Title: Pokemon of the week
Description: Strategies for various pokemon
Reaper - August 29, 2004 12:55 PM (GMT)
Ok here's an attempt to revive Zephyrion's pokemon guide.
Please vote(post here) for a pokemon you want a guide on, and during weekends, i will choose the the one with the highest number of votes, and give a short guide on it. (i.e. stating it's strengths, if any, and weaknesses, how to use it etc.)
Don't worry, this is not a secret mission to make this forums more active (actually, it is...shhhhh...), so post the pokemon you want to have a guide on.
Feel free to also post guides of your own.
These are the pokemon done already:

And these are the candidates for analysis:
I'll start this week with Zangoose.
Zangoose
A normal type pokemon.
Strengths: Att, speed
Weaknesses: defences, HP
Ability: Immunity (cannot be poisoned...heh)
So, we know that zangoose has great Att and Spd stat, so that makes it a great sweeper. Moreover it has the ability to learn swords dance, and that would make it even more powerful. Switch him in against a ghost type, swords dance and then finish off the pathetic ghost.
If they switch out their ghost for a sponge, it's time to give them an evil grin  . Why? It's because most sponges rely on toxic to deal damage, and with zangoose's immunity, it cannot be poisoned. But should they come with an attack that can seriously hurt you, get out.
While you cannot deal serious damage to a sponge, the sponge would also be unable to deal serious damage to you*. (except aggron, which you can OHKO with brick break, ie it's not really a great sponge). So go swords dancing until you have maxed out your Att, then hack at them like a woodcutter would to a tree.
*See above
Firstly, give Zangoose a jolly nature to further increase it's speed. (You will need it)
Next max EPs in Att and Spd.
Now time for the moveset.
Double-edge (120 base dmg, 180 after STAB whoo hoo)
Shadowball (remember about that part about ghosts?)
Brick break (should you face a steel/rock type)/Aerial ace(against fighting types)**
Swords dance
** Should you choose to stay and fight a sponge, i believe brick break would be better (since skarmory is ever so popular), if not, aerial ace should work nicely on fighting types that try to take advantage of you, and it can take care of gr*** and bug types as well.
As for held item, give it leftovers so that it would have a better chance against sponges.
However, always remember that sponges>sweepers, so if all else fails, switch out.
But given immunity, zangoose should be able to handle most sponges with a little less difficulty, as said earlier.
So all in all, zangoose is a powerful pokemon. Should you switch in at the right moment, obliterating the enemies' team with this weasel should not be a problem.
Alright, so start voting for next week's pokemon of the week.
(please agree on one pokemon, and not have 1 vote for every single pokemon :P)

Say what? How can you change your pkm nature?! Please explain.
I'll like to know better about Sableye.
Reaper - August 30, 2004 10:19 AM (GMT)
Eh...you don't change his nature....you breed them until you get one with that nature.
HypeBeamer - August 30, 2004 05:28 PM (GMT)
How bout Dusclops? He's rather big, ugly, and has annoyed me with his friggin' high defenses, so I'd like to get one of my own.

Ohh, I see. Is there any way you can breed them in orther to get a certain nature?
kyodongrougre - August 30, 2004 07:58 PM (GMT)
or u could just catch them until their nature is what you want
HypeBeamer - August 30, 2004 11:11 PM (GMT)
That's a good method for Pokemon like Heracross, who won't miss out on breeding moves. But for others, breeding can be worth the effort.
Reaper - August 31, 2004 04:57 AM (GMT)
Firstly, there is no shortcut for getting a specific nature. It is completely random.
Secondly, breeding allows you to get egg moves or tms on the pokemon you want. Sometimes, it is also easier/faster than catching the pokemon in the wild.
Nite-Mare - August 31, 2004 06:34 AM (GMT)
Stupid old man throw eggs at me faster than I can hatch 'em.
Could I have a list of all the pkm natures and their benefits?

