Title: What the... ??

United Nations Intelligence Committee
Received: 10 hours ago This nation has been determined to be in breach of UN rules, which allow each player to have just one nation in the UN at any given time. This is an official warning, to allow you to rectify the situation. If you do not comply, the UN will be forced to take action against you.

This is the TG that awaited me this a.m. I only have one nation here and when I did have puppets - long gone - none were in the U.N.

Can someone spoof my IP address somehow?

Does anyone have a link for me to go to?

:(

Ess - September 17, 2005 02:11 PM (GMT)
I have posted in the moderation forum. I'll see what they say when I get home from work.

*sighs*

Carbanousa - September 17, 2005 02:28 PM (GMT)
Ess, the most most common way for someone to spoof an IP Address would be to run a WHOIS from you Email account the board or the NationStates forum.

If your using a proxy generator (like the one Firefox has built in), in maybe that someone used the same pool as you and ended up with the same IP Address - tis in unlikely though.

If you have a Firewall (which I know you do ;)) check the inbound event log and any intrusions will be noted. If possible, ban the IP addresses that have attempted to rempotely access any ports or add them in a ban range, i.e. 15.10.1.0 - 155.155.155.10. You'll need to be careful not to ban your own IP Address or your modem/router/reuter as you'll also lockdown you own connection.

I'd also suggest setting your Firewall security level to 'High' (McAfee) or comparable paranoid-type setting.

If you IP Address is dynamic, it's much harder to accomplish as it's different each time you connect. Static IP's are much easier to replicate, although most /routersreuters will have a firewall built in.

It may help, but if you are using a modem with a router/reuter, make sure that it is DHCP enabled with only the IP Addresses of your computer and any others that are in your house (such as husbands, laptop etc) as it will stop your router/reuter being used to piggy-back or bounce off.

Don't panic. It was probably some idiot looking for cheap kicks.

Carbanousa - September 17, 2005 02:57 PM (GMT)
Afterthought:

If you've logged onto your Nation using a public computer, or someone elses, this may have caused the problem - the mods bother if it's a public terminal as all they see is a singlular IP Address with multi-UN stati.

hudson bay - September 17, 2005 03:07 PM (GMT)
Does anyone know if this "United Nations Intelligence Committee" is how the mods communicate to players? Sounds like a a fake TG to me. If it's from a mod wouldn't it say so?

Carbanousa - September 17, 2005 03:11 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure. Usually, the Nation is booted from the UN immediately (and possibly deleted) with a TG as a follow up.

Now THAT sounds like the mods! Delete you then send you a TG that you can't read. That I would believe to be a mod like action

Carbanousa - September 17, 2005 03:29 PM (GMT)
I've just checked Ess's Nation, and it is still UN, so it may well be a prank.

Ess - September 17, 2005 11:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the info., Carb! I've gotten a reply from Katganistan and posted a reply back, but this is the only computer I use and hubby doesn't use it. I'll check my ZA log and do as you've said. Thanks again and I guess we'll see what's up eventually, I hope! (I have a static IP)

Good luck Ess. I hate the whole guilty until proven innocent approach of the NS mods.

It's one thing to see the same IP used to access more than one UN nation once in a blue moon. It's a whole other thing to see the same IP used to access multiple UN nations repeatedly over time. It's much more likely to be cheating if they see the same IP used to create multiple UN nations.

IF you got this message because one other person accessed their, long established, UN nation from you PC once; that seems to me to be a situation to monitor. Doesn't seem to take too much thought to rate this as most likely not cheating and the mods could monitor your IP address just in case rather than threat you.

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 02:01 AM (GMT)
I doubt that it will make much difference but I posted my feelings on the NS forum just in case.

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 02:27 AM (GMT)
Boy did I get a NS Mod over reaction

Ess - September 18, 2005 02:49 AM (GMT)
Wow! I saw your posts, hb! *big hugs* :D

Don't go getting them p.o.'d and getting yourself in trouble! :P

I do appreciate what you did, though! ^_^

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 02:55 AM (GMT)
I'll stick up for you anytime. This whole guilty until proven innocent approach always gets under my skin (more so in RL).

If the mods boot me for sticking up for friends and liberty then I'll treat that as a badge of honor!

Since the player is (well, at least appears to be) innocent, they don't need to worry about something happening again (and they'll be more careful with other people accessing nations in the future) so their nation is in no danger.

Plus a further swipe at HB.

Hopefully this means Ess is in the clear. It's very hard to tell with the NS mods.

Ess - September 18, 2005 03:31 AM (GMT)
Whew! Just posted a thanks and then noticed hb had posted again! Stop it! :(
You will get into trouble and I don't want you to do that over them warning me! :ph43r:
At least I got a warning first! :)

It looks to be all straightened out for me, so I am going to just be relieved and get back to "normal"! :P

Please do the same, hb. K?! :D

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 03:34 AM (GMT)
Please don't worry about me. But you are right, trying to correct the mods is "tilting at windmills" ;)

kana da - September 18, 2005 03:36 AM (GMT)
I just noticed BCC was ejected for UN rule violations.

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 03:41 AM (GMT)
Oh - that's not right :(

"Worried about something happening again.."

'What' happening again..? '...other people accessing Nations..'

That's more of a denial than an admission.
Methinks the Mods made what the technical circles refer to as a boo-boo.

Well I am still able to log in to my nation :) I took on the Mods armed with none of the facts, a strong opinion and just my good looks. Not sure how I managed to not get toasted but here I am :D

Hopefully BCC will be able to give us the highlights of what happend to her...

Oh and here's a nice big ignore cannon for the jerk Dread Lady Nathicana:

I just read the Mod thread...
Wow talk about people with almighty attitudes!

~Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely!

Glad to hear you are ok Ess, awaiting BCC's comments.

kana da - September 18, 2005 08:01 PM (GMT)
I'll be quite honest, this whole thing has left me wanting to cut ties to NS altogether. The only reason I'm not walking out is this forum here. But if this continues, I may have to stick around as a visitor only.

I realize that my threat will have the same effect on an NS moderator as a four-year-old threatening to hold their breath. I used to be a good girl and believe that "the mods can do no wrong." Not anymore.

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
I'm with you KD! The great people of this region are the main reason I log into NS any more...

Sounds like they were vitamin drama deprived.

hudson bay - September 18, 2005 10:07 PM (GMT)

However, my diagnosis is an overdose of Vitamin Drama

Almonaster - September 18, 2005 10:10 PM (GMT)
Perhaps they've been taking too much out of the drama mine?

People, there are circumstances of which you are not aware. It's not my place to bring them to your attention, but hopefully the person who should, will.
Please do not get all mad about what happened as you do not know all the facts.
Thanks!
Ess :)

Beaver-Country-Canada - September 19, 2005 04:14 AM (GMT)
To clear things up: I was stupid.

I had Beaver-Country-Canada in the UN at the time I went to Ess's place, yes. But a few weeks ago, I went and applied for another nation of mine with the UN -- not thinking I'd get in. I did, and foolishly I didn't get out again. I figured the mods wouldn't be stupid enough to not look at the IPs, but apparently they didn't even bother, they just accepted it -- for the record, it was under another email.

I deserved what I got, and I knew it would come in the future -- I was surprised it happened so late; I was expecting it days after I signed up with my puppet, not weeks!

It has been a very bad day for me, and this isn't helping.
