Title: Un-Favorite Characters
Description: Not grammatically correct, but fun!

Cassandra - June 14, 2008 09:39 PM (GMT)
In the spirit of Aural Vampire's Favorite Characters thread, here's the one where we discuss which characters we don't like to write about, and why.

I'll start with my least favorite female character (because the male one is likely to get me stoned to death by fangirls  though that comment might give it away): Electra

I just cannot get inside that cat's head. I don't see her as having much of a personality of her own, and I don't like the fanon interpretation of her as the tomboy with little luck in love; this is probably because I have no clue where that particular viewpoint came from - I don't see it in the video at all. I like her best as a minor character that's only present to fill the ranks or supply one-liners when necessary. In my opinion, she works best as a quieter, more serious foil to Etcetera, but Jemima and Victoria already have that covered pretty well. So I don't really know how to write her. And since I've never been all that enthralled with her anyway, I don't write about her.

Aural Vampire - June 15, 2008 01:34 AM (GMT)
I can totally see that. XD

I don't like to write about Bombalurina, if I must be honest. XD I used her for Unremarkable and it was so difficult to write, and I felt like I was mutilating her character. Oh snap, revealing what characters I used! >_>

I just can't write "sexy" stuff in any way, shape, or form. XD Not that I haven't been trying, I just hate the results every time. So it's difficult for me to enjoy writing about a character who is so sexual. I dislike writing about Rum Tum Tugger for the same reasons.

XD I'm sure it would help if I wasn't so averse to sexuality in general.

Alex0821 - June 15, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
This is a hard question for me to answer, because in one of my stories, I included almost every character from the show XD I really like writing about all of them, because it allows me to explore their personalities. I tend to avoid writing about Growltiger, Griddlebone, and those characters, mainly because I don't know much about them and I don't really feel as though I know enough about them to write about them accurately.

As for who I'm sick of reading about, I'd say Misto - mainly because he's almost always paired with Victoria, Tugger, or Munkustrap, and those pairings have just become boring for me. Also, I don't really like reading about magic and mystical stuff like that *shrugs*.

Cassandra - June 15, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
Ah yes, Mistoffelees is the #1 male character I do not like to write (or, coincidentally) read about. I hate deus ex machina characters (just ask me about C.C. in Code Geass!).

Then there's the fact that nobody characterizes him correctly. He's shy and quiet, not a womanizing flirt. He gets friendly with a number of queens (though he doesn't really seem to be close to anybody until Tugger introduces him as a magician) - you don't see him screwing around with toms, despite all the slash crazy fangirls. Other than popping out of nowhere to save the day and what we're told in the song, he's got as little real personality as Electra. <_<

And when reading about him, I can't stand the buckets of angst, all the boy on boy wannabe porn, and the "trouble with love and magic" garbage. And let's not forget the Pairing Wars. Does he belong with Electra, Jemima, Victoria, Rum Tum Tugger, or Mary Sue? Oh noes! Not like it particularly matters who the immortal, omniscient, omnipotent mage ends up with, as long as he angst-fully defeats Macavity at the last second after loads of horribly written manipulation, "cleverness", and battle, not to mention the bad slashy subtext. Not that I'm opinionated on the matter or anything. :P

Aural Vampire - June 15, 2008 11:24 PM (GMT)
Now that you point all that out, I do agree with most of what you said. It's very rare that I will really enjoy a story that focuses mainly on Mistoffelees. It's slightly more interesting when he's given the duality of Quaxo/Mistoffelees, but most of the time stories about him end up being whiny balls of angst for no real reason.

You know what I would like to see? A story where Mr. Mistoffelees is like a Jellicle super hero like the Rumpus Cat. No one realizes Quaxo is Mr. Mistoffelees, even though he LOOKS THE SAME, just like in all those hero comics. XD That might actually end up entertaining.

Alex0821 - June 15, 2008 11:42 PM (GMT)
I think the only Misto-centered fic I liked was a one-shot about Quaxo and Misto, which was kind of like Misto being some spirit that only Quaxo knew about, and how he was kind of in love with said spirit (I think it was called For the love of Magic, or something like that... I'll find it and post a link). It was just a very interesting take on an overdone topic.

I also hate reading about Cassandra because most writers just make her a crazy, two-dimensional bitch (not sure if I'm allowed to swear in these forums... if not I'll change that word XD)... when she's written for properly, she's a great character to read about, but most writers (at least, those I've encountered) don't dig deeply enough into her persona.

