Title: Standing for MoJ
hudson bay - September 24, 2005 04:32 PM (GMT)
I've been going back and forth on standing for the MoJ position. On the one hand some twisted part of my personality actually enjoys defining and refining the laws and processes of the region. So being the MoJ is a good fit for me and others seem to think I've done a good job in the past.
My reservation is that the items before the cabinet are contentious (because they involve the real possiblity of being abused) and well meaning ministers can have differences that are very hard to resolve. My personality is such that I find that part of the process very unenjoyable (that's a real word isn't it?). I can be open to input until I've made up my mind. Once I've made up my mind I can be very hard headed which doesn't help in situation like this.
So I guess the deciding factor is that if people who have worked with me in the past want me to do it again perhaps I should trust in that.
So I've decided to run even though I haven't thought out my platform or even picked a deputy (something I've always tried to do before).
So some of the things I'd like to work on include:
Finish off the work Parrrrtay and the cabinet started on minister recall and impeachment. (it would be great if this could be wrapped up early but it is so important to get just right that I doubt it will)
Work out a process to fairly handle reviews of cabinet punishments.
I also think a point that Chex brought up a while back should be reviewed and that is: should deputies also be elected or should a different process be used to fill vacancies in the cabinet.
I would also like to build on the work the region has done to further inter-regional efforts in NS. Part of that I think is to find a way to get more resources for the MoFA. I don't have a clear plan along these lines but I think that a more formal recruiting effort focused on inter-regional activities will be a key part of the solution.
Also the idea of using term limits to get fresh people into the govenment is worth talking about. Although a limit of one term is too short IMO.
So there you go - I've done it. If the voters of the region elect me then I'll do my best to work through any difference the cabinet has and move things forward.

Count on my support. You've been a pleasure to work with in the past, even if "eye to eye" isn't always how we see.

Disagreement = healthy government!

Disagreement can lead to compromise or new thinking. This past term was certainly frought with contention, but that was a necessary part of the process.

I have some good news, Parrrrtay has agreed to be my deputy. I'm sure her warm spirit and good advice will be very helpful to me.

I believe that Hudson Bay's decision to run will contribute to the well being of democracy in our region and also spawn a well fought campaign.
May the best candidate win. :fonz:

ONCE elected
Think positive my friends!

I think JG was saying I shouldn't appear presumptuous. Though reading the post in question I'm not sure many people would take it that way. As I understand it, it's not considered polite, or Canadian, to imply you are going to squish your opponent like a bug - not that I meant to imply that any way...

You have my support, HB.
(This may either cause a series of prolonged convulsions, or some minor satisfaction. I apologize for the former.) :)

Thanks very much for giving me your support. Are you still going to be able to stand now that you have given away your support? :P
Daemon - September 27, 2005 03:27 PM (GMT)
This is serious! TV now has no visible means of support... :(
TinyVillages - September 27, 2005 04:30 PM (GMT)
That's the sacrifice I'm willing to make. Besides, isn't that what support groups are for?

But that's generally just people lending support. You seem to be just giving your support away without expecting any support in return!
I'm worried about TV, guys...

*gives TV a leg to stand on*

Altruism is good! (There's a grafitti message I never see!)
