Youngest Driver to Ever Take a #1 Pole Position In CASCAR History
Career Firsts for Petey Shepherd – First Pole and First Top-Five
(Nelles Corners, Ontario) – Petey Shepherd and his Team ATTO / Performance Racing News Dodge arrived at Cayuga 2000 Speedway last weekend for round five of the 12-event CASCAR Super Series season. Shepherd entered the event, the ATTO 200 Canada Day Shootout, sitting 14th in the championship point’s standings, and second in the Rookie-of-the-Year battle, while looking to move up in both of those standings.
The weekend started off on Saturday July third with practice for the Atto 200 and Shepherd was 10th on the practice sheets with a fastest lap of 21.616 seconds, putting him less then 3/10ths of a second off the fastest time. Shepherd explained, “We’re real pleased with the car today and I think we’re in good shape for qualifying. At least we’re not scrambling on it this time.” Shepherd was referring to the team’s first trip to Cayuga this season when the crew spent all day on the Saturday thrashing on the car to get it better. On this day they were all sitting on lawn chairs in the pit stall eating lunch, very calmly.
When qualifying came Shepherd rolled out early in the session and set the mark. He turned the 5/8th-mile track in 21.404 seconds, picking up over 2/10ths of a second from his practice time. The number left him first overall, and it would stand up through the entire session for his first career pole. This Qualifying Pole Position time put Young Petey Shepherd in the record books as the Youngest CASCAR Driver to ever earn a #1 Pole Position. “This is awesome,” explained Petey. “We were able to pick up a little time and are in real good shape for Sunday. This really gives the entire team a boost.”
Shepherd brought the field to the green flag for the 200-lap journey around Cayuga and was able to take control, pacing the field for the first 38 laps before Peter Gibbons started applying pressure to him. “Gibbons was faster at that point, so I let him go and fell into line.” Shepherd would slowly slip back a few more spots during the early going, and was running third with just 50 laps on the board. He was still running third when the races sixth yellow appeared on lap 70. Shepherd lost one spot shortly after that restart and then became engaged in a battle with Doug Brown. The pair ran together for the next 75 laps until the races final yellow flew with just 20 laps to go, but they were both lapped just before the caution flew at the end of that long green flag run. “Doug and I had a blast racing like that for 70 or so laps. It was so hot out. I told the guys that I wasn’t going to say much on the radio, because I was saving my energy. But, despite it being that hot, Doug and I were able to push each other. If we weren’t together we both probably would have dropped off and got lapped earlier.”
By the time the yellow came out on lap 180 Shepherd was ready for a pit stop, “The cords were showing on the right rear, that’s how beat up our tire was.” The crew ripped off a stop to change the right rear and returned the ATTO machine to competition. Shepherd came out of the pits in fifth, and finished in that position, recording the team’s first top-five result. “This is an incredible run for our team, and an incredible weekend after sitting on the pole. I’m so proud of all my guys, and it just makes us look forward to next weekend’s race that much more.” The finish was also enough to move Shepherd back in front in the Rookie-of-the-Year competition by 15 points over Rob Graham.
Gibbons would lead 100-plus green flag laps before the events final caution flag flew with 15 laps to go. The only three cars left on the lead lap would come to pit road. Kerry Micks took the lead off pit road, while Gibbons was penalized for speeding. On the restart with five laps to go David Whitlock was able to make a pass for the lead and hold on to win his first race of the season with Micks second, and Gibbons third.
1. Whitlock, 2. Micks, 3. Gibbons, 4. Don Thomson Jr., 5. Petey Shepherd.
Official Point Standings (after five of 12 events) – 1. Gibbons (804 points), 2. Whitlock (779), 3. Thomson (759), 4. Micks (730), 5. Jeff Lapcevich (703), 10. Petey Shepherd (624).
The next event for Petey Shepherd and Team ATTO will be this weekend at the Toronto Molson Indy, and Shepherd will be looking to back up his solid finish from Canada Day on the tricky street course. “We’re looking forward to a big weekend. It’s a very important race to us, because that is ATTO’s biggest market. We’re more comfortable on road courses after Mosport. Now, I just need to pick up an Indy Car game for the computer and learn the track.