i say seadra (i can't get kingdra.)
kyodongrougre - August 31, 2004 09:32 PM (GMT)
since theres so many demands do something like 'pokemon of the day'. it will be much appreciated. what if all the pokemon voted are tied to one? pick mine first hehe since i posted first
Reaper - September 1, 2004 12:58 AM (GMT)
If they all tie, then i'll think about it.
Probably draw lots, but i'll consider your request.
Nite-Mare - September 1, 2004 05:52 AM (GMT)
Well, we could take a pkm each and do it ourselves, and that way we could cover more space faster, and everyone should be able to fill in the spots.
Or you could go by number and take the guess work off.
Reaper - September 1, 2004 07:57 AM (GMT)
I already said im my first post that anyone can discuss about any pokemon they want. I will only do one or two each weekend.(unless i have the time)
kyodongrougre - September 1, 2004 04:37 PM (GMT)
can anyone else help me with walrein? and btw i still want that eon ticket and when i was looking through the pages it attracted my attention...hehe
Reaper - September 2, 2004 06:02 AM (GMT)
Well, since i have a little time now, i'll do walrein first.
Walrein
Well this overgrown walrus has some pretty neat stats, but it's speed is plain ugly.
It has a fat HP, decent defences and decent attack stats.
This means that walrein can be both a special attacker, or a physical attacker. (he cannot be a sweeper due to his non stellar Att/SpAtt stat and ugly speed)
Should you EP split, it can even utilize both Special and physical attacks.
Alright lets start off with the special moveset first.
Ok lets forget it....his special attacks stink.
Now on with the physical moveset.
Wow....it's a whole lot better.
Walrein@leftovers
Adamant (eps in Att and HP)
Earthquake
Curse
Rockslide
Double edge/Rest
Right....Given his horrendous speed, cursing will not do much harm. In fact, it would boost both his Att and Def stat, much like bulk up.(it can't learn bulk up)
After cursing, your Att stat would be high enough to deal high, maybe fatal damage. Use double edge(FrLg only) for pure damage, and earthquake/rockslide to deal with anything resistant to DE. Leftovers would help you stay in and fight longer.
Alright thats Walrein for you.
But wait, look at his HP and defences....shouldn't we abuse it?
 Why not?
Although his defences are not extremely high, and Walrein has a multitude of weaknesses, both of physical and special, we still can abuse his high hp to absorb some damage, while dealing damage to the enemy at the same time.
Walrein@leftovers
Relaxed (Eps in HP n Def)
Toxic
Rest
Curse
Rockslide
This is generally ok but since walrein is weak against fighting, it cannot be a real physical sponge. (Most sweepers have brick break)
As for the EP split Walrein, you would use ice beam and surf as they gain bonus from STAB. To make your physical attack stronger, we'll make use of curse.
Walrein@leftovers
Quiet (Eps in HP(1/2) SpAtt(1/4) Att(1/4), or HP(1/2) SpAtt(1/2))
Ice beam
Surf
Curse
Rockslide
However this may or may not work as curse simply increases Att to slowly. If it had swords dance it would be much better. Nonetheless, it is still a very powerful pokemon. (I still hate it's speed though)
Nite-Mare - September 2, 2004 03:09 PM (GMT)
Since fr and lg are coming out, it would be good if you profile the starter pkm from those versions, so we have a good idea of what to do with them.
kyodongrougre - September 2, 2004 05:04 PM (GMT)
yea is it still squirtle/bulbasaur/charmander? and thx for walrein
Nite-Mare - September 2, 2004 05:20 PM (GMT)
Yup, those still are. I can't wait to have charizard.

Ok,
Kingdra
Firstly, Seadra? Why not Kingdra?
Kingdra is alot better than Seadra, in terms of stats, type alignments and ability.
It is, essentially, just a much improved version of Seadra.
When Seadra evolves into Kingdra, it gains the dragon type, removing water's weakness to electricity and grass. If you think "oh dear another dragon! My team's gonna be ripped apart by ice beam...", fret not, cause Kingdra's water side removes the dragon's side's weakness to ice. This leaves kingdra with only one weakness: dragon.
Kingdra also gains the swift swin ability. This doubles his speed in rain, making him an extremely fast pokemon in the rain. Coupled with a beneficial nature and EPs in speed, Kingdra can easily outspeed any pokemon during drizzles.
Although Kingdra's Att stat is decent, and it has the ability to learn the amazing move dragon dance, it does not have the physical attacks to benefit from these. (Even in FrLg, he won't gain much in terms of physical attacks)
So this leaves us with only one option: the special attacking Kingdra.
Firstly get a timid nature and give it leftovers.
50% EPs go into HP/SpAtt and the rest in Spd.
Given his limited move list, the moveset of Kingdra is quite fixed.
The only moves worth considering are:
Rain dance
Surf
Ice Beam
Dragon breath
Sadly, Kingdra cannot learn calm mind, hence is unable to sweep. The standard moveset is also easily countered using a steel type with decent SpDef, and sandstorm, or a special sponge like blissey or ludicolo. (rain dance even helps ludicolo). Thus the usefullness of Kingdra is really quite limited, despite it's amazing stats.
Seadra
If you can't get Kingdra, you can use a seadra with the same moveset, just replace Rain dance with agility.
Also get a modest nature to make up for the damage that you will lose.
Essentially it is the same, just that you lose damage from Surf and dragonbreath because of the lack of rain dance and STAB respectively. Also Seadra has much weaker defences and alot less HP. I really wouldn't reccomend using Seadra.

