Title: Swearing
Oilers Fans - July 18, 2005 08:34 PM (GMT)
What is the official government and board policy on swearing or abusive language? After the anger thread, I'd like to know where we stand, so I can adjust my posts accordingly

OF, I believe this will be mentioned in the forthcoming regional report.

I totally [BLEEP] agree with you. But I don't want my freedom of speech to be infringed upon.

Many people refrain from swearing and they still are able to express themselves quite clearly. IMHO you don't need to offend others to express yourself.
It is sad that people feel decent morals and common curtisy towards others to be an infringement on their freedom of speech.
Judith Gap - July 20, 2005 12:48 PM (GMT)
I agree with Parrrrtay. It's sad to claim the right to freedom of expression without accepting the responsibilities that come with those rights.

I also agree with Parrrrtay. I can't think of any reason anyone would NEED to curse/verbally abuse someone else on this board.

That's a different issue. One is quite clearly not allowed to swear AT another person, as that is flaming. This is already covered. We are talking about just general swearing, like the kind that I do on a hot day when I get a really cool delicious beer.

I don't think that swearing in and of it's self is the issue. Dropping the occasional F*bomb is something most everyone on the forum has done themselves one time or another.
Of course excessive swearing gets old fast (unless you are a 10 year old male, then too much is never enough :) . I think the real issues is, what is a given member trying to accomplish? Are they trolling or flame baiting? Those are things I don't think the rest of the forum has to put up with. If a member ignores repeated requests by other members to "tone it down" then they are rude and disrepectful and that is something else the other members of the forum don't have to put up with.
Of course figuring out were to draw the line is the hard part ;)

I completely agree with you HB, I think that the trick is determining where that line is, and I don't think that that is a trivial task. Cabinet is working on that issue right now.

Ahhhh. I was confused as to the issue at hand, then. Thanks. :)

I don't think that is something you can hope to resolve completely. There will always be an element of judgement involved.
That does not mean that the attempt is futile. If you can come up with a formulation which makes it reasonably clear where the line is, then this helps everyone to keep within it. As was noted above, there is also a question of the response when someone is offended. If the reaction is an apology and/or an obvious attempt to improve I think we should normally forgive and forget. If the reaction is to continue, then it becomes a matter for dispute resolution or official action.

Agreed on both counts.
