Title: Do you feel safe in Canada?
Description: Is our government prepared?
Magnate of The Albertan Empire - July 22, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
In light of all the attacks in London, Im getting a tad worried that Canada could be next on the list. Honestly, I don't think Canada is as prepared as other western countries. London officials have prepared for years in case of terrorist attacks. Its evident in the speed and efficiency that emergency workers attended the first bombings. Heck, I remember a few months ago when Radio Canada walked into that Hydro plant in Quebec. Imagine what a mess that could have been if it wasn’t a reporter.

We are not safe, and there is nothing we can do about it. If somebody is willing to die to accomplish a goal, you can't stop them. You just have to realize the odds of you being one of the 32 million people in Canada, and go through life like normal.

Of course, I don't live in Canada, but the fact is that most terrorists like high-profile cities--9/11/01 was NYC and DC, and the latest wave is in London. I feel relatively safe just by living on the outer edge of a rather nondescript city.
If I lived in a major city I might be more nervous.

Theres another bonus of living in Canada. We have like, 3 major cities. (Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, maybe Edmonton 'cause of the oil.) :P
EDIT: Add Montreal to that list. Calgary can go jump into a pit of snakes. :P

Uhm, maybe Montreal?
They have been speculating that those cities with developed mass transportation will be the main targets. Toronto has trains and subways, Montreal has a subway that was already a target in a plot that never got off the ground, and Vancouver has the sky train. Ottawa and Calgary have lesser developed transit links that are on rails that could be targetted (and maybe Edmonton too, I don't recall).

Why would they attack us? Cripple our economy? What would they attack? CN Tower? I have so much family in Toronto, and I would think that this would be the place to attack if I were a terrorist, (Bank HQs). If not that probably, Edmonton, Ottawa, Calagary. Just wondering what they would blow up in Vanacouver, or even Montreal? Please don't say it is the ethnic diversity in these cities that has put them on the hit list.

No, because we went to Afgan and killed terrorists. thats why were on the list.

Little known fact: Every Al Qaeda sleeper agent sent to Canada has reported back with a Molson trucker hat and a Nova Scotian accent.
The ones sent to Vancouver are also very disappointed in the Dorito supply in the Middle East.

I feel "fairly safe" in Canada.
Having said that - I voted for the last option - "I have little confidence that Canada is ready for an attack" because I believe if someone wants to blow something up here, they probably could! I don't see how we can safeguard everything.

But do you think that our emergency response teams are prepared to handle an attack? My personal opinon is that if the same thing happened in TO or Vancouver it would be much worse. But I could be wrong.

I think that we're fairly safe. Of course, I live in a smaller city, so it doesn't seem likely terrorists would hit Regina.
Just in case, who wants to dig up the old bomb shelter? :P

I guess it depends on how bad the blast/s was...

I personally don't think we have much to worry about. As far as targets go we must be pretty low-key, mainly because of our stance regarding Iraq and the reputation we've built up. Of course that doesn't make us immune in anyway but why would the terrorists attack us here when their preferred or primary target, the States, is an hour away across an unguarded border?
Magnate of The Albertan Empire - July 24, 2005 08:51 AM (GMT)
I think that Canada is going ot be hit sooner than later. We supported the war in Afghanistan. I jus tdont think our emergency response teams are prrepardd for such things.
