Title: Happy Fourth of July
Aural Vampire - July 4, 2008 12:50 PM (GMT)
Happy fourth to anyone else living in the United States!
>:D It's barbecue time for me and my roommates.

*at work*
You mean it's a holiday today? <_<
Apollinian Artist - July 6, 2008 06:25 PM (GMT)
Yay, happy fourth indeed... er, a couple days late...
I'm in France, but there are a couple Americans here who still celebrate the holiday. We had patriotic orchestra music pumping out at top volume and made an extra effort to speak English. :P

Know this post is about two weeks too late, but I'm sorry (this'll sound really mean to those non-americans who posted-sorry!) those posts made me laugh out loud! I know, I know, I'm american, so I know about all the strictly american holidays, but, it seems odd to a naive michigan farm girl that people don't know about the fourth of july!
And for the benefit of Cassandra, yes there is a holiday on the fourth of july. It's called- you guessed it- the Fourth of July. Aren't Americans creative? :) Anywho, it celebrates the day America won the war and gained independance from England. Patriotic holiday for America. Eh, makes sense non-americans wouldn't know much about. Why the heck would you care? Anywho, just a day we all go and see parades and have barbecues.
Also, just out of curiosity, do non-americans know what Michigan is? Sorry, just wondering!

XD Cassandra is from the United States.
She was being sarcastic because her boss does not give his employees the day off on the Fourth of July.
Cassandra - July 20, 2008 11:45 PM (GMT)
My boss doesn't believe in holidays except Christmas and Easter. <_<

Oh. Now I feel pretty stupid. Well...*ahem* Right.
Cassandra - July 23, 2008 01:39 AM (GMT)
Ah, it's no biggie. It's basically impossible to tell where I'm from anyway, since the internet is so anonymous... and there are Cats fans all over the world. ^_^
Rubidia - July 23, 2008 01:44 AM (GMT)
I know! Its always so cool to meet a fan from another country! It shouldn't be as exciting as I find it, but, hey, I live in a secluded town, and meeting a person from another state seems cool to me, so...yeah. ^_^

I think my most "exciting" experience was chatting with Cats fans from Russia. I've always had something of an obsession with the Russian language and (pre-Soviet) culture... It was really exciting to see that I had learned enough Russian to communicate with someone that actually speaks the language. :ph43r:

lol, yeah Russia is pretty cool. Last year I found myself in a fascination for the Romanov family when I found this Diary book of Anastatia that my sister had.
Apollinian Artist - August 3, 2008 01:29 PM (GMT)
Ooh, Russia... I like, I like.
Yea, if anyone was wondering, I'm actually American too. I realize now I was super vague about it in my post. I really was in France when I wrote that, and it really was something to get to speak English a whole day.
My experience is, however, that people in France, at least, would know what Michigan was because of universities and sports. A lot of people look to take classes in the US, and a fair number of people are into US teams and know what state they're from and everything. Usually more than I know...
What's great is when I used to live in Vermont, and tell other AMERICANS where I was from, and they'd be like, "Oh, Vermont, which state is that in?"

XD That's kind of terrible. But then, the population of the United States at large is not known for its academic brilliance.
Cassandra - August 3, 2008 11:05 PM (GMT)
Yeah, no kidding. <_<
Them: So what did you major in?
Me: Linguistics. :D
Them: Oh... wow... So how many languages do you speak?
Me: *facepalm* That's... not... quite what linguists do.

Yep, I've run into a few laugh out loud dumb situations. The funniest one I heard about from my friend, so I wasn't actually present when it happened, but I'll tell you about it anyways! So, my friend was at dance and another girl walks in and informs everyone that she burned her hand that morning. When they asked her how, she says 'On hand lotion'. Further investigation revealed that she couldn't get lotion out of the bottle, so she put it in the microwave to get it off the sides of the bottle. Yeah, not exactly the brightest idea.
Another funny one was something my sister said. I had just returned from my fist trip to D.C. and was dicussing the monuments and statues at Gettysburg with this guy from my church. He said that with the ones of soldiers on horses, if the horse had all their legs on the ground, they weren't injured or killed in war. If they had one leg up, they were injured in war. And if they were rearing up, they were killed in war. Then my sister asks him: "Who, the horse or the soldier?" <_<
