Mav, who has the ability to vote on UN proposals?

mavenu - January 13, 2006 06:13 PM (GMT)
if memory serves me correctly, any player with a nation in TSP. SOme people choose to Telelgram their vote to the delegate, instead of voting on the forum.

Jack_Tarr - January 13, 2006 06:15 PM (GMT)
I thought only UN Nations were allowed to vote on UN issues. Is that incorrect? If so, why bother to be in the UN at all?

Judith Gap - January 14, 2006 11:23 AM (GMT)
Wow. So in TSP only 15 people in the region let the delegate know how to vote?

mavenu - January 15, 2006 02:01 AM (GMT)
offical answer, as TGed to JG, as iAsked for clarification.

In TSP, there is a long tradition for the delegate to post a poll in the forum, where all members of TSP can vote. Both UN and non-UN nations may vote in our regional poll. Additionally, to represent those who are not part of our forums, the Delegate also accepts telegrammed votes from within the region.

This is similar to Canada's UN poll. I have the option to vote, which I do not exercise, that was originally set up under the Bweezy adminstration.

yup. bringing who knows how many UN votes in an attempt to swing a proposal.

Judith Gap - January 15, 2006 02:33 AM (GMT)
My point is that we are a considerably smaller region and sometimes we have more votes on the UN proposals. Is there a problem that people in TSP don't care about UN proposals or is there some other reason why more members aren't posting?

mavenu - January 15, 2006 03:03 AM (GMT)
iWish iCould figure that out too. a variety of answers that iCan think of off the top of my head are:

1) as a feeder, many people join and play the game for a short while, and do not join the forum. then their nation disappears after a few weeks. These people are not interested in regional politics, and NS is just a short interest. They only play with the daily issue, and do not interact on the RMB and other players, let alone the forum.

1a) The opposite of this would be players with a lack of time, or lack of interest, or burnt out (too involved with the gov't) so they don't go onto the forum any more.

2) Other nations can be puppets of other players (invader/defender) that are meant to be hidden, so they will not interact with the regional gov't.

3) and of there is the attitude of what good is the UN if we keep getting repeals so quickly. (there's your lack of caring idea)

4) im sure there are other factors that I haven't though of.

As i mentioned earlier, this link (in canada) will connect you with a discussion on the future of NS, in how to revitalive the pacifics (in general), invading/defending and other ways of changing the game. however, it seems to have stalled after the jolt forum crashes over the last two-three weeks.

With respect to this constituent (group) of players, I think that many are introduced to NationStates through real life friends, online friends or groups such as MSN or Yahoo and don't recieve an adequate explanation from their source about exactly what is needed to get the most enjoyment out of the game. This, in many respects, is unfortunate as a great number of potentially great players are lost within the cut off period for Nation inactivity. It may be that the discussion that mav provided links to may address this issue, but then againit doesn't tackle how to get the players invovled. That, I feel, is mainly up to the player as to whether they want to get involved or not as well as the Region. I appreciate that in a feeder Region that this is very, very difficult due to their nature.

Disillusionment and disenfranchisment is a very powerful un-motivator.

This is quite an interesting discussion, which some of the ideas have been touched upon before. It will be interesting to see how the NationStates Moderating and Administration team react to some of the points raised here.
