Title: Buy a magazine?

420_Celebrants - September 7, 2005 08:15 PM (GMT)
Alright ... usually I don't toot my own horn, but this time it is a bit different.

Four years ago I graduated college with a journalism diploma. Finally, I have a job in the field ... and I would like to share my first ever published article with you all.

I do realize not everyone here is from Canada, but if you are and you have some spare money kicking around, please go to your local store that carries magazines and pick up a copy of UMM (Urban Male Magazine) and take a look at the new music reviews section.

No - although it kinda sounds like it, this is not a gay magazine. It is Canada's equivilent to Maxim ... kinda. Although really - it kinda bites. But whatever ... they are paying me to write about stuff I love.

If you happen to live outside of Canada but still want to read my first article, feel free to PM me and I'll send you a text file. This also works if you are Canadian and broke.

Of course, I would also be very appriciative if you were to email the editor and tell them how much you enjoyed the section, as they have never had one before and this was just a test of the waters ... I'd love to keep writing for them, as I already have my next two articles written ... waiting for reviews to be added in and the time to come for my deadline. LOL

Getting paid to write about stuff you like is very cool. Enjoy it while you can. So what kind of music are you into?

Being a suburban female, I'd feel a little odd doing it....but to hell with what magazine stand owners think, if I see it, I'll get it. :D

Carbanousa - September 8, 2005 02:01 AM (GMT)
Is it online?

j delight - September 8, 2005 02:03 AM (GMT)
420, now THAT's something to celebrate!

Yeeehaw.

420_Celebrants - September 8, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
Hudson Bay - exactly - that is why I want to keep the job ... as it isn't really a job for me - just something fun to do. As for music, I'm really all over the board. I prefer rock, but my CD collection (over 500 CDs) ranges from jungle to death metal (and sadly, I'll be honest, there is a Kenny G cd in said collection).

Chex - You can have fun laughing at each and every female who has a picture in the magazine. There is like a five page section of pictures of chicks vying for some contest of some sort or something ... I'm pretty sure they are all strippers or something. All I know is my female friend had a lot of fun laughing through that section last night.

Carbanousa - unfortunately it isn't ... actually - it *is*, but you have to subscribe to the magazine in order to get access to the online version.

JD - Yes ... 'tis. And wow did I ever live up to my name last night. LOL

What she said!

Good job, 420!

So come on, now we've been properly introduced are you going to explain what 4:20 is all about?

Emus in denial - September 9, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
you might find your answer if you dig around for the signicance of the 20th day of the fourth month.

420_Celebrants - September 9, 2005 10:17 PM (GMT)
I explained this in chat this afternoon, but for those that missed it who might still be scratching your heads, I smoke the real life version of insane root.

4:20 is slang for pot smoking.

I checked it on Snopes after a steer from our eponymous local. The origin seems obscure, and it is not common parlance on my side of the pond.

Let's see... 1792 France declares war on Austria. Could that be it? Nah...
Perhaps this, then: 1902 - Pierre and Marie Curie refine radium chloride.
1979 - President Jimmy Carter is attacked by a Swamp Rabbit while on vacation in Plains, Georgia. :eyebrow:
Ah, maybe *this* - 1940 - George Takei, American actor
I think I'll go with this: Drug Culture
:D

All of the above from this page.

*edit* I see I am a little late... :P

I notice April 20th is the start of Taurus - does that make this whole thing a load of bull?

How could you leave Carmen Electra off your list?

Wow ... you know ... I never noticed that before. I *am* a Taurus ... I wonder if my drug habit has to do with those pesky stars rummaging around up there making animal shapes?

Maybe, after reading that, it is my drug habit that makes me THINK those stars are both pesky AND making animal shapes.

j delight - September 11, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
I blame Christopher Reeves.

420_Celebrants - September 11, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
Would it be bad of me to just blame his bedsore instead?

j delight - September 11, 2005 08:27 PM (GMT)
Well, that would be kind of demented, so.... go ahead.

Checkers McDog - September 14, 2005 09:08 PM (GMT)
Guess what I bought today? :D

I didn't read it yet....but I did flip to the page that says "UMM Music Review By Rob Brown". :clapping:

420_Celebrants - September 14, 2005 10:51 PM (GMT)
I dunno what it is you bought ... but for the love of God I hope it wasn't a box of tampons that said that on it.

Emus in denial - September 15, 2005 12:09 AM (GMT)
you don't think "urban male magazine" brand feminine hygiene products would do well?

NewTexas - September 15, 2005 01:40 PM (GMT)
Congratulations 420 Celebrants! :clapping:

Getting published in a major magazine (even if it is not in Texas) has got to give you a rewarding sense of accomplishment!

Have one on us!
