I used to like DBZ, actually. The Buu saga isn't that good though. I hate how EVERY episode of DBZ is long and drawn out. I wouldn't mind a slower, drawn out episode once in awhile, but they go way overboard.
Hamtaro is probably my current favorite show. It's funny, cute, and has interesting plots. At least I think so.

tigrillo(stan) - April 21, 2003 03:14 AM (GMT)
yup, i'm with you oxnard

Sauce - April 21, 2003 03:18 AM (GMT)
DBZ > Hamtaro, IMO.

They say the REAL Japanese uncut DBZ's are immeasurably better than the Toonami stuff, too.

iggy - April 21, 2003 03:26 AM (GMT)
Both are great shows, but Hamtaro is the only show I watch anymore. Sometimes I just need to see some cute hamsters talk to eachother :kushi:

Alex - April 21, 2003 06:14 PM (GMT)
I used to watch DBZ everyday, but it got old and I got hooked on Hamtaro, Gah.....*drools* Hammm...Hammmmm....

Yeah, I agree that the reruns suck, but everything else you posted is just lousy whining...

I have no idea what's up with the whole Vegeta thing, though. He could blow up Arlla(sp) that fast but he didn't do it to Earth, and then after him no villain could destroy the world even NEAR that fast until Kid Buu, who happened to be the ultimate villain. I bet in the Japanese version they have some sort of logical explanation, like the planet had a bomb planted on it or some such....otherwise, I'm SURE he would have done the same to Earth...

The Videl thing was a little stupid too, but still. I don't think it has crap to do with genes, myself; the reason the kids are so much more strong each generation is because their elders are THAT much stronger by the time new kids come, and can learn that much more. Like how Trunks and Goten could go SSJ by age 7; if they'd been born to normal parents, or even Goku and Vegeta at the end of the Saiyan saga, they wouldn't have. But since both their dads had acheived SSJ Level 2 by the time they were old enough to toddle, they quickly learned from them, I'm sure. Sadly, though, no kids are ever QUITE as strong as their elders. They gain power at a MUCH greater rate, but in the end, Goku and Vegeta are still the strongest in the series. Even Mystic Gohan, the SSJ3+ version of Gohan that the Elder Kai gives him (some speculate that this is somewhat of an equivalent to "super human" since it obviously gave Gohan power WITHOUT the SS recipe) was nowhere near as powerful as SSJ3 Goku when he fought Kid Buu...and SSJ3 Gotenks wasn't even as strong as Mystic Gohan...so pretty much, Pan is VERY strong for her age and could probably wipe everyone but her own family and Buu in one punch, but surely none of them would go hard on her and maybe even let her win. If you watch the scenes at the VERY END of the LAST episode when Goku is flying off with Uub, you can see what LOOKS like Pan beating Gotenks anyway, and the 2 you mentioned; Buu and Vegeta, who are definately the MOST likely to hurt her, I doubt would. You can see that Vegeta gradually becomes more and more good from the Frieza saga to the Buu saga, and by the end, it looks like he's pretty well nice. And Buu surely would never hurt her; he's probably the single character in the show almost as pure-hearted as Goku. He has the mind of a child, anyway.

And the massive descruction ratio is SUPPOSED to be unrealistic and simply exist to get action-obsessed anime watchers excited. As I've said, most aniime have REALLY superhuman events, DBZ just happens to be one of the most extreme ones.

Yeah, I noticed that too. And I think it's ridiculous how one character can decimate an entire planet.

Sauce - April 30, 2003 10:34 AM (GMT)
Hm. Stuff like that's only to get your adrenaline pumped. It's sad that you judge a show for "giving characters too much power" when just about any anime does that anyway, and the IMPORTANT part is the storyline and/or the entertainment you get out of the show (which DBZ strived to deliver in). And like I said, they editted the US version a /lot/, horrendously more than just about any other anime ever americanized, from what I read. Of course, most anime are transformed from serious and/or very "PG-13" material to little kid stuff most the time they're "americanized".

It's true. They turned the Japanese DBZ of nearly adult rating into something ten year olds can watch. It's still an entertaining show either way. The funniest edit by far though has to be when they changed "beer" into "root beer".

Oxnard - April 30, 2003 05:02 PM (GMT)
Sauce, but when the first villain Vegita, can wipe out planets himself(he blew up planet Arla or something, the bug planet), how am I supposed to be impressed by Freiza and Buu, who also have a reputation for blowing up planets?
C'mon, characters that can wipe out galaxies just by pointing their fingers? That's a bit much.
Don't get me wrong; I like fantasy as much as anyone, but DBZ is outlandish. Plus what in the world were Gohan and Videl thinking by letting 4 year old Pan fight in the tournament at the end? Yeah, she can hold her own against normal people, but what about the likes of Buu or Vegita, who know little about restraint. Can we say...child abuse?
And why is it the little kids are always 10000 times stronger than their parents? And don't give me this "genes get stronger with each new generation" garbage. If that were the case, people now should be friggin Superman, because look at how many generations have passed since the beginning of time.
I seriously lost interest in DBZ after the Cell saga. The Buu saga is horrid. I can't believe Toonami keeps playing it over and over. They should get rid of DBZ, now that it's FINALLY finished, and put on something else. Give viewers something else to watch.

