Title: Real Time Chat
Description: An alternative means of communication.

Jack_Tarr - June 13, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
**announcement**

The IRC Channel discussed in this thread is now open. It will be there for you 24/7 so please enjoy it.

This URL will take you to the room:

Starlink Server 1

It may take a minute or 2 for the Java applet to load. Once it does you will get a small window.

Enter a nickname: 10 characters max

Leave Username as is.

Leave email blank then click connect

You will be taken directly to our channel #NSCanada

If the only other chatter there is Cstar, don't try to make friends. Cstar is a bot and doesn't speak.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

I thought I'd bounce this off you folks and see how you feel about it. I would love the opportunity to talk to you in "real time". This is something the boards are not capable of but which I feel would enhance the experience quite a bit. I think it would be a lot more fun in RL debates and even in just getting to know one another better.

What I would propose is that we register a room on an IRC net. There are several smaller nets out there which promote family values. I have a sailing chat room on one such net and in over 2 years have only had to use the ban command once. In addition, you do not need special software as many of the nets allow you to get in with just a java capable browser.

My thought would be to select an acceptable time; maybe a couple of times a week for starters when we can meet and just shoot the breeze or have one or more specific topics for discussion.

If this is of interest to you, we can use my sailing room so you can get a feel for it.

Your thoughts?

Ess - June 13, 2005 06:35 PM (GMT)
I think it's a good idea! It's been mentioned here before, but nothing came of it. Is there some way to have it *here* or do we have to go to a separate site?
I'd think it would be cool to have an "enter chat" link here like they have in KoL, but don't know if that'd work...

Anyone else got opinions/ideas?

Parrrrtay - June 13, 2005 06:41 PM (GMT)
Let me know when, where and how and I will be there!

Jack_Tarr - June 13, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
Yes. For example:

Direct Link to #SailingTalk

If you click on this link, the java will load. Then, all you do is enter your nickname and click connect and you are there. It is very simple for the users and there is minimal administration as well.

Ess - June 13, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
That was easy!

Maybe you could make us our own page, post the link and we'll get it started.

People could have a look see and chat whenever they felt like it and you could have set times, too, if you like. :)

Jack_Tarr - June 13, 2005 07:21 PM (GMT)
OK, well, here's the thing, Starlink only allows you to own one channel and I already own #SailingTalk. That being the case, someone else would need to own this one. We could call it #Canada I spose.

If someone is willing to register. They can then make me or whoever a co admin and that way I could help with whatever as I know my way around there.

Starlink Channel Registration

We also need 7 supporters. (People that will use this channel). If we can't get enough right away from here, I can use some of my sailing friends info so we can get started. Is this still doable?

Ess - June 13, 2005 07:30 PM (GMT)
Shay or I could get it started, but let's see how many people we can get from here first.

If we can get 7 from here, that'd be great.

We have 3 so far...

Anyone else, please let us know here! Thanks! :)

Judith Gap - June 13, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
I'd be willing.

Ess - June 13, 2005 07:54 PM (GMT)
Yay!

That's 4... :)

Jack_Tarr - June 13, 2005 07:59 PM (GMT)

Checkers McDog - June 13, 2005 08:36 PM (GMT)
I'm in.

Just tell me what I gotta do.....

Ess - June 13, 2005 08:41 PM (GMT)
Yay!

5 and counting! :D

I think the only person who has to do anything "major" is whoever registers it.

Parrrrtay - June 13, 2005 08:46 PM (GMT)
OK........where are the rest of you heathens at?????

2 to go!

kana da - June 13, 2005 10:14 PM (GMT)
I'd probably sign up. It doesn't require anything to be installed on your computer, does it?

Ess - June 13, 2005 10:50 PM (GMT)
One more to go!

Java has to be enabled, that's all.

Ess - June 14, 2005 02:33 AM (GMT)
I just visited JT in his chat room. They were all having a great time! :D

Redundancies - June 14, 2005 03:53 AM (GMT)
I can join too, though I don't know how often I'd be on...

TinyVillages - June 14, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
Same as Red: I'll join in whenever I can.

Jack_Tarr - June 14, 2005 02:58 PM (GMT)
Great! Looks like we have enough to register a room at starlink-irc. Once we determine who is willing to register it, the rest of us need to provide our nickname (10 characters maximum) and a valid e-mail address so that we can be logged as supporters. (There are no strings to being a supporter.) To keep the channel registered, the admin needs to log in once every 45 days.

Once we are registered, I will get the direct links to our room and post them here.

Also, if anyone wants to add "IRC" software, I will be happy to work with you on that. Please keep in mind that I only know enough about computers to be constantly getting into trouble :D

Hey, I'm like that too and I'm an expert.

Of course, in my case the trouble is usually intentional:
"It's borken!"
"What did you do?"
"This."
"You're not supposed to do that."
"Yeah, but what if an end-user does it? Hmmm?"

Jack_Tarr - June 14, 2005 03:25 PM (GMT)
I was doing just fine till they introduced transistors. Been falling further and further behind ever since. :(

More precisely, 1867 posts commemorates the Constitution Act, 1867. Three colonies of became a federation styled the Dominion of Canada.

I think.
