legislation. In the past fortnight, citizens have submitted legislation on the environment, taxation, hunting, gun control (leading to the longest debate in Liberalian history), regional fitness, public transport, workers' rights, and the prohibition of spying in other regions without governmental consent. We commend the efforts of all of our citizens in this area, although it does make updating the scrolling banners outside Parliament rather hard :P >Liberalian News Service Gets Revamp Trying to bring the media of Liberalia up to date, not one but two, count them, two new media outlets have been set up. The first is the new version of the LNS News, which will be updated regularly. We hope. The second comes after the success of satirical newspaper "The Weekly Rag", and is a humorous look on the region's events, which can be found here. >Guardian Council Elections Guardian Council elections have recently taken place, although not advertised as much as elections in the past have been. Congratulations to Forthampton and Fernetti on their re-election as temporary guardians, and thanks also to Nucleawasta and Prime Minister Kurt for giving us an interesting run-off election for everybody who forgot to vote the first time. >Miscellaneous Happenings A couple of new discussions have been popping up recently, although none of them quotable. RP looks to be coming along nicely, with a new updated map courtesy of Forthampton, and some things have been posted that could probably become interesting given time and effort - the most promising one is a thread entitled "Enormous RP Coming". Recruitment has been on the up lately, with regional population expanding slightly as a result. The University has been upgraded, with a new improved faculty installed. It is hoped that they will actually deliver regular lectures, instead of just lying around the place getting free board like the previous faculty. A debate on Intelligent Design is taking place, with a multiple-thousand-word-long rebuttal submitted by Curiaistan, with subsequent rebuttals of the rebuttal adding many more words to the count, making for a great insomnia cure. More rebuttals are being written as I write, and it is widely expected to become a regional pastime, or at the very least last for a few months before the nigh-endless supply of rebuttals tapers off. And, finally, the mind of the Foreign Minister has blanked while trying to think of more things to write. Report from Liberalia![]() 3rd February January 2007: Title Removed, Or Else Prepared by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Random Textbox Inputs Forum News Population: 150 nations Regional Influence: Very High UN Delegate: Stokmarknes Regional News >Environmentalists R Us On Trial Environmentalists R Us, usually shortened to ERU, is currently on trial for being a puppet of former criminal Julio Trigman. Previous trials of people accused of being puppets of Julio Trigman have had mixed results, with Supreme Chancellor Validorium being found guilty, whereas Prime Minister Kurt had his name cleared by a trial. This case is attracting some controversy, with the issue of lawyers arising... in all previous trials, the Guardian Council (the judiciary of the region) posing questions to the defendant to answer. However, in this trial, the defendant has requested a lawyer, which there is ample legislative space to allow, and the guardians are deliberating on it. ERU maintains his innocence. >Defence Minister Switch-a-roo Abbassia's resignation from the post of Defence Minister due to personal commitments means that a new one has been appointed. Well, by "new", we mean "Carops", who by now has held the post in so many successive governments that we have lost count. After some quick research, we believe since May. >Recent Legislation Bills on hybrid cars, judicial pardons and feudalism (one of the funniest pieces of legislation to have been submitted in a long time) have recently gone up before parliament, with an amendment to the Drink Driving Act hot on their trails. >New Blog Gets Even Newer The "let's-all-create-new-media-outlets" bandwagon has certainly not left town just yet, and as testament to that, an even newer satirical blog has been published, drawing together all the issues from the "Weekly Rag", as well as including some content from other pseudo-newspapers. We anticipate that there may actually be some original content posted again at some stage too. For those interested, the blog can be found here. >Miscellaneous Happenings Lectures on the differing political systems of various real-life nations have been delivered at the University, with more expected to follow, and possibly lectures on subjects that had been anticipated before if lucky. RP is still continuing, and although there haven't been any wars recently, the Caropsyne Lower Chamber has been invaded by, well, the Upper Chamber. And finally, Liberalia would have mourned the death of Harold the duck if he weren't just made up by whoever writes this to have something that sounded good to end on. | Report from Liberalia 25th February January 2007: Title Removed, Or Else Prepared by Substitute Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fernetti Forum News Population: 139 nations Regional Influence: Very High UN Delegate: Prime Minister Kurt Regional News >Fernetti resigns< Fernetti announced his resignation as Prime Minister last week, to much suprise. In a decision no one knew about until the former announced it, Fernetti cited that the responsibility of the region was too much for someone like him, and that he didn't want to see it fall under him due to his somewhat busy schedule. Instead of the position being handed to Prime Minister Kurt, Fernetti gave RTI the job of Deputy and RTI has since taken over in the last two weeks of the term. >Enviormentalist R Us found guilty< After a long trial, Enviormentalists R Us was found guilty of being Julio Trigman. Two of JT's IPs matched two different IPs of Enviormentalists R Us, which served as a key peace of evidence in the trial. Ironically, ERU's screenshots of his facebook, which served to prove his innocence, unintentionally revealed evidence which showed that ERU was logged on JT's screenname, which the guardians took into account as a key piece of evidence. ERU defended himself, claimin he was friends with JT and that they logged on each other's aims and facebooks account, despite claiming he never knew JT before. ERU was ultimately voted guilty under a permanent ban. >Haelhan put on trial< After ERU's trial, Haelhan was placed on trial, a trial which is currently being debated by the guardians. Haelhan interupted the trial illegally 4 times, despite being warned by guardians after each time not to interupt, including a 24 hour suspension. Haelhan claims he was just doing his job of defending ERU, but the guardians had never gave him permission to do so. >Higher Education Act amendments< After a controversial period of time, the Higher Education act was voted in back to it's original form. The original version guarenteed a free and public college education, while the newer edition privatized colleges, but oftered pay-back loans to those who could not afford. Those on the left, most notably socialists, popular front and some liberal members, took great opposition to these amendments, which they felt were unfair to those who don't nessisarily get a high paying job after college education and couldn't afford to pay it back. Libertarians and those aligned with the right, defended these amendments, which they felt provided an ethic to be responsible and work hard, as well as give a break to tax payers who don't go to college. Ultimately, the higher education act amendments were voted in and re-publicized colleges. >Election Fever< Elections are back, and fever is starting to rise high! Haelhan, of the christian nationalist workers party, and Delta Golf Sierra, of the libertarian party, are among the first two candidates to join. Meanwhile, the popular front is currently voting in their candidate, with Carops, PM Kurt and Cheesyweesy competing. Meanwhile, Fernetti, retired PM, has stated he doesn't intend on running this election and wants to take a break. It seems current substitute PM RTI doesn't intend on running either. Though stay tuned in future elections..
