Title: Dutch topic!
Description: if you're interested in learning it?
Christian - December 13, 2005 10:47 PM (GMT)
Since there's quite a lot of Dutch talking in other topics lately *cough*, I thought it would be a nice idea to start a Dutch topic for Dutch speaking persons, and persons trying to learn our beautiful language! Have you got a question about the language, or are you just trying to learn it for a bit, this is the right place! Now, to get this topic started: Do you know any Dutch sentences/words? :) Tell tell!
Voor de Nederlandssprekenden: hier hoef je dus even ni in het Engels te kletsen, maar mag het ook gewoon in het Nederlands. Goed idee of ni? :unsure:
tennisrocks - December 13, 2005 11:32 PM (GMT)
okay, I'm trying to figure out what you said...something about speaking dutch...even though you speak english in the netherlands...um...maybe?

That has 20 letters. WTF?!?!?!
carole - December 14, 2005 11:36 AM (GMT)
LOL Trace. I don't think "Nederlandssprekenden" is a correct word though, it means "those who speak dutch", I guess it's something like "Nederlands sprekenden" of "Nederlands-sprekenden" or so. But then again I'm not sure. I'm confused by my own mother tongue!
//EDIT// It is a correct word on Office Word though. Hoeray for Dutch words with 20 letters! (aka "Hoera voor Nederlandse woorden met 20 letters!") The online Van Dale dictionnary couldnt find it though.
Some basic grammar:
to be - zijn :)
I am - ik ben
you are - jij/je bent
he is - hij is
she is - zij/ze is
we are - wij/we zijn
you are - jullie zijn
they are - zij/ze zijn
e.g. "jullie zijn idioot " :lol:
JK, "jullie zijn fantastisch"

Lol no, I said something like.. 'For the Dutch speaking persons, no need to talk in English here, it's allowed to talk Dutch. Good idea or not?'

Christian, well I wish I spoken 3 langus, in fact I only learned 3 ones: English as my major, French as a must for English majors, and Chinese which is the hardest one although as my mother langue ;)
I think what's important to learn a language is to have the opportunity to use it, like you :)
um... it seems that there are many ijs in Dutch, what's the function of them, are they suffix or sth? :huh:
The feeling of learning things is just fabulous after such a long vocation! :D
Thank you all that teach! :flower:

| Jij/je [??? which one?] |
You can choose, it's both correct ;)
In flandres we say "gij/ge" instead of "jij/je", which is so much better sounding than jij/je, IMO B) "u" is the formel form of jij/je, but in the Netherlands, gij/ge is even more formel than "u", while over here it's like totally informel.
and I was thinking about phonetics too LOL. I can spell phoneticly, but you can't type all the weird characters here :rolleyes:
An alternative method...
Ik as in 'stick'
ben as in 'Big Ben'
Jij = y-è-y
je = y + the "e" as in un unstressed 'the'
gij/ge: most of you can't pronounce that sound so I wont even try lol
bent = same as the english 'bent'
hij = h-è-y
zij = z-è-y
ze = z + "e" as in an unstressed 'the'
is = is (lol is is is)
wij = w-è-y
we = w + 'e' as in an unstressed 'the'
zijn = z-è-y-n
jullie = y + 'u' is in the french 'urgent' + lee
fantastisch = fantastis with short clear french a's
* the blue y's mean you dont really pronounce them, at least we dont in flandres, but 'officially' i think you are supposed to...
In the netherlands, they do, I think.
tennisrocks - December 15, 2005 02:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks Carole! I think that I might just help me! :D
Veer-loves-Juan - December 15, 2005 02:19 PM (GMT)
1 = Één
2 = Twee
3 = Drie
4 = Vier
5 = Vijf
6 = Zes
7 = Zeven
8 = Acht
9 = Negen
10 = Tien
Hello = Hallo
Bye = Doei
How are you? = Hoe is het?
Daphne-au - December 15, 2005 02:26 PM (GMT)

Hmmm. So now we have the numbers, but how do you say "I am .... years old"
Is it like in English where then it would be "Ik ben acht" etc etc... or is it like french and spanish when you say "I have....years"???
Dank u voor uw hulp!!
Jc's Guapetona - December 15, 2005 09:22 PM (GMT)
I will go to the most wonderful tournament of the year, the Rotterdam open = Ik ga naar het allerleukste toernooi van het jaar, de Rotterdam Open.
Very important that you can say that :P
Christian - December 15, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
Oh wow Sam, lol! The first one is correct, 'ik ben acht (jaar)' ('I am eight (years)'). It's 'ik ben zeventien (jaar)' in your case though!
Marionette - December 16, 2005 07:20 AM (GMT)
Oh god. So many Dutch speaking people. So much pronunciation. Erhghhhh...
Oh Shaar/Carole/Anne/Veer/Everyone else whose name I don't know, what's fourteen? Hehehe.

carole - December 16, 2005 12:19 PM (GMT)
Tracey, personally I think "Ik ben een baby" is more suitable in your situation ;) Or "Ik ben de baby van het forum" or something :rolleyes:

:D This is fun! I'm learning more now! Though it's probably not the best to go about it, I'd rather learn how to read and write in Dutch first then how to pronounce it! :P

Christian - December 17, 2005 11:05 AM (GMT)
More lessons.. :)
There are two words meaning 'the' in Dutch: 'de' and 'het'. It might be interesting to know that masculine and feminine words have 'de' and neuter(?) words have 'het', but that doesn't always help you that much, because in most cases there's no way of telling whether a word is masculine, feminine or neuter. Only for people and animals it is clear, like:
- de man (- the man)
- de vrouw (- the women)
- het kind (- the child)
There's only one word for 'a' or 'an': 'een'. For example:
- een man (- a man)
- een dier (- an animal)
This and that in Dutch translate as follows:
- For 'de' words this/these is 'deze' and that/those is 'die'
- For 'het' words this/these is 'dit' and that/those is 'dat'
Further, 'over here' is 'hier', and 'over there' is 'daar'.
Question words can be confusing: the Dutch word hoe, sounds like the English 'who', but means 'how, while the Dutch word wie, meaning 'who', sounds like the English 'we', which is 'wij' in Dutch and that sounds more or less like 'why', but that's 'waarom' in Dutch. Quite confusing, eh?
Some question words:
who = wie
what = wat
where = waar
why = waarom
how = hoe
Enough for today! :P

Um.... Um.... WHAT? I'm so confused. Man this is confusing. Why is Dutch so hard? :P

like a trick question :o ...but interesting!

Ik woon niet in de VSA, en je woont niet in de China.

Christian - December 17, 2005 02:42 PM (GMT)
LOL Daphne! Almost correct, nice try though!
Daar is een dier en het kind hou dit (what are you trying to say? :) doesn't make sense here..)
Ik woon niet in de VSA (I guess that's Belgian? In NL, we just say VS), en je woont niet in de (no need for de) China.
Goed gedaan! (Well done)
Daphne-au - December 18, 2005 03:44 PM (GMT)
