Title: A Dummies Guide to Gemetria

Daemon - September 24, 2005 07:39 PM (GMT)
Note: This will be canon. There will be discrepancies between some of the earlier post and this document. This will be updated as Gemetria gets up to more wacky adventures. This will be the summary of the terms, people, and organizations used in my RPs

Political Positions

Consuls – Gemetrian is a dyarchic republic. There are two consuls (derived from the latin “those who walk together”). The consuls are the nominal heads of State.

Senator – Generic term for a Praetor, Quaestor, or Aediles. They are allowed to wear the praetexta sash (a purple sash with gold filigree).

Praetor – The highest level of senator. The vote of the Praetors usually carries motions, as Quaestor and Aediles are considered as a quarter of a Praetorian vote. There are currently 531 Praetors in the Senate. A Praetor must have served for at least two terms as a Quaestor before being eligible to be Praetor. The leader of the Senate was the a Praetor called the Princeps Senatus, and was selected by the Senate to be its voice.

Aedile – Quaestor-level Senators appointed by the Magna Societas. Each company granted Lex Magna Societas gains the ability to appoint an Aediles.

Quaestor – The bulk rank of the Senate. They are usually involved in administrative committees and boring functions of government that the Praetors decide not to do. Tradition has dictated that a Quaestor commit to a Praetor almost as mentor. There are 5142 Quaestors in the Senate. A Quaestor is elected (in Gemetrian the word more closely translates to “exulted”) from a particular riding, which are divided roughly by population.

Military Position

Legate – A Praetor that commands one of the fourty-eight Legions of Gemetria. A legion is a massive military structure. In modern terms, a Legate would be a 6-star general. The power to command a Legion was the lex imperium. There is an additional smaller Legion- the Praetorian legion- that is commanded by the Princeps Senatus. The Legate is picked from citizens of Senatorial status.

Tribune Laticlavius – Grades are Quercus, Acer, and Abies that correspond to five, four, and three star generals (Oak, Maple, Fir). Senatorial Rank. Command cohort groups. It is also the first step on the Cursus honorum (“succession of magistracies” the political ladder).

Tribune Angusticlavii - Grades are Quercus, Acer, and Abies that correspond to two and one star generals, and colonel (Oak, Maple, Fir). Equestrian (Knight) Rank. Command cohorts.

Praefectus Castrorum – Lieutenant Colonel. Equestrian Rank. Commands a Maniple.

Primus Pilus – Major. Equestrian Rank. Commands a Century

Centurions – Grades: Aurem, Argentum, and Stannum (gold, silver, tin), corresponding to Captain, Lieutenant, and 2nd Lieutenant. Plebeian rank.

Princepales – Grades: Juglans, Platanus, and Cryptomeria (Walnut, Sycamore, Cedar), corresponding to Sergeant Major, Staff Sergeant, and Sergeant. Plebeian rank.

Milites – The legionaries. Grades are Gregarius Superus, Gregarius, Probatus, and Tirones. Plebeian rank.

Immunes – Specialists, such as engineers or medics.

Tesserarius – Military Police.

Signifer – Standard bearer for a Cohort

Aquilifer – Standard bearer for a Legion.

Cornicen – Communications officer

Censor or Commissar – a religious/military appointment by the Ordo Anshanti ensuring that military officers adhere to the Tree’s doctrine.

Religion

The main religion is Abystrianism (sometimes called Arborism), the state religion. The Tree, which is the Avatar of the State is worshiped as a living God. The Tree is the aggregated will of government, the network servers (confusingly called the Tree as well. Modern Gemetrians tend to equate the two Trees)

Pontifex Maximus - Head Priest of the State religion.

Pontifices – Senior priest of Abystrianism.

Augurs – Soothsayers of Abystrianism. In antiquity they would divine meaning from the flight of the falcons that they raised, now they divine meaning from the Tree.

Flamens – Priest of Abystrianism. Ensured orthodoxy to the Tree.

Ordo Anshanti – Secret polices. Loyal to the Tree

Magna Societas
Daedlus Corporation - Automotive manufacturing giant. Also makes weapons systems and ships.

Xenlua Corporation – Primarily a ground vehicle weapon manufacturer

Kalmuk – Have the Lex for Kalmuk Pharmaceuticals.

Grimson – A family on the rise. Won increased social status when James Grimson became the first Grimson to command a Legion. Have five Praetors in the Senate and the Lex for Reeds Weapons Systems and the Bank of Dis.

Vespus – A family closely allied with the Grimson. Were once an extremely powerful military and political family, but have been in decline since proving themselves unable to adapt to the new military-industrial complex. One of the few families with Praetors without a Lex
