Title: Spells
Description: Question about them.

Is it okay to make up the incantations for spells? (unless they're in the books of course)

I study Latin at school, so I would be able to develop them pretty easily (never got below an 'A' in the subject.......pity about my Maths grades really)

Yeah that's a pretty good question, I study Latin as well. So I'm knowlegdable in the way to make up an incantation too. I never thought to ask if we could though.. haha

Ah...probably you could, but don't go over board. And try to keep them Harry Potterish. Not perfect latin, in other words. And NO MARY SUEING with the spells. Indicate exctely what they do at the bottom of the post and keep it reasonable.

Though I'm just guessing at what some good guidelines would probably be. I'd wait for Bree's word before doing anything.

Another question I have about spells:

When it comes to using them against other players, either in an official duel or in a fight, are there any rules or guidelines one must follow? I've had a quick look of the site and haven't been able to find any.

Replies would be much appreciated

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to thank you for your reply Dracona. Thanks

I'm not entirely sure about specific 'guidelines' would be for Spells .. but all I can say in answer to the above question Joe, is to not 'god-mod' the character. So if you hit them with a spell, you can put in an OOC what it does, but leave it up to the other character for their reaction. Which I'm sure if you've read in the rules plenty of times already, so that's a pretty obvious one.

But as Dracona said, I'd wait for Bree on the final word. ^ ^ ' '

Okay thanks for the response, I'll wait for a reply from Prof. Breena

And here it is...

1. Making up spells: This is fine, as long as you do as Dracona said: don't Mary Sue/Gary Stu them. Consider the age and academic year level of your character when coming up with them, and be sure it's something appropriate for the level of skill that they should have at said age/year. And remember, Harry and Hermione are exceptional when it comes to their level of skill, because Harry has some of Voldy's power, and Hermione studies/practices her arse off for what she's got.

2. "Dueling": Acacia was a little off, but had the right general idea.

-- Person Casting the Spell: You would be god-moding to say that the spell hits the other person, let alone stating the details of how it affects them personally. Deciding that it was a successful hit for yourself takes away the free will of the other character, when they could have ducked or blocked it.

-- Person Receiving the Spell: You would be Mary Sue-ing to say that you miraculously manage to dodge/duck/block all of the spells flung at you. You have to take some hits. Yes, you are allowed to dodge/block/duck some, but you can't win 'em all.

Either way, BE REALISTIC about it. In fact, you should be as realistic in this type of magical setting as you possibly can with everything. It's Harry Potter, not high fantasy.

Hope that clarifies! ^^

Okay, the rules for duelling were more or less what I expected, thanks for confirming it though
