Congratulations to the newly elected Canadian Cabinet! I'm sure you'll all do a great job.

We had a strong voter turnout, and excellent participation in these elections. We've now got two new faces in Cabinet :)

I'd also just like to thank everyone involved in the elections, whether it was by running, asking questions, or simply voting.

Freezing Cold Water - July 4, 2005 05:05 AM (GMT)
Congrats, JG!!! Thanks for the hard race. You have earned it. Well done.

My congrats also goes to the Candidates who ran in this election but didn't win, I hope you will run again in the future but last but not least my supporters who have voted for me and the Canadian people for their excellent participation.

You all deserve big high fives!!!

Judith Gap - July 4, 2005 01:14 PM (GMT)
Thank you all. I think all the candidates running this time contributed valuable thoughts to their ministeries. I was honoured in running with you. Good race FCW.

Good job P, and the other acclaimed ministers.

I'm more than a little sad that BCC and HB aren't sitting on cabinet. I know first-hand how much they've brought to previous cabinets and the region.

hudson bay - July 4, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)

Congratulations to the new cabinet, and thanks to all those who stood for office. The debate that arises from contested elections is vital for democracy.

If this is a true democracy, how come the Prime Mnister. Checkers McDog, never faces an election?

I face an election everyday. You can endorse or unendorse me at anytime. If the nations of this region didn't want me as delegate, I wouldn't be it.....It's quite democratic.

Precisely.

You are relentless. However, you have never once say why you feel it is undemocratic. Nor have you ever offered any insight as to how another system would be MORE democratic.

Continuing to say you don't like it does not further the discussion. We all know how you feel. Put some thought into it and explain what changes you would make and how it would be better (more democratic). Anything else is just whining...

Sparta Territories - July 9, 2005 01:04 PM (GMT)
What about the nations that are on the off-site forum that are NOT UN members in Nation States? They can not endorse you, Checkers. So therefore you do not face an electinon everyday. Those nations therefore recieve very little representation.

Everyone has the freedom to have a UN nation in Canada. So people choose not to because they prefer to be primarily citizens of another region, or because they have had that privilege revoked by a mod. So people without any nation can be represented fully if they want, and it's only their own choices that will lead to them being unable to participate in our system.

canada6 - July 9, 2005 01:18 PM (GMT)
In article II-1-f of the Constitution of the Region of Canada you'll find the following.

QUOTE (Constitution)
Prime Minister
The Prime Minister shall be the sitting UN Delegate of the region, and shall be elected through the UN Delegate election mechanisms already in place at the www.nationstates.net website. The Prime Minister’s responsibilities shall be restricted to those responsibilities given to it at Nation States. The Prime Minister shall be given Administrator privileges on the Regional off-site Board.

This was settled and agreed upon in a democratic fashion. If you dissagree with this article than propose an ammendment to the constitution and it will voted upon as stated in section III of the Constitution.

QUOTE (Constitution)
1. This Constitution shall only be amended upon a resolution sponsored by a member of Cabinet which achieves:
(a) Majority support in a Cabinet Vote; and
(b.) Majority support in a special Referendum of all Regional Members, in accordance with the rules of Article I above.

Allthough it is not stated directly in the Constitution I feel that it is implied in several diferent articles that this region's beliefs are to a certain extent embedded with the UN and somewhat encourages the nations of this region to be UN Members.

hudson bay - July 9, 2005 01:19 PM (GMT)
It is easy to knock things down ST. Let's see you propose something better. Any system in which the delegate is choosen in the forum (which won't work anyway due to game mechanics) will have much less representation than the current system. Recent elections where determined by 20 or so votes. Chex currently has over 100 endorsements.

So let's hear in detail your superior method...

Sparta Territories - July 9, 2005 01:20 PM (GMT)
Not everyone wants to be an UN member, i can understand that. But still, Checkers DOES NOT face an election everyday, like she claims. She should face an election once in a while.

Chex is not the only one making that claim. So far everyone who has expressed an opinion has made that claim with the exception of you.

Got a better way to do things, dude?

Cough it up...

Sparta Territories - July 9, 2005 01:28 PM (GMT)
My idea would be to have Prime Minister Elections every 6 months. This would keep the a changing view of Canada, not just one continous view ALL THE TIME. AS for Cabinet, the members should be chosen by the PM, not by the general board.

Now *that* doesn't seem democratic to me...

canada6 - July 9, 2005 01:31 PM (GMT)
In spite of Sparta's lack of clarity as to what he is actually proposing, I think it would be interesting to hold elections for PM. I have no major problem with the current system or the current PM. (Chex )
However, under a new system the endorsements would count only for UN delegate, which would relegate the position of delegate to a mere ambassador or representative to the UN. The Prime Minister would be elected like any other minister. I sincerely doubt that Checkers McDog would lose an election if she would wish to run for PM.

This change may appear subtle but it would require a major reworking of the constitution.

There are a few positive aspects to this possible change, but there are also a few negatives one as well.

hudson bay - July 9, 2005 01:32 PM (GMT)
1) You continue to ignore the relationship of the forum to the region. Your proposal would destroy the relationship by disconnecting the PM position from the delegate.

2) Having the PM choose the cabinet would be extremely less democratic than the current system.

So if you are so hung up on making the PM/delegate election some how more democratic (in your mind) why in the world would you not elect the cabinet??

Sparta Territories - July 9, 2005 01:39 PM (GMT)
Hudson Bay. The purpose for the Cabinet is for the Prime Minister to chose who he or she FEELS is best for the job. The public should have no vote in who gets what position. It is up to the PM ALONE to decide the Cabinet. As for the Region Delegate, he or she will become the Canadian Ammbassador to the UN.

This has been proposed before... last term in Cabinet, as a matter of fact. I was abandoned because it would break the implicit bond between the NS region of Canada and this board like HB says.

Anyhow, there would be a much smaller number of people voting if we adopted the election approach suggested. We generally get around 20 votes per minister in elections, while Chex has around 100 endorsements.

When this board holds government elections, if this DOES happen(i highly doubts it does), the PM choses the Cabinet positions from the government. Hence, indirectly everyone choses the Cabinet position. It is up to the PM to choses who gets what. Therefore my system is still democractic.

That's one way to do it. It's not how we choose to form the govenment. I could go into detail why I think the way we constructed the govenment is better but I don't get the impression that the logic of it matters to you.

Sure it's still democratic, but less democratic than our current system. Currently we get direct choice over the PM and the five Ministers. Your system we would only have direct choice over one position. This seems to be a step in the wrong direction.

Parrrrtay - July 9, 2005 01:57 PM (GMT)
Well I am glad to see everyone else doing my job for me here! ;)

Sparta Territories if you have (in your mind) a better way for Canada to be more democratic then please do, as Ess states "cough it up".
New ideas are always welcome. Different opinions and different views are not frowned upon here, we do welcome your views.
But so far I see you taking privilages from the people. (not allowing them to choose who THEY feel best for the cabinet positions)

By not allowing the people of Canada to choose who THEY feel is best for the job is very un-democratic in my eyes.

Myself, I find the system we have in place to be very democratic.

Were you planning to run for delegate?
Do you have someone else in mind that you feel would fill the delegate position better than Chex?

Sparta Territories - July 9, 2005 02:01 PM (GMT)
[COLOR=orange] Daemon take the time to actually read!!! Everyone had a choice in electing the Cabinet! But only the PM choses who gets what position. Example: You vote for Hudson Bay. He gets elected. You want him for MoJ, but Chex give him MoRA. You STILL chose your Cabinet, just not the positon you want.
