Macavity smirked. "My, my, don't you look pleased with yourself."

The white queen smiled, rolling onto her back and lazily stretching a paw. A long golden chain was wrapped around her paw; she lay sprawled across a pile of such trifles, all stolen from human homes. "Is there a reason to be displeased?"

He made no comment on the fact that she did not address him with the respect due one of his station. As much as it galled him to admit it, he had been making exceptions for her ever since she had arrived.

He could see why so many had been drawn to her. Even if at first glance she seemed simple, what with her love of baubles and trinkets, there was just something about her that fascinated.

And like her baubles and shining toys, he had wanted to have her. Being the tom he was, and having fully earned his reputation, he had lied and schemed until she showed up at his door of her own accord. That she stayed was at his behest, and because he kept her entertained.

And, maybe, because of something else.

It had started as something he had made up… the lie that piqued her interest.

He almost wished it were true.

Almost.

Am I Growltiger's son, like you think I am?

She cocked her head, still waiting for an answer. "Well?"

He let out a low chuckle. "No, I suppose not."

"Is there a problem then?"

"No, Griddlebone. No problems."
