Title: Notes on the Election
Checkers McDog - February 15, 2005 03:37 AM (GMT)
The elections will take place February 24th-27th. Polls will open Thursday morning at 9:00am (Eastern Time), and close Sunday night at 11:59pm, in accordance with our constitution.
The election campaign starts immediately.
All nations that reside in Canada are eligible to present themselves as candidates. Interested nations should announce their intention to run in the forum that corresponds to the position they'd like to assume. All candidates must announce their intentions to run at least 24 hours before the polls open.
All candidates must remember that they have to disclose any conflicts of interest, in accordance with the
Conflict of Interest Guidelines.
As said in the law:
| QUOTE |
For greater certainty, a Government Position in a region outside of the Region of Canada shall be defined as any position of influence within a governing structure of a region outside the Region of Canada, including those that are equivalent to the Canadian positions of “Minister“ “Deputy Minister“ “Ambassador”, "Delegate", "Founder" and “CIA Intelligence Agent“.
|
Anyone who holds such positions outside of this region, must formally declare them
here.
Candidates are encouraged to post platforms and policy announcements, while average citizens are encouraged to pose questions to the declared candidates.
If anyone has any questions about the cabinet postions or the duties required, I'd encourage them to PM myself, or someone else from cabinet, so that all such questions can be answered. Questions may also be posted in this thread.
I wish all the candidates the best of luck.

Question: Are citizens allowed to nominate other people for a position? I realize that the other person would have to accept, but I think this would help encourage more people to run for office.(ie. If they're unsure if they would have any support, but then someone nominates them)

Interesting idea. Of course you can always TG or PM your encouragement. Nominations sound like fun. Hopefully people pick up on the idea...
Carbanousa - February 18, 2005 02:46 PM (GMT)
It would certainly be worth investigating. Nominations for upcoming elections could be acquired or given during the present Cabinet. The rest of the Election process need not be altered too much.}
I, for one, really like this idea and it isn't that hard to implement either :).

THere is no law that I can see that would prohibit nominations. If someone is nominated, they are free to decline it if they don't want to run. I suppose if someone is inclined, they can nominate someone, and see if that system works. If there is a problem with nominations that becomes apparent, I'm sure it would be pretty easy to pass a nomination law that is a few paragraphs long that would set out the guidelines and avoid any such problems in the future.
hudson bay - February 18, 2005 03:04 PM (GMT)
I think what is need is some way to encourage nominations. Of course if someone made the first post and asked for other nominations that might get the ball rolling. If the idea catchs on then maybe a nomination thread could become a standard part of the forum setup that Checkers does for each election.
Checkers McDog - February 19, 2005 11:21 PM (GMT)
How about I add a nominations thread to this forum? Just for this time....if it catches on, maybe we can create a seperate forum for it next time.
In it people can nominate others for positions, and then if they decide to run they can post in the appropriate forum, and if not, they can decline in that thread.

Since it is now past 9am EST (24 hours prior to the opening of the polls), no more nations may declare their intentions to run in this election.

Best of luck to all the candidates. This has been a smooth and interesting campaign.

On a personal note, this election will mark a full year since last February's first elections under the current constitutional regime. This easily marks the longest period of active government and democracy in regional history, and I'd like to thank everyone in this region, past and present alike, for contributing to the success and stability of this place. This region can only function with committed, diverse and active individuals. We are very lucky to continue to possess them.
