Title: HELP
Description: can't post

Parrrrtay - August 24, 2005 09:59 PM (GMT)
Laughterandsunshine can't see the 'add reply' buttons or the Canadian banner. She has tried refresh, logged on and off and on again, emptied cache.

Anyone have any idea why she can't see the 'add reply' button?

Jack_Tarr - August 24, 2005 10:31 PM (GMT)
That happened to me once. I ended up rebooting and all was fine after that.

Parrrrtay - August 24, 2005 11:55 PM (GMT)
OK JT she rebooted and still cannot post and now she is
And I don't know how to help her

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure whether you mean the reply button on the topic, or the add reply button in the posting panel. If its the former, then this is a real ugly cludge but it should work.
  1. Right-click on the "Quote" button on any post in the topic.
  2. Select "copy link location".
  3. Paste this into notepad (or similar). It should look something like this...
    http://invisionfree.com/forums/NationState...=3664&p=2148627
  4. Remove the &p=2148627 (or whatever) from the end.
  5. Change the &CODE=06 to &CODE=02
  6. Copy this new url, and paste it into the address bar on your browser.

If its the submit reply button within the post panel, that's harder, since that's scripted so you can't do it by url. The only suggestion I have for that is to use the preview button, as part of its effect is to refresh the submit button.

Parrrrtay - August 25, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
for every post she wants to make?

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 12:10 AM (GMT)
No. You have to do the full palavar once for each topic you want to post in. Keep the urls you've created in notepad (labelled of course B) ), and you can re-use them at step 6. The point of steps 1-5 was to pick up the parameters you need.

I did say it was an ugly cludge!

Parrrrtay - August 25, 2005 12:13 AM (GMT)
Ok now how do we get the easy version?
The part I don't get is why only Canada?
She can post in any other invision board.

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 12:17 AM (GMT)
Probably because we have custom buttons, and the host for those may be slow. I'm getting some pretty ragged responses myself.

I'm afraid that's the best I can do at 10 mins notice. If it works, its better than nothing, right?

Parrrrtay - August 25, 2005 12:27 AM (GMT)
Well not really because she doesn't see the quote buttons either

hudson bay - August 25, 2005 12:29 AM (GMT)
The host for the buttons is invisionfree, so the speed is usually not too bad (also they are small files). When is comes to response issues there are a number of variables. Before getting too crazy with building notepad lists of links; I'd say give it a day and see how everything responds tomorrow. After all, everything was fine for her before. Nothing has changed on the site so most likely it is a traffic (latency) issue of some kind...

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 12:32 AM (GMT)
It helps if you give with all the information, 'K?

What buttons (if any) can she see?

(Meanwhile, for reference, the code to post here is
http://invisionfree.com/forums/NationState...02&f=23&t=3666)

What you need to get are the forum and topic numbers at the end. Some nice person could collect them for her if necessary, eh Shay?

(PS - I've checked it and it works.)

hudson bay - August 25, 2005 12:33 AM (GMT)
In this case clearing the cache should actually make the problem worst.

hudson bay - August 25, 2005 12:41 AM (GMT)
It also would not hurt to review her broswer settings. Two days ago my finger slipped when trying to click something and next thing I knew all the backgrounds were white. Somehow I had hit the magic combination to not use a site's CSS. Took me a while to find out what I did and were to change it back.

Ess - August 25, 2005 12:45 AM (GMT)
I was mssing the red stripes on the main board and the stripes at the bottom were dark blue - that was yesterday and today all is fine!

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 12:47 AM (GMT)
Here's a few to start with

A/S/L: f=8&t=628

Radio show: f=8&t=3665

RL Pics: f=8&t=348

Royal Hunt: f=3&t=3638

You know..inernet when: f=8&t=3576

Canada Mall: f=201&t=3277

T&P's: f=201&t=3176

hudson bay - August 25, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
That has happend to me sometimes also Ess. That is definitly a speed issue. We should tell invisionfree that we demand faster servers! Oh wait it's a free service

I recall they were kept that way to try and avoid speed issue, but we don't know what's going on the the InvisionFree end.

I'd tend to agree with HB here. If needed a more comprehensive and systematic analysis can be taken.

That happens to me too, but I'm usually okay after either refreshing the browser, refreshing the brwoswer cache, or restarting Firefox. Some browsers handle different things a little better.

There was some talk some time ago about employing another server. I haven't seen anything to confirm or deny this, and the difference would only be marginal at best. It may well be that InvisionFree are running maintenance or even upgrading currently.

This got me thinking...
Has the browser been changed or updated recently? Has something been added or removed from the computer (program or otherwise), or have any settings been changed.

It could be a number of things but I think the most likely options have been tackled.

bweezy - August 25, 2005 02:20 PM (GMT)
This used to happen to me all the time about a year ago (or was it two years ago?). Either way, all I had to do was "guess" where the button should go and click. Then I'd be able to reply. I called it the "Stevie Wonder" approach. If you blindly click enough, you'll eventually hit the right button.

Hey..the only thing that shows up is the quote button today!!

