Old Ogastein - December 30, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)

NSS!

Now suddenly we learn that the Human Rights Council has piped up that the trial was unfair.

I'm a bit indifferent as to whether he lived or not.

What bugs me the most about this is that the haste in hanging him has now determined that he will never be tried and convicted for his most heinous crimes.

Omnivorous - December 30, 2006 06:56 PM (GMT)
I think that the PM/one of the key prosecutors said that he would hang before the end of the year a couple of someamountoftime back.

Does it really matter, everyone knows he's guilty and he can only hang once. I say just get it over with and move on. Why give him another trial to spew his hate and bull  .

canada6 - December 30, 2006 11:51 PM (GMT)
It's called justice. Revenge, retribution and gratification of the masses, are not examples of justice, except in westerns.

And the question is not "Why give him another trial?" The question is "Why kill him now when he was still on trial for other crimes?"
Saddam Hussein is now dead and he will never be brought to justice for the Al-Anfal Genocide.

There is no point of overthrowing a regime that doesn't respect the rule of law if you're going to replace it with another regime that doesn't respect the rule of law. That's precisely what you're suggesting.

That the current Iraqi establishment would seek to override the pursuit of justice, to serve some other purpose, is a clear demonstration to me as a westerner observing from far away, and perhaps to the Iraqis themselves that are dying by the dozens every day, that it will be business as usual when it comes to slaughter in Iraq.

He died, Its not our problem. We live on the other side of the world. It shouldn't affect us.

canada6 - January 4, 2007 11:51 PM (GMT)
That's actually the problem. It does affect us. What is occurring in Iraq will effect everything from oil prices to the US's budget spending policy including the millions of lives in between.

Senathia - January 5, 2007 12:05 AM (GMT)
I live in Canada so the gas might affect us but I mean Saddam death isnt affecting us

canada6 - January 5, 2007 12:11 AM (GMT)
I'm sure every stone that's turned over the middle-east will affect us. It's just way too early to say in what way specifically Saddam's execution will.

Bamada - January 14, 2007 04:16 AM (GMT)
Well it certainly will exacerbate the tension between the Shiites and the Sunnis, which has a HUGE affect on us, specifically in the reconstruction of Iraq. This is especially important for the US but is also relevant to Canadians who will have problems if the Middle East isn't stabilized.

I think Private Eye (one of my personal favourite bi-weekly publications) summed it up with this as their front cover:

The full ramifications are yet to be felt. Needless to say, despite propaganda, Saddam Hussein was a unifying figurehead. Now - don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning or condemning what occurred (either by his or the arbitrators' hand), but a great deal of civil and military unrest is more than likely going to occur over the next few months. For the most part, it is going to be a case of watch this space.

Bamada is right though. The US dollar is dropping in value slowly in the FTSE100 index, and rising oil prices could well indeed and salt to an open wound. For the rest of the globe, it could well be a knock on effect with fuel prices rising dramatically (as they are already doing) to the point where supply, demand and availability clash with cost and profit - an economic black hole.

For once the solution is not as clear-cut as the powers that be make out. The crux of the matter is how to not circumvent but alleviate economic strain in a fair and just manner else, as the Chemical Brothers put on their last album, "World, it's time to push the button," as those with the resources scrabble like chicken for what's left of whatever they may be vying for.

Rumors of the world's demise are usually greatly exaggerated. This will probably be another Vietnam, not the end of the United States or probably even their taste for foreign adventure and expansionism.

How very blasé of you! :P

There's something very wrong about the way Saddam was hanged. The US "handing him over" to the Iraqi's is a bunch of BS. The US is still in charge of everything in Iraq, although maybe not for long...

Here is an interesting article from The LA Times.

Edmond calls it the Nixon/Kissinger "rope-a-dope." :P

I've been dabbling in cynicism. I find that it's the perfect attitude to accompany my well-developed scotch habit.

If it's another Vietnam, to be honest, it will be a humiliating defeat - not in a military sense, but a more sublime fashion, and one that the US will try to put polish on.

But I agree with the sentiment ;).

 everyone pretty much knew saddam would be sentenced to death. As for an unfair trial, ae you expecting one in iraq.
