25 Days of Daytona

Day 1 - Jan 27, 2005

My name is Rockin’ Scotty and I’m a NASCAR rookie preparing for my first Daytona 500 race. I truly can’t believe I might actually be driving in this race, I still have to pinch myself. On top of this, I’m attempting the unlikely double duty of documenting my next twenty-five days right up until the very moment I slide my nervous butt into the race car on race day. (I should alter that somewhat as I’m attempting to get into this race). Daytona is the only track that takes a page from old school racing where you have to actually qualify in a heat race to get into the main event.

What you can expect from me is the complete and uncensored inside scoop of my journey. This is more than a day in the life, there will be no week to wait for the next episode, no tribal meetings and no one is getting 'voted off' my one man island. You get to live each day as I live them and feel what its like to be a NASCAR driver, what it takes to succeed against the top level of competition and live the ultimate dream of every boy, man, adventurous woman, and every race car driver that’s walked this earth. That would be racing in the Daytona 500. You’ll feel my excitement, my joy, my pain, my aggravation and come to respect my commitment to the sport. By the time our journey has concluded, you will never look upon NASCAR or its drivers in the same light. For anyone with even one ounce of passion, a completely new found respect awaits you. Let me take you to the river…”Can I get an Amen brother”?

Day 16 - Friday 11, 2005

I woke and stepped outside the trailer and I thought my eyes were deceiving me. The track was telling me I was in Daytona but my mind was humming a different tune. Geez', I really need to get Jim Neighbors out of my head. In the sunlight I could finally see all the changes everyone was talking about. Lake Lloyd was reduced by one-third its original size. There was new pavement everywhere, complete with electric and water hookups for the RV’s, no wonder the noise struck me so last night. I read a couple stories about guys testing here last month that had been lost for up to an hour trying to find the new garage area and now it became perfectly clear as to why. Have you ever driven down the same road for many years of your life and one day a new stop sign, speed bump, or traffic circle is installed? You see it, your eyes tell you it’s there but that very first time your mind and body try to ignore it. That’s the feeling I was having only magnified tenfold because of the massive infield renovations that had taken place They completely leveled the old garage area and made a new one modeled after the old one. There is a big glass wall for the fans to view the action in the garage area called the fan zone and curtains for the drivers to have some privacy if needed. A four story...........
