Petey Shepherd Qualifies Third at Peterborough !
(Peterborough, Ontario) – Saturday, June 12th, the CASCAR Super Series headed East of Toronto for the first time this season, as Petey Shepherd and his Team ATTO / Performance Racing News Dodge took to Peterborough Speedway. ‘Canada’s Fastest 1/3rd-mile’ played host to the Dodge Dealers of Ontario 200, stop three of the 12-race tour for Canada’s most talented stock car drivers.
The day started off with a two-hour practice session, and Shepherd was among the leaders throughout the afternoon.
Qualifying was next, and Shepherd blitzed ‘the action track’, turning the third fastest lap with a time of 14.453 seconds. “We had a little problem with tech before our run,” explained the third generation pilot. “The car was a fraction of an inch too low, and because of that we only got one lap, as opposed to the two that others received. I think if we had’ve had that second lap we could have had a shot at the pole.” Their time was just .045 seconds off the pole sitters lap.
With the sun setting, the green came out for the 200-lap main event, and Petey quickly looked for a place to tuck into line. He found that hole in fourth position. Things were going smoothly for the first 20 laps as Petey tried to stay in front of Peter Gibbons, but Gibbons became impatient and hit Shepherd coming out of turn two, sending him for a ride in the grass. “That is something I’ve been fighting with all year – in fact all of the rookies have been – we have to earn the respect of the veterans.” In a tremendous display of skill, Petey kept the # 50 machine from hitting anything and returned to the track, staying on the lead lap. Shepherd continued in 14th, and a mere 20 laps later had worked his way back into the top-ten.
The Team ATTO pit crew would be pressed into action on lap 67, as under yellow, while at the back of the pack, Shepherd came to the attention of his crew for service. The race went back to green, but just 20 laps later the night would take a turn to the worse. While working through turn one another car hit the Team ATTO Dodge and broke the left front tie rod. Petey limped the car to pit road, and the crew addressed the problem, returning him to the track, though a number of laps down. Shepherd stayed up on the wheel for the rest of the night, and passed a number of top cars, bringing his mount home with a 17th-place finish. “The guys did a great job getting the front end close to where it was before, and the car was still fast. We ran awesome again today, we just didn’t get the result we were looking for.”
Teammates David Whitlock and Mark Dilley sat on the front row, with Dilley jumping into the lead. Whitlock took command on lap 77, with Don Thomson Jr. waiting in the wings. The trio would battle among themselves for the front three positions, but when Whitlock slipped up on lap 147, Dilley capitalized, moving to the front. He held off all challenges from both Whitlock and Thomson over the remaining 53 laps to claim his first feature win since 2000. Kerry Micks claimed third from Thomson late in the event and joined the pair on the podium.
1. Dilley, 2. Whitlock, 3. Micks, 4. Scott Steckly, 5. Peter Gibbons, 17. Petey Shepherd.
Point Standings (after three of 12 events) 1. Gibbons (481 points), 2. Whitlock (474), 3. Thomson (448), 4. Micks (430), 5. Ron Beauchamp Jr. (418), 17. Petey Shepherd (345).
The next event for Petey Shepherd and Team ATTO will be this weekend at the world renowned Mosport Raceway. The demanding road course will feature a test of both man and machine as they snake their way through the hills North of Bowmanville. The weekend will get underway with qualifying on Saturday afternoon to set the grid for Sunday’s main event. “We’re excited about next weekend,” Shepherd explained. “That is the track where we made our first CASCAR start last year, and this year I have already been out there once in a Formula car. We’re also planning on getting some laps in on Friday in preparation for the weekend, and I think we’re going to get a little racing luck and have a solid run.”
The weekend will also feature round two of the Carquest Sportsman Series on Saturday night at the ½-mile Mosport oval.