Cassandra - June 16, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
 Oh my god, I totally agree about Cassandra (as if that wouldn't be obvious from my chosen pen name). There is so much more to her than the snobby, self-centered bitch that most fans see. I do blame a lot of that on fan immaturity, because the argument I get most often for it is this: she's ugly/she looks funny. The "bitch" aspect is secondary and there's usually no better reason for it than that she snubs Grizabella (who doesn't?).

She's regal and, as my friend once put it, stoic. Things don't faze her because there's a certain maturity and withdrawnness to her, which imo makes her very fascinating to write and read about, provided she's written well (though I admit I see her differently from a lot of people, just read Birdcage and you'll see what I mean). This is making me want to work more on another story about Cassandra I had started...

And as a last note, swearing is perfectly allowable. It says right in the rules that it's a community for adults and that the easily offended are invited to leave. :D

Alex0821 - June 16, 2008 12:40 AM (GMT)
Yes, Cassandra is DEFINITELY very mature, and stoic is a great word to describe her. I never quite understood why everyone considered her a bitch, either... everyone snubs Griz, and what Cassandra does isn't NEARLY as bitchy as what some of the other's do.

And Cassandra is NOT ugly XD I actually think she's quite beautiful, as far as CATS characters go.

Aural Vampire - June 16, 2008 12:53 AM (GMT)
Does anyone else find it ironic that Cassandra gets termed a "bitch" for how she acts and snubs Grizabella, and yet the fans give her the exact same treatment?

You are different and therefore must be bad.

Somehow I think they missed part of the point of the show. XD

If anything, I'd say Pouncival is worse, especially in the movie. I mean, he outright scratches Grizabella when he approaches her.

Alex0821 - June 16, 2008 01:07 AM (GMT)
Haha yeah, it is ironic. It might also have something to do with her demeanor. For instance, during "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," when she has her line, she says it very... hmm, I'm having trouble coming up with a word to describe it. Pompous? Maybe... but she doesn't seem pleasent, do you know what I mean? Maybe that's where it comes from.

I once wrote a story where she was a big bitch, but it was only because I had her mated to Alonzo, and I found it funny the way he sort of accepted how rude she was to him. But overall, I don't think that's really how she is.

And not only does Pouncival scratch her, but later he, like, butt-rubs her... Pouncival's very strange XD

Apollinian Artist - June 16, 2008 06:14 AM (GMT)
I definitely know exactly what you mean... um, that is, in reference to... basically all previous posts.

Misto is pretty much constantly overdone. BUT there are some decent fics out there featuring him. To Love Your Magic, as afore mentioned, is a lovely one, as well as a few others that I know I at least enjoyed. Electra I actually like to write/read about, because she does not appear to be as bambi-eyed as Jemima, giggly as Etcetera or stunning as Victoria. She's just kind of there, and for some reason that makes me sympathize with her more sometimes than the other female kittens. I guess it's sort of easier for me to relate to the not-so-perfect or interesting or attention-grabbing characters sometimes. ^_^

Bombalurina I too have a hard time writing about because to me, in order to give her a third dimension, you have to very carefully work around her mask of promiscuity and be painstakingly convincing in the process. It's just too hard for me. I'd end up screwing it all over, and readers would be all, wtf, what did you do to her??

And I think one of the factors contributing to the anti-Cassandra movement is that some fans are convinced that Cassandra has a thing for Munkustrap. There are a couple scenes in the movie to suggest this (if you squint, that is...). So the hardcore Munkustrap/Demeter fans, thousands that there are, also go spastic on Cassandra for trying to "steal" Munk from poor Demeter...

Cassandra - June 16, 2008 03:56 PM (GMT)
 Well then I certainly hope those fangirls never see the US tours, because their poor worldview would be shattered...

Aural Vampire - June 18, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
Hah, yeah, it was kind of jarring for me when I first saw it and Demeter wasn't with Munkustrap. XD I still love that pairing, even though I've only seen it in the movie.

(I know this is several months after this topic was actually active, but, I figured, what the heck!) On the Misto matter, I actually read this one fic once that I really enjoyed, about Misto doing some experiments, and Pouncival was in his den one day, and something exploded, and he became Rumpus Cat, and I thought that was very cute!

I did like that one a lot. It's got a sequel, or it's a prequel and the other one was written first. I don't remember.

I'm a terrible one for sticking to the same few characters all the time. I often have trouble writing Mistoffelees, I'm just never happy with how I write his character. Same can be said for Tugger at times. Aside from that, the kittens probably. I have an allergy to cuteness.

Rubidia - December 29, 2008 03:12 PM (GMT)
Well, I think my least favorite to write about is Tugger. I haven't really tried to do much with him, becasue I don't care for him much in general, but, I don't think I can get his character quite right.