Almonaster - August 25, 2005 11:44 PM (GMT)
Well at least that lets you post. You can always blank out the quoted bit.

laughterandsunshine - August 25, 2005 11:51 PM (GMT)
OMG! the quote button is there sometimes but, this time i saw an ADD Reply button...maybe my computer is haunted?
thanks everyone for all your help.
i am affraid to hit send..wondering if the Add Reply button will be there again???
*crossing fingers*

hudson bay - August 26, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
L&S what browser are you using? If I know anything ab out your browser I might be able to think of some settings to check on the client side of things.

laughterandsunshine - August 28, 2005 06:10 PM (GMT)
I use Internet Explorer. Today i downloaded Netscape with Firefox rendering engine and I still can not see the add reply button...sometimes I see the quote button. I hit the quote button just now in order to type this here.
This is making me crazy!
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:wall:

laughterandsunshine - August 28, 2005 06:28 PM (GMT)
Is it because I am a visitor and not a member?

hudson bay - August 28, 2005 07:02 PM (GMT)
Nope - it's not a permission issue. It's an odd problem for sure. The fact that you can see the quote button means that it's not likely to be a browser setting.

I would like to see you force a load of images from outside cache. The way you do that is to hold down the shift key while you click on refresh. (although someone on this forum told me when they tried that foxfire also cleared the cache - which doesn't make any sense). If you are viewing a cached version without all images that should correct the problem. Although the fact that you have used two different browsers makes this not very likely.

Other than that the only thing that comes to mind is disk space for the cached images. Is it possible your disk is close to being filled? (that can make windows do odd things).

You can't do what you are describing on purpose, so it's hard to determine what might be wrong. I can tell you it's working for me. I also have not heard of any changes to the site. That leaves something on the client end (your system). Since you have changed browers and got the same result that confirms it's not a browser setting. Not much left to try. Sorry I can't be more helpful. :(

Judith Gap - August 28, 2005 10:58 PM (GMT)
Have we considered asking Invision about the issue?

Almonaster - August 28, 2005 11:07 PM (GMT)
Its more likely to be a problem with LandS's ISP, I think. If several people were having problems then that might be down to Invision.

420_Celebrants - August 28, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
I would say it most definitely isn't an Invision problem.

Sounds to me like it is a lil bit modem speed and a lil bit IE.

Although assuming is bad, I'll go forth and do it anyways. You're either on dial up or basic DSL, aren't you?

If you are bobbing your head up and down right now, this is good. 'Cause I might be able to rectify the issue.

First off, don't use IE to view the board. While it might take forever, download Firefox from Mozilla.

Go to the tools tab and then to the options tab. When there, go to the Web Features, and make sure the "Load Images" box is clicked.

Then go to exceptions, copy and paste the address of this forum (the main forum, not an address that includes a forum and thread address) and hit "allow"

This should solve the problem. SHOULD. No personal guarantees or money back offers.

It could very well just be a slow connection speed and a slow browser. The main image is quite large and takes awhile to load and then all the other buttons and such, a computer using dial up with an older browser just won't be able to handle the load.

I can't say I've had such problems on my home machine, which uses IE 5-point-something and uses a dialup connection. But maybe I'm special...

I'm on DSL and when it was originally changed, I had some major issues loading the image.

Also remember that dial up speed differs from computer to computer.

The upload and download settings could be altered to make more room for larger objects - if the modem / network settings allow it.

hudson bay - August 29, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
Parrrrty -

Is she on a dial up line or not?

Did she ever attempt to force the browser to refresh from outside cache (shift-refresh)?

If the asnwer is yes to both questions and she still can't see all the buttons then I suggest that she turn off graphics but set the browser to show the position outline.

Also we could try loading the old forum logo to see if the larger image is what is pushing her connection time outs over the edge.

Almonaster - August 29, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
One option might be to install the proxomitron (from here, for example). Then take a local copy of the banner and use the proxomitron to map http://invisionfree.com/forums/NationState...post&id=2134453 to your local copy. That should speed up the download by about 10 seconds, and may allow the icons to get through.

Another possibility is that most browsers have a server time-out limit somewhere. If you can find it, try increasing that.

Parrrrtay - August 30, 2005 12:04 AM (GMT)
Comcast cable - high speed internet.
She could care less about the canada banner.
How does she get the 'ADD REPLY' buttons???

Ummm AL, she is a blonde!

yes i tried the Shift-Refresh thing tell hudson. (LandS)

Almonaster - August 30, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
Oh dear. has she got a friend who could help? The prox instructions are fairly clear but rather extensive - there's little point me posting them here.

The Canada banner may be slowing down the transmission to the point where the buttons get lost. The prox would cut out that time. So she probably should care.

HB's suggestion is probably the best for now - just turn off images. She should then be able to click on the placeholders.

Parrrrtay - August 30, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
It is just this site.

She can sign on any invision board and see the 'add reply' buttons on them all, except Canada.
I shot her with my name and password to many invision sites and she can see the buttons. But it will NOT work here in canada.

Does that give you any idea what it could be?

Al I am her only help and right now I am about 20 miles away from her.

FROM LandS:
when i first clicked on my Favorites to come to canada I can see the canada banner..then when I clicked on let's say..the village it left..I haven't seen it since.
