Title: Favorite Character?
Description: Who do you like to write about?
Aural Vampire - June 14, 2008 04:03 PM (GMT)
Do any of you guys have a favorite subject in your writings? Do you really like exploring the possibilities for just one or two characters? Is it easier to sit down and write about one character than it is to write about others?
Haha, I got to thinking about this when I realized I haven't really repeated characters (at least not in the same way) in any of my drabbles. I'm not sure if that's normal or not. XD

Hmm... well currently I'm in the process of writing a story focused on Coricopat and Bombalurina. I love writing about Cori because not much is known about him, so there's a lot of room for the author to use creative license. And I love writing about Bombalurina because she's pretty two-dimensional in the show (she's basically just a sex kitten for most of it), and I like adding that third dimension.
Those are probably my two favorite characters to write about, but I also love writing about Alonzo, Tantomile, and a few others. Hell, I like all of them ;)
Cassandra - June 14, 2008 06:23 PM (GMT)
It's fairly easy to tell from my fics.
Tantomile is one of the two Jellicles I can relate most with, and I feel I have a good grip on her character. It really helps that I am a twin and a practicing witch.
But I also like to write Cassandra, Alonzo, and Bombalurina. Though I disagree that Bombalurina's two-dimensional in the show (I'll admit that most of that bias is based on the video and fourth US tour though). I'll also write Etcetera, Macavity, and Jemima, but under very specific circumstances. :ph43r:
It's actually easier for me to explain which characters I don't write about, and why.
Alex0821 - June 14, 2008 06:26 PM (GMT)
I think the reason I think Bombalurina is two-dimensional in the show is because, in the production of CATS that I was in, our director (who was in CATS on Broadway for several years) told the girl playing Bombalurina that she was supposed to be extremely sexual, and not much else (except for, say, during Grizabella, when she sings with Demeter at the end). So, I guess since that was what someone who was in the Broadway show said about her, that's what I came to believe. But again, I prefer her to be more three-dimensional, which is why I like writing for her.
I also like to write for Cassandra and Exotica (I write them as sisters), because I enjoy exploring their relationship.
And feel free to share who you don't like writing about and why! I think that would be very interesting to read about.

Well in the fourth tour, Bombalurina took on a sort of sentinel-esque, more motherly role (which she does maintain in the fifth tour by taking charge of Sillabub when she acts up), as well as that of "sex kitten" and that three-dimensionality really hooked me. She jumped in to fight Macavity after Munkustrap and Alonzo, at least the day I saw the show. I've never seen another Bombalurina do that, but I liked to see the loyal, protective side of her that so often gets lost (when the sex aspect comes to the fore).
Who I don't like to write about? Maybe I'll start a thread for that so this one doesn't get totally derailed.

Actually, I haven't thought about this much...
My recent drabbles are the first bits of fanfiction from CATS that I've written in almost five years. I have only otherwise written bits and pieces of other stories that have gotten nowhere. Those bits and pieces, however, are mostly about Tumblebrutus, Pouncival, Plato and Admetus. I'm not sure why I've tended to prefer those characters... I know my fondness of Pouncival was rekindled when I too worked with someone who had been in CATS on Broadway -in fact, he was in the original Broadway cast!- and played Pouncival. He was such an awesome guy and helped me so much with my performance skills, it really stirred up my old passion for CATS that I'd sort of set aside.
Otherwise, I just don't know...
Alex0821 - June 14, 2008 08:22 PM (GMT)
That's a very interesting take on Bombalurina; I think I saw the fourth tour (it was about one and a half years ago, I think?) but I don't remember seeing her do all that - I wish I had!
I love those toms! I enjoy reading/writing about them because their personalities aren't so set in stone yet (because they don't get much stage time). I had a slash fic in the works that had an Alonzo-Admetus pairing, which I think I'll start over this summer (I wrote the first chapter a long time ago, and my writing's improved since then so I think I'll just start it from scratch).
And yes, we should definitely have a thread about characters we'd prefer NOT to read/write about *coughTuggerxMistocough*
Cassandra - June 14, 2008 09:35 PM (GMT)
 The fourth tour closed in 1999 or 2000 (I caught it at the tail end of its run, in Milwaukee, WI in May of 1999). What you saw was the fifth tour, aka Troika Tour, Alex. That one started up in 2001 and is still running to this day. <_< In fact, a very lucky friend of mine just saw it in San Diego last weekend, though he was kind enough to buy me a shirt and a Bombalurina magnet and send along a playbill (I'm a cheapskate and, aside from brochures and albums, generally won't buy merchandise at shows). :D

Luuuckyyyyy Cassandra!
I remember way back in the day I used to love writing about Demeter. But now she seems so, I guess, overdone to me that I just don't like it as much now. Unless I'm doing something really different with her, like in fester love.
Something else:
Do you like to read about the same characters you like to write about?
Eminems - June 18, 2008 09:31 PM (GMT)
It's plain from my fanfics that I have a very small number of characters that I tend to write about - Alonzo, Macavity and Munkustrap. Although my latest secret project (whenever I find time to continue work on it) focuses on some other characters. I do feature others on occasion, and I could write Bombalurina, Demeter, and a few others.
I do like to read fanfics featuring the characters I like to write about, but I like to read, so I wouldn't say I prefer them over others. If that makes sense.
(Also, Hello! Life is crazy, but I am still alive. Mostly. )

I think I know what you mean. I have my favorite characters, but I enjoy reading about everyone fairly equally.
XD And it's nice to hear from you from time to time so we know you're still in the land of the living.

