Hwallo! I'm BabyPanda with the
The Latest Largest Region Report!
Swome of the highlights are
the Feeders all have lost at least 1000 nations.
Europe has lost 100.
Gatesville gained 40.
The largest new region "Dream of a Ridiculous Dictator" has 315 nations.
and Cwanada is at 310, up 2 from the last report in September 06.

The feeders have taken quite a wallop.
Canada is still by far the largest founder-less userite region. The only other region like us on that list is NationStates.
This makes us unique. Only our size can effectively keep us safe, without having to radically change our policies. We should strive to keep our population growing or at least as high as possible, even in the face of decreasing new nations available in the feeders.

I've just been checking out Taijitu.
Less than a month ago they had 800 nations and now they have 1,123.

I hear Taijitu has some kind of program that informs them everytime a nation is created.

Yeah right!!!! :P
They also pay their recruiters. This may explain more than anything else.

It would certainly be possible. One way would be to execute a constant recursive query to the NationStates (Jolt) server that would change value when a new amount is reached. The changed value would indicate a new nation begin created. I'm not entirely sure how you'd identify the feeder in which it was born though.
I'm sure there's a simpler way to do it rather than a constant recursive query.

I would tentatively think XML or JAVA rather than .php, although .php would certainly enabled access to the database.

| recursive query |
Why would it need to be recursive? Also, I don't think that we have DB access, so aren't all scripts done through scraping? If you had direct access, a simple query would do the trick.

XML is a markup language, so I don't really see how it would be useful, and I'm not so sure that Java would be as useful as PHP in this case... I think that Mav was on the money, I would bank on PHP, Perl, or Python as the weapon of choice.
Probably the easiest way would be to set up a script that scraps each feeder. You would lose some entries because only a limited number of the regional activities are kept, but it would be pretty good, I think.

The Pacifics usually have around 40mins of happenings available at any one time - I don't think I've seen it drop below 15. If you ran a scrape every 15 mins, that should catch it all. I'm not sure if NS would be happy with you running something that often, though.

Me thinks Gatesville's a bit jealous of Taijitu.