that depends on if u think walrein is a good sponge
Reaper - September 4, 2004 06:05 AM (GMT)
Haven't i done weezing already?
Nvm, I'll cut and paste.
Weezing
Weezing@leftovers
Lax nature (Eps in Hp and Def)
Haze
Will-o-wisp
Flamethrower (if u r concerned abt skarmory) or sludgebomb
Explosion
Basically a sponge cum hazer. Will-o-wisp burns your opponent so that they take damage over time, and decrease their attack power. Haze is used to prevent sweepers from working, and the rest is self explanatory. A very typical moveset.
Another good sponge is Skarmory.
Skarmory
Skarmory(leftovers/chesto berry)Sturdy
Impish (Eps in Hp and Def)
Roar
Spikes
Toxic
Sandstorm/protect/rest (I'd go with rest)
Use toxic to deal damage, and spikes to punish them for switching. Roar is to remove anything you don't like, or as a pseudohazing move. Also lets you deal extra damage to your opponent from spikes, as he is forced to switch. Rest is used to replenish HP.
Nite-Mare - September 4, 2004 06:28 AM (GMT)
Woah, that's a good moveset for skarmory, I never thought of putting roar to a pkm.
Reaper - September 4, 2004 06:49 AM (GMT)
Alright, I'll get down to do Sableye.
Sableye
At first glance, sableye looks kinda scary. It's also somewhat rare. So should we use him? Well, lets see.
First lets look at it's stats.
It's Hp is average, Att and SpAtt are average too. So are it's defences. It's speed is sad. Ok Statwise, It's bad.
Now, lets look at it's ability: Keen eye.
Ok it's worse. No one ever use sand attack/ mudslap in battles, and double team can be easily overcome by switching in a strong pokemon to deliver a OHKO.
Now, it's skills.
It learns shadowball, mean look, confuse ray, detect and knock off.
Through breeding, it learns psych up, recover and moonlight.
Pretty nice moves there, but sadly Sableye does not have the stats to utilize them.
In a Pvp match Sableye would not stand a chance against most decent pokemon.
It's shadowball would do too little damage. Mean look and confuse ray are good for an annoyer, but sableye does not have the defences or HP to be one. Recover is excellent on pokemon with high defences, or alot of HP. Sableye has neither.
But how about in game purposes? Maybe sableye would fare better in-game?
Lets see.
It's Ghost/dark type complements each other well, making it immune to fighting, normal and psychic. Moreover, the two types just cancel each other's weaknesses, leaving sableye with no weaknesses at all. Wow, you might say, but then again, weaknesses and resistance aren't everything. Given it's stats, maybe you should keep that wow for some other pokemon.
Being a ghost and dark type, sableye is virtually immune to the Lati. Moreover, it learns mean look. Hence it is able to lock the Lati in place. With confuse ray, it would be able to chip Hp off the Lati slowly, and with shadowball, it can take a chunk off. Used together, you can easily drop the Lati's Hp down to the red zone, making it easy for you to capture.
However it is not so fantastic when it comes to capturing other pokemon. Other than confuse ray, it does not have any other status changing moves(unless u teach it toxic)
Since Sableye is able to learn so many good moves through leveling up, breeding and tms, it also make a good tm slave. I.e. use it to breed moves off to other pokemon.
It is in the humanshape group, hence it is able to breed with the following pokemon and their evolutions.
Abra
Machop
Drowzee
Hitmonlee
Hitmonchan
Mr.Mime
Jynx
Electabuzz
Magmar
Hitmontop
Makuhita
Meditite
Cacnea
Spinda
This is by no means all the pokemon that can learn sableye's attacks by breeding.
You can also use chain breeding to get certain moves to other pokemon.
For example, say you wanna teach zangoose brick break. Other than by just teaching zangoose brick break using the tm, you can also teach the tm to sableye, and breed brick brick to spinda. Then breed spinda with zangoose to get brick break on it. Hence should you want to use a tm several times, try to breed the move onto those pokemon instead.
Here are a list of moves that are good for breeding.(that sableye can learn)
Recover
Shadowball
Mean look
Confuse ray
Brick break
Calm mind
Aerial ace
Facade
So although Sableye does not seem cut out for battling Pvp, it is a pretty decent in-game pokemon.
kyodongrougre - September 7, 2004 02:40 AM (GMT)
and i guess mawile is worse off
Reaper - September 7, 2004 03:15 AM (GMT)
Probably, but i can only confirm it after i have looked at it's data.
Can't seem to think of any nice attacks on mawile other than false swipe. And even then i think you have to breed to get it on him.