Not often, no. Mainly because of the way authors tend to treat Tantomile, Cassandra, and Bombalurina... and Etcetera, too, now that I think about it. I think I actually read more about Victoria, Jemima, Demeter, and Munkustrap (and to a lesser extent Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer) than I do about most of my favorites, because they seem to get less of the cardboard-cutout treatment.
Though I must confess that I read every story I can find about Bombalurina, even if I can tell from the summary that it's going to be awful. Sometimes I'm a sucker for punishment (heaven knows I'm even worse about that in the other fandom I participate in...) and I just can't help myself.
Alex0821 - June 22, 2008 12:50 AM (GMT)
I usually don't read about the characters I write about (at least, not to the same extent), simply because I like the way I portray them more than how others portray them XD.
However, like Cassandra with Bombalurina, I'll read basically any fic with Alonzo in it, even if it looks like it's going to be pretty bad, just because I love him <3. Same goes with Coricopat, Admetus, and a few others.
Apollinian Artist - June 22, 2008 03:29 AM (GMT)
Yea, that's the way I am with Pouncival and Tumblebrutus. If their names are in the summaries, I just have to take a look. Plato I sometimes specifically avoid reading about because he tends to get dumped with the not so bright character type, but I don't always mind it too much. Seriously, though, in almost every story I've read with him in it have had him either really dumb or really mean. Or paired with Victoria, which in my mind is equally jarring. :P
Aural Vampire - June 22, 2008 05:38 AM (GMT)
I feel so strange. XD I read anything that's handed to me, if I've got the time to read it. I wonder why that is? I used to gravitate toward stories about Demeter and Munkustrap, but now it's all kind of the same to me and I don't care who I'm reading about as long as it's well done and fun to read.
Apollinian Artist - June 22, 2008 04:34 PM (GMT)
I suppose you're just very open-minded and not as persnickety as most readers. B)
Alex0821 - June 22, 2008 05:20 PM (GMT)
I wish I was like that... but there are some pairings that I'm just so sick of that I can't read a fanfic about them regardless of how well-written it is.
Rubidia - July 20, 2008 09:48 PM (GMT)
Sorry, this post was an accident!
Rubidia - July 20, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
Well, it's hard to say who my fave characters to write about are. I'll pretty much write about anyone who I come up with a good story for. But who I like to read about is quite different. If the story is good enough, I'll probably read it, but otherwise, I'm a sucker for the Demunku fics. I also really like the Jemima ones. I'd love to get a good fic about Etcetera, because she's my 2nd fave character (Jemima's my 1st). But there aren't that many Etcetera fics out there. And the few that do exist, she's ususally either really obnoxious, acting like a whiney two year old, or is a complete phsyco path bent on getting Tugger, and willing to destroy anything or anyone who gets in the way of the two of them. <_< Annoying. There's a few good Jemima fics out there, but those are usually angsty and depressing. Not that I don't enjoy angsty fics, don't get me wrong, I love em, but couldn't Jemima ever just be happy?!
Cassandra - July 20, 2008 11:47 PM (GMT)
It's so much more fun to torture Jemima than to let her be happy! (Says the Jemima/Macavity shipper.)
I agree that there needs to be good Etceterafic. She's always been my favorite of the kittens.
Aural Vampire - July 21, 2008 12:24 AM (GMT)
A lot of the kittens don't get the development that their small parts in the show leave open for us. Which is a real shame, because some of them, like Etcetera, have a lot of room for growth and interesting stories.
Rubidia - July 23, 2008 01:30 AM (GMT)
I agree. They have such potential, and no one embraces it! I'll have to do a good kitten fic sometime!
Cassandra - July 23, 2008 01:38 AM (GMT)
Perhaps I ought to resurrect that Etceterafic I was working on years ago and see if I can actually do something with it.
Rubidia - July 23, 2008 01:51 AM (GMT)
Please do! I'd love to read it!

That "forgotten" one, or am I thinking of something completely different?
Cassandra - July 24, 2008 01:57 AM (GMT)
Yes, you're thinking of the right one. I have the whole story in my head, I've just been too lazy to rewrite the beginning and finish the story for the past, oh... four years.
