marilyn - January 29, 2006 08:35 AM (GMT)
haha i always have to go over all the chinese phrases to say during new years, since i speak another asian language, even though we are chinese...makes things so complicated...but new years is the best!
ferreros_girl23 - January 29, 2006 02:23 PM (GMT)
Yeah happy year of the doggie!!! And i just pocketed a sweet $500 from my wonderful parents in those lil' red packets! Love this time of the year...
Daphne-au - January 29, 2006 02:42 PM (GMT)

well done and thank you, Boo and Marionette. I fully understand what you meant. ^_^ The pronounciations are both right, since "goom" is Cantonese and "gong" is standard Chinese.
marilyn, how did you celebrate it, did you make jiaozi there?
yeah, ferreros_girl23, the new year red packets are exciting!
Happy New Year to everyone! It's gonna last for at least 15 days!
by the way, I'm one of the doggies, so I'm in red inside and out, haha, it's so much fun!
JCSam - January 29, 2006 03:49 PM (GMT)

oh i celebrated on new year's eve by going to my grandparents' and seeing all my aunts, uncles, and cousins and having the traditional exchange of red envelopes when everyone scrambles around trying to figure out who they've given to and who they've gotten from, since there are so many people in my family. and then the kids got together and played the one game, where you have the mat with 6 different pics of mostly animals and you bet on them. then i went to my other grandmother's and it was much quiter, but nice.
today was new years for me and first was burning incense for our ancestors. then i went out to the asian mall and met my whole family again and all of my parents' friends. everyone says the usual new years blessings (hope your business goes well, all your wishes come true, good health....the list goes on) and then we see the dragon/ lion dance.
yeah lots of stuff. i think i'm going to the temple up in the mountains tomorrow, since i don't have school :P busy weekend huh?
and thank you everyone for your new years wishes!

*whew* Thanks Shanshan - that was a close call! I guess it does make sense for me to say "Goom" then, since it is Cantonese I'm trying to learn. :flower:

abslutely! For Chinese, 12 years is a round of life. When it comes to your year, it means you have finished a round and starts a new one. That's why people born in the year dress themselves red(the traditional blessed color). ^_^ what about wear a pair of red socks to coorespond with the customs, Lou?
Haha, marilyn, we had almost the same activities, like the incense for ancestors, visiting all the relatives and friends, resaurants, blessings, and red packets! Oh, dear, I like traditions. :flower:

It not only makes sense, Boo, but also exact! Hope you're going well with it and if you have any questions I'm always ready to help! :)

just a tiny difference on the lips, I'm confused sometimes, not to mention you, Marionette:P
But it's exciting to know so many of you speak Chinese!
In Chinese, the pronounciation of the bark of dog "wang" is the same with the word "prosperouse". So wish everyone have a harvest year! And thank you for all your blessings! ^_^

Happy New Year everyone!
I'm not Chinese, but the New Years festivities always sound like so much fun. Have a great time!
