Inside, the room was bright, with white-painted walls reflecting the harsh fluorescent lighting of the lamps above. Everything was meticulously clean, perfectly pristine.
Outside, the world was cold and dreary, black and somber. Rain pelted the ground, a steady rhythm of water hitting asphalt. Long groans of thunder rose intermittently above the din, soft and distant moans contrasting the sharp staccato of the rain. Small flickers of lightning flooded the world with a brilliant light for just an instant, before thrusting it back into darkness.
But those inside were immune to the effects of this storm, perhaps even unaware of it. Everyone, save for the lone cat that sat upon the counter, eyes almost glazed over as it simply watched from within, fur matted, tail twitching, shivering. A hacking cough and a desperate choke filled its lungs.
It had been an interminable few months since the debilitating illness had taken over, since a life once so happy and bright had become so dark and desolate like the storm. But the pain would soon be over.
Ears perked up at the sound of footsteps. It was the veterinarian. She would be bringing solace, in the form of a syringe.
The cat turned away from the storm that ravaged the outer world, a world it would no longer be a part of. What awaited it on the other side was uncertain. Would it be bright like the room? Would it be dark like the storm?
Would it be…?
