A/N: I hope the idea of it is clear enough to be understood. I wanted to leave it kind of interpretive, but I think I got it across well enough. Hopefully. :) If it totally doesn't make sense, let me know, and I'll explain it. If this author's note makes no sense, just ignore it...

The refusal was a fresh wound weighing upon her heart. She tried to mask the tears that lay upon her gentle, tawny face. He couldn’t know that she was crying. Why did he reject her love? Why couldn’t he love her? She would never fully understand what barred them from each other, though he was sadly aware of the barricade that lay between them.

“Why?!” she cried to him, forgetting herself in a final, desperate moment of passion, “Why do you keep saying no? Why can’t we be together?!”

He stared at her face before him, wrenched to see her heartbroken cries.

“You don’t realize who I really am,” he whispered quietly.

“Why can’t you tell me?” she screamed, “Why can’t you ever tell me?!”

She submitted to her sobs, collapsing against his thin, muscular frame.
There was the sound of clanging glass as her sobs wracked the surface of the mirror she lay sprawled against, her own mind the divider between her and her love, a reflection of who she was, and who lay beyond the looking glass.
