Petey Shepherd Posts Another Top-Ten

(Bowmanville, Ontario) – Petey Shepherd and his Team ATTO / Performance Racing News Dodge had a couple of weeks off following the Western swing of the 2004 CASCAR Super Series season and returned to action last Saturday, August 23rd at Mosport Speedway. The 200-lap feature at ‘Canada’s Fastest ½-mile’ was the first of four straight oval track races in five weeks to close the season, as Shepherd continued to battle J.R. Fitzpatrick and Rob Graham for the National Rookie-of-the-Year title. Shepherd had a number of Late Model starts at the track, and was very impressed with the improvements that had been made on the track. “They did some paving. There used to be a lot more bumps, but they took some of those out and it’s made for a better racing surface.”

Shepherd was 10th-fastest in practice for the Mosport 200 and backed it up with a solid eighth-place qualifying effort. “We were happy with that result. That should give us a good starting spot for the feature.”

Petey rolled off from the outside of row four, but his night would get rocky right off the bat. “I think Kerry Micks blew an oil line and we got into the fluid and spun out.” Luckily for the # 50 machine there was no damage to the Dodge and Shepherd was able to rejoin the field at the back. “We gave up a good starting spot with that, but at least the car was all right. We basically started the race from the back of the field.”
Shepherd got hooked up with Fitzpatrick early in the race and the pair made their way through the field together, as Petey advanced to 13th while the race reached the halfway point. Under a yellow flag almost the entire field made wholesale pit stops, but Team ATTO had a little hiccup as the socket came off the impact gun. Another gun was quickly brought into service, but Shepherd had lost a few spots.
He returned to action and started to wade through traffic again, once more hooking up with Fitzpatrick as the pair navigated through the pack. By the time the checkered flag fell Shepherd had recorded another solid top-ten finish, winding up seventh. “We had some good luck and some bad luck. We had bad luck when we spun out early, but we also got some good luck on one of the yellows when the caution flag flew while Don Thomson Jr. was coming up to lap us. We had a solid outing, and I think we had a top-five or top-three car, but we weren’t in the same league as Donnie.”

Thomson, and David Whitlock qualified on the front row for the Mosport 200, with Thomson grabbing the lead when the green came out. Thomson would lead until lap 96 when he pitted for tires, but re-took command on lap 98 and paced the field for the remainder of the event to record his first win in over two years. Mark Dilley held off D.J. Kennington for second position, while the win gave Thomson the point lead as former championship leader Gibbons finished ninth.
1. Thomson, 2. Dilley, 3. Kennington, 4. Whitlock, 5. Jeff Lapcevich, 7. Petey Shepherd.

Unofficial point standings (after nine of 12 events) – 1. Thomson (1550 points), 2. Gibbons (1527), 3. Whitlock (1527), 4. Jeff Lapcevich (1463), 5. Kerry Micks (1450), 11. Petey Shepherd (1272).

The next event for Team ATTO will be Saturday August 28th at ‘Canada’s Fastest 1/3-mile’, Peterborough Speedway. Shepherd had success there earlier in the season as he qualified third, and ran strong all night before bending some suspension late in the contest and fading. “We’re excited about racing at Peterborough. We qualified third there in the spring with just a single lap, and had a solid top-five car. I still think we can get a win before the end of the season, and I think we have as good as shot as anyone when it comes to winning at Peterborough. I grew up racing on small, flat tracks like Flamboro, and with no banking you really have to work the car through the corners. On these high-banked tracks, like Peterborough it’s a lot easier to get through the turns, and then when you hit the straights you realize just how fast you’re going.”
