Title: New Forum Look
Checkers McDog - March 4, 2005 04:52 PM (GMT)
Just so you know, we've got a few people tinkering with the forum, to make it look a little better.
You may already notice the width has been increased.
And these:

, will soon be replaced by some cool new ones.
Please ignore the mess while we iron out the wrinkles :D

I dislike side-scrolling. :(
Just sayin'. :D
Parrrrtay - March 4, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
I have to agree with Ess here, the side-scrolling stinks!
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 05:27 PM (GMT)
We were wondering if that would happen when someone has their monitor resolution set low. For windows users if you right click on the desktop and select properties a dialog box will come up where you can change your display resolution if you want. (click the settings tab; then drag the screen area slider toward "more"; just one step over to 1024X768 will do the trick)
We can put the margins back but it seem a shame to lose all that screen space just for those that have very old monitors or those who don't know how to change their default settings...
If that is what you need just let us know...
Ess - March 4, 2005 05:52 PM (GMT)
I don't want to change my screen resolution and don't see why I should have to just for this place.
I have a newish 19" moniter and the screen res. works just fine for me everywhere else...
*shrugs*
*mutters about a certain someone's (hb) negativity and assuming all others - except bweezy - are idjits* <_<
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 05:57 PM (GMT)
Please don't take it as negativity - wasn't meant that way. I don't claim that everyone is an idiot - I make my own share of mistakes thank you.
I've already suggested to Carb that we adjust the margins back for now. I think the problem is with the way this skin is setting the margins in the first place. It will take some testing but I think if I upgrade the way the skin is built we can accomendate most of the members...
It's a lot more work but there is no hurry...
Parrrrtay - March 4, 2005 06:58 PM (GMT)
I don't want a smaller screen just for this board.
still crying here
Jack_Tarr - March 4, 2005 07:00 PM (GMT)
I don't want to be argumentitive, but I really like the added width. I have a 19" Trinitron set to 1024x768 and there is no side scrolling required. I have my system set for Large Fonts also as I am somewhat hard of seeing :-)

There, there...

Expressing an opinion isn't being argumentative - necessarily. :D
*edit*
I like the new lightning thangies! ^_^
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
Hopefully Carb will put things back when he has a chance (think he maybe currently at work). I'm hopeful that we can get narrower margins without impacting the monitors set at a lower resolution. I may be dreaming but it's worth a try. But will take longer as I have to more or less redo how the skin's CCS is written. (in English the "skin" are the settings, that the admin can adjust, along with style sheet code that controls how the forum appears)
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 07:18 PM (GMT)
On a second read I'm not sure that is English either - hopefully you get the general idea...
Ess - March 4, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
Why don't we see what a few others think and then go with the majority? I'd change if I thought I had good reason to do so.
Arguments for leaving it like it is and me changing my screen res.?
Anyone?
:D
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 07:22 PM (GMT)
That's okay - I don't mind taking a shot at updating the CSS and the board wrapper - if others don't mind the wait. (which they shouldn't since the forum has been narrow for a while)
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
btw - the way I will do that is to create a test forum to play with so as not to mess with this forum. (I'm not enough of an expert to update the tags without messing something up). So once I get the changes made I can have Ess and Parrrty take a look at the test site before we apply the changes. (if they are willing)
I have set it up if you want to see it:
http://s9.invisionfree.com/Test_Canada/index.php?act=idxSo far all I've done is make it match the current skin....

*raises hand*
Willing!
Thanks! :)

Thanks for your support ;)
btw - that is not to say that Carb can't go ahead and load the rest of the new buttons (when he gets a chance). The way the forum code is written that does not require change any to of the CSS code.

I added the new forum markers in the test site if you want to check it out. Not many posts to see but you should get a little of the flavor.
hudson bay - March 4, 2005 09:38 PM (GMT)
I've added the post buttons to the test site which is the next thing I'm going to have Carb update. Go and read an individual post and you will see what the buttons will look like.

Pretty!  ^_^

"Thanks for the tissue Ess" ;)
Well now I am home from work and everything here looks fine on my screen.
I shall just have to play around with the work computer. I think I know how to fix the work one. Just set the resolution to 1024X768 and then adjust the screen with vertical and horizonal buttons. I will have to try that when I go back to work on Monday.
I love the lightening bolts too! Very fancy!!
New buttons....spiffy!
hudson bay - March 5, 2005 12:16 AM (GMT)
That's very good news - thanks! I'm still going to take a shot at solving the problem a different way. But not until we have upgraded the buttons and stuff. You can check the test site to get a feel for what it will look like.
hudson bay - March 5, 2005 12:37 AM (GMT)
I added toned down warning pips to the test site - see what you think...
Carbanousa - March 5, 2005 01:47 AM (GMT)
I'll reduce the width of the margins on the frame by a little. If those with the scrolling problems let me know if it ceases that would be great. A think a comprimise would be the best way forward.

Warning pips look good!

I realized my home PC has display settings to 800x600. I see scrollbars. I wonder if the table size can be adjusted to fit the browser...?

Sorry - thought we covered this. I could be wrong. I can be on too regular a basis! :P
Redundancies - March 5, 2005 05:12 AM (GMT)
Well, I meant that I thought there was some code that would make the table appear wide on a 1024-wide monitor but not cause scrollbars on an 800. It's been a long time since I've seriously played with HTML...
Checkers McDog - March 5, 2005 05:15 AM (GMT)
There's a way to do it.
Take a look at
The SP forums. It's edge-to-edge no matter what your resolution is.

As users of a free service we do not have total control of the code. I think with a rewrite of the skin CSS and board wrappers we may be able expand the margins without scrolling.
Since that will take time I've suggested that we put the margins back to what they were for now and finish upgrading the buttons. Hopefully Carb will have a chance to do that soon.
hudson bay - March 6, 2005 11:55 AM (GMT)
I have made the changes at the test site that will allow the margins to expand without causing scrolling. I even figured out a way to make the logo (which isn't using a background) stay with the margins.
So give it a try. Go to the test site and change your screen resolution back and forth and you'll see that it works the way it should.

Very nice job!
Thanks for doing all that work! ^_^
hudson bay - March 6, 2005 02:33 PM (GMT)
Thanks Ess! Can't wait until Carb has a chance to apply these updates.
I learned a little trick that I didn't know about before - so sometimes it's good to have problems...
Redundancies - March 6, 2005 10:45 PM (GMT)
Very slick. I can even see the table readjusting itself as I adjust the size of my browser window.
I don't suppose we can do any resizing with the Google Banner--when I make my browser narrow enough I get the bottom scrollbar again (though that's not as much of a concern as not being able to see the entire width of the forum...)
hudson bay - March 6, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
Not a good idea to try and mess with the Google ads. That's how they make their money. If they even think you might be trying, in any way, to hide the ads they will drop the site in a heart beat. So, we will just have to live with it - sorry.
Redundancies - March 6, 2005 11:24 PM (GMT)
That's fine, it's not a big deal. I can see how messing with the ads might bother the folks...
hudson bay - March 8, 2005 12:56 AM (GMT)
Good job Carb - things are looking sharp!
