Title: Guest Login Poll
Description: Discussion Thread

C-Ton - September 11, 2004 04:52 PM (GMT)
Can we get this going soon?

Option 2 should read.

No, but members should login whenever they wish to post or vote.

This way anyone can view any thread and links to threads can be posted around nationstates.

Carbanousa - September 11, 2004 05:09 PM (GMT)
I've merged the poll and discussion thread for ease.
With regards to each option available, I would like to offer the following as a starting point for discussion.

QUOTE (C-Ton Poll Option 1)
Yes, but no posting or voting

Currently visitors/guests are able to do this. This preset permission masks from InvisionFree make it possible to post, review, upload new threads and topics, but not vote in forum polls. As a general rule, the Constitution needs to be satisfied, so for voting in Elections or UN polls a resident Nation within Canada is preferred although UN status is not mandatory requirement.
Guests and visitors are egligibly distinguishable as both permission masks are able to view, reply, upload new topics/threads, but not upload new polls, or participate in existing polls. In essence, this option already exists.
QUOTE (C-Ton Poll Option 2)
No, but login should be changed for when members wish to vote.

If this is regarding Election polls, there is a stipulation that you must register as a forum member within 24 hours of the polls being opened. If this is not done, Email validation is enabled to prevent a breach of our voting legislation by new members who joined outside of the twenty-four hour cut-off point. In my opinion, this works satisfactorily at the moment
QUOTE (C-Ton Poll Option 3)
No

I don't really consider this an option in the current context.

On a more practical and systemic level, it would probably mean the creation of new Forum masks, but that isn't difficult at all. An inital suggestion would be something along these lines:

NRM - non-resident member;
RM - resident member;

whilst leaving guest and visitor largely unmodified, or removing these completely. However, I do not think this possible as guest and visitor would be default permission masks generated by the InvisionFree Administrator team. All that would be required is the need to import permission settings from other masks (guest and visitor). If a NRM moved their main Nation, or puppet Nation for that matter, into the Region of Canada, then their permission mask would simply need to be changed from NRM to RM.

Having thought about it from a different angle, it would be impossible to allow guests to log in because when they log in they cease to be a guest and become a member with a physical profile. In simpler terms, a user-profile is required is required to log in. To alter this it would mean the deletion of the guest mask and pre-registering users, which would be a time consuming process if the guest mask can be deleted which I doubt.

Hey Carbanousa...

What I wanted for option 2 was that no login is required to view any threads unless someone wishes to reply or vote.

This way I can post links on nationstates forums and people can quickly click on the link and view the post.

Carbanousa - September 11, 2004 05:34 PM (GMT)
I've just copied the poll across. I can change this wording/option if you give me the wording you'd like. :)

EDIT
I think I was just being dumb in the above response.

No, but members should login whenever they wish to post or vote.

(I already put it up at the top.. does it work better?)

Thanks man

In order to vote in polls you have to Log-in as your member-profile. For posting it isn't necessary. Hopefully, Checkers or DrunkenHosers will pick up on this thread as this is more their area. It woudn't be to hard to disable posting rights for visitors or guests though (point, click). :)

There's a distinct difference between visitors and guests.

Visitors have signed up on the forums, and may post, but not vote. Guests are not registered on our forums, and are currently not allowed to view any of our forum.

I vote for 1, I think guests should be able to view the board, but not post or vote.

EDIT:
Oh, and this poll doesn't work for me.

Blackshear - September 12, 2004 02:31 AM (GMT)
As stated previously, I agree with Chex's position on this subject. The poll doesn't work for me either.

C-Ton - September 12, 2004 03:18 PM (GMT)
I dont think I made my suggestion clear enough.

I think that anyone should be able to view message threads (unless they are secure areas) without logging in.

But if you want to click the post button you will be redirected to the login screen.

OR

You can login first and then the site will work as normal.

Sorry about the poll

Can someone fix it then please?

C-Ton

Well, the problem with the poll is that the creator said multiple choice instead of single choice. We'd need to create a new poll.

Blackshear - September 19, 2004 12:14 AM (GMT)
I was wondering if there has been any movement on this front.

Checkers McDog - September 19, 2004 12:59 AM (GMT)
Well, as I see it, there has not been a single person saying they are against it so far, so I'm not so sure there's a need for a poll. I say we just do it, and if problems/concerns arise, we can get rid of it.

I'm currently working on changing the view permissions/masks, I'll get the guest viewing up asap.

Thanks for dealing with that, Checkers! :)

Checkers McDog - September 19, 2004 05:29 PM (GMT)

I know ^_^ :D

Blackshear - September 19, 2004 05:41 PM (GMT)
Any problem if I announce this change to the world? Sounds press secretary-ish to me.

(By change, I mean the open viewing of the forum, not Checkers' ass-kicking ability. That's old news. )
