Title: Point of View
Aural Vampire - April 1, 2008 04:42 PM (GMT)
What's your favorite POV? Both in what you write and what you read.
XD I'm bored and curious, and this board needs to get a bit more active.
Personally, I like focused third person. It's more enjoyable to read, I think, because we don't have to "listen" to all of the characters thoughts. It's hard for me to enjoy first person fics most of the time, because the writing has to be absolutely in character or it's automatically bad.
Anyone else?

I agree in that focused third person point of view is my favorite to read, but I do often enjoy writing in first person. I'll have to think about exactly why and maybe get back to you later.

I like third person, both focussed and oniscient, and that's what I usually write as well but I do like using first person now and again.
(Side note: Apologies for the lack of entries, but my inspiration and ideas have been few and far between at the minute. I'll try to get something for week three.)

:o
Welcome, new person! It's nice to see another face around here.
If you need help with ideas, let me know. Heavyside knows I've got an overabundance of them...

Hi, and lucky you. :P
In saying that, I've literally just started writing something, which might work as an entry for week 3. Or end up as something else entirely. But I'll keep that in mind. ^_^

<_<
She does have too many ideas. The minute I mention I'm stuck on anything and she's thrown ten ideas my way. I don't know how she does it.

^_^ Here's my equation for an abundance of ideas:
Sugar + Caffeine + Late Night = a bajillion ideas!
As far as POV, I really like first person. It creates a strong bond between reader and main character, and consequently gives the writer a lot of control over the readers themselves because any emotion that the character feels will be transferred to readers.

I usually only like to read focused third-person stories. I like to write focused third-person and first-person, but for some reason, I don't like reading first-person stories. I'm not sure why...

I think it's easiest to write in first-person because you've really only got one character to worry about that way. You don't have to juggle everybody's thoughts and feelings as you do in an omniscient third-person pov. And as attila said, it can be easier to communicate with the readers in first-person pov because it's more personal. When the writer says "I," the reader may feel more like they're actually talking to you and have a better connection with the character through whom the writer is speaking.
As for reading in first or third person, I have no real preference. I think a writer can fall flat on his/her face or create a masterpiece in either format without one being persistently better than the other. But I don't know. I guess it just depends on the writer's overall ability to me...
