Title: problem...
Ess - July 4, 2005 11:07 PM (GMT)
As of last week the pips on the main board do not show as being "read".
Is anyone else having this problem?
I have to watch the date and times and then go to the bottom of the main board and click on "Mark all posts as read" after I'm caught up.
It's very annoying and not very user friendly! :(
Any ideas as to what the problem could be and how I could fix it?
Thanks!

Not sure Ess it's been working for me. Two thoughts on things to try:
First try forcing our browser to pull form the site not cache. On most browsers holding down the shift key while clicking refresh should do the trick.
Another thing to try is clicking the "Mark all posts as read" at the bottom of the main forum screen.
Let us know it this helps at all.....

Thanks, hb! I'll try the first and I've been doing the second, but it's not "user friendly".

Some browsers have a setting related to how often to pull from a site. I remember once having a person at work accidentally change this setting and they could get to certain info and they couldn't figure out why...
If you tell us which browser you are using, perhaps someone can tell you where the setting is located. (I use Opera) so you can check it...

Yup, I had the same problem.
What is wrong?

We need an admin to come to chat right now! Ess has a problem!

Thanks, kd! Disregard the above from kd.
I did what hb said - held shift and clicked refresh and I was a guest all of a sudden and couldn't find my password and firefox wouldn't show it to me, although it showed me the rest. The email I used is probably gone now, etc.
I finally found my password and here I am.
:P
Now - let's see if I still have the same prob with the main board pips!
Oh, Daemon - disregard the pm from kd, ty.
Thanks for all your help, kd!! ^_^
Daemon - July 5, 2005 12:02 AM (GMT)
Oh don't worry. I disregard all PMs.
:o

*whacks Daemon with a large trout*
:P
Any ideas to actually *help* Daemon??? :D

Sorry Ess - I'm suprised that would have removed your cookies (which is where your password is stored). In IE and Opera holding down shift simply tells the browers to not use cache but get all it's info from the site. Shouldn't have anything to do with cookies.
kana da - July 5, 2005 12:05 AM (GMT)
Send pop-ups announcing his PM's on a once-every-5-minute basis until he answers them. :P
Daemon - July 5, 2005 12:06 AM (GMT)
Yeah, sounds like you pouched your cookies when you cleared your cache.
hudson bay - July 5, 2005 12:08 AM (GMT)
Holding down shift and clicking refresh shouldn't clear cache it should just not use cache for that refresh... Seemed like the safest suggestion...

The pips have always functioned in unpredicatble ways for me. On the Mac in Safari, on the PC in Explorer. Sometimes the pips work, sometimes they stay locked on, sometimes the pips all disapear after I've read the first post. It's a game for me now.
Daemon - July 5, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
*shrug* bug maybe? Something corrupted the cookie (walnut shortbread)?
Clearing the cache is pretty safe too, I do it pretty much every evening.

Yeah, I'm the same. I generally ignore them.

Ess I don't know where the setting is in foxfire but in IE (in case it's similiar):
Click Tools from the menu bar
Select "Internet Options"
in the "temporary internet files" section click "settings"
Make sure that "newer versions of stored pages" is set to "automatically".
hopefully foxfire has a similar setting...
Ess - July 5, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
No worries, hb! :)
 @ kd! :P
Daemon - July 5, 2005 12:21 AM (GMT)
I'm not aware of it if it does exist. Firefox is sort of stripped down. The only cache settings that you can play with it the cache size, and that's not the issue of contension.

There are actually a lot of settings behind firefox, but they're not readily accessible and you don't normally need to mess with them.
I just checked out the site with Opera, Firefox and I.E. Explorer showed the pips problem, neither of the others did. It seems unlikely to be cache related, since IE was the last one I tried.
I also hit another minor problem - the lightning flash links in embassy row (not checked elsewhere) appear to redirect you up one level, rather than down into the relevant subforum.

*sighs*
Can't find temp. internet files...
:(
*edit*
Just read the above posts. Apparently FF doesn't have such an area?
I had Opera, but got rid of it... :P

I might have found a solution for Firefox, but it's risky. Ess, do you like risk... do you like living on the wildside?
Almonaster - July 5, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
Just as an experiment, try opening a new tab and putting in
http://209.85.62.23/66/151/upload/p1791998.gifYou should get a small icon with a white chevron on a gold field.

:ph43r:
What is it, Daemon?
I saw the white chevron on gold, Al!

Type into your URL bar:
Then in the filter field, copy and paste:
| QUOTE |
| browser. cache. check_doc_frequency |
Then right click and select "Modify". Change the number from 3 to 1
Tell me how that works.
EDIT: Dyslexia corrected.
Ess - July 5, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
Almonaster - July 5, 2005 12:55 AM (GMT)
That checks- mine is set to 3 also.
Daemon - July 5, 2005 12:56 AM (GMT)
Ha! 3 to 1, I mean!
Ess, any window.
Almonaster - July 5, 2005 12:57 AM (GMT)
A new tab is probably easiest, we may need to check a few of these settings.
Ess - July 5, 2005 12:58 AM (GMT)
"Modify" is greyed out.
Do I click show all?
Right-click what?
:P
Ess - July 5, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
All I could click would be New - string, integer, boolean...
Daemon - July 5, 2005 01:00 AM (GMT)
Er? You are right clicking the line that says "browser. cache. check_doc_frequency"?
Daemon - July 5, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
Yo, just type "cache" into the filter, and find the entry just by looking through.
Ess - July 5, 2005 01:01 AM (GMT)
yup...
*edit*
Ok, I'll try that...
Ess - July 5, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
Ok, was 3 is now 1.
Close window?
Daemon - July 5, 2005 01:05 AM (GMT)
I would imagine that you would have to close all windows and restart the 'Fox, but that's just me.
Almonaster - July 5, 2005 01:05 AM (GMT)
Nah, just refresh the tab/window with the forum in it.
Almonaster - July 5, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
If no difference, then try Daemon's way.
Ess - July 5, 2005 01:07 AM (GMT)
Refresh didn't do it - I still see the lightning bolt.
I'm going to close FF and come back...