Bah, don't look at that part of the post. You have to remember that I use that logic to make weaker people think more lowly of themself and thus deviously give myself an upper hand, but I know you're beyond that, and use the "play" AGAINST me almost every time. Look at the rest of the post, the actual, thick argument.

And I know lots of people hate DBZ, but the stuff YOU were complaining about about it made me angry enough to use the whining comment. You make it sound like some of the BETTER parts of the show, or what universally the creators intended to be "good' with it, are "so unbelievable etc etc" when they're actually INTENDED to be that way....oh, forget it, just read my last post and omit the whining part.

Oxnard - May 3, 2003 12:39 AM (GMT)
Actually, I enjoy fantasy as much as anybody. I hate reality TV. But I just think DBZ carries the fantasy element a bit too far sometimes, almost to the point where it's sickening.
I guess I currently have a love/hate relationship with DBZ. There are things I like about it: The characters, good conquering evil, and martial arts. I guess I was really turned off by the Buu saga. It takes everything that was wrong with DBZ to begin with and magnifies it a 100 fold. However, I do think Uub, Buu's human re-incarnation, is cool. And I liked that episode where Fat Buu learned he had to pay for ice cream. A lot of people say DBZ should've ended immediately after Kid Buu died, but I disagree. I think that would've ruined it. I'm glad we get to see what the earth is like now that things are back to normal...well, normal for the DBZ universe.

Oxnard - May 3, 2003 12:45 AM (GMT)
Another thing I don't like is how potential characters get very little development. I'd like to see more of Goten and Trunks kicking butt. I was really stoked about seeing them in action after seeing them fight in the tournament. I know they fused to fight Skinny Buu, but those episodes were lamely done, like most everything else in the Buu saga. Everyone hates the Garlic Jr. saga, but I live it just because they finally beat someone without any help from Goku.
The episodes I want to see the most are when Gohan beats Cell. I've always been a Gohan fan, well until he made his 4 year old daughter fight in the tournament. But the Cell saga was genuis in that the buildup was perfect, especially in that one episode where Gohan rescues that little girl. At the end, we get a sense of forshadowing that he, not Goku, will be the one to beat Cell when he blows up the shelter and tells everyone "If I can blow it up, then so can Cell. My name is Gohan. something something The bigger they are, the harder they fall." That's genuis. And I love the episodes when he and Goku were in the Hyperbolic Chamber and Gohan realized how he had cowered in the past and how he wanted to redeem himself. Pure genuis buildup. And I like the idea that a kid, who had been a bookworm all this time, will be the one to defeat the seemingly invincible Cell. Pure work of art. Too bad the Buu saga wasn't as good.
But I think the Cell saga is definately when DBZ was at it's peak.

Sauce - May 3, 2003 12:48 AM (GMT)
Funny, but the Buu saga is my favorite. By THIS far in the series, and considering just what Majin Buu is, I'm surprised even YOU have your panties in wad over the fact that he's above-godly strength. And it poses for ONE kick-arse series of fights on the Kai Planet, the very last true battle of DBZ. I think that how Buu was the first enemy to FINALLY truly destroy the planet Earth was absolutely awesome, and the rapid exploding of all the other planets in succesion WAS believable, when you consider how PERFECTLY suited he is for the job.

Yeah, I loved the last few episodes, too, but I STILL don't see how you think the buu saga is so horrible.

tigrillo(stan) - May 3, 2003 12:51 AM (GMT)

Oxnard - May 3, 2003 04:54 AM (GMT)
I haven't seen the Kid Buu episodes, so I can't comment on those. I guess I feel more of the episodes are more time filler than plot buildup. The episodes just don't build up to an inevitable conclusion like in the other sagas. It's like the writers just sporadically jump around from one solution to the next until they finally figure out they have to have the good guys beat Buu somehow.
But in the Cell saga, everything seemed to fit perfectly together. Like I said, there is forshadowing that Gohan will be the hero. With the Buu saga, we have Gohan lose, Supreme Kai lose, Vegita lose, Gotenks lose, Gohan lose again(The whole Z-Sword spiel was a waste IMO. It seemed like a gimmick just to introduce another character, who inconveniently, or rather conveniently, has to perform an insanely long ritual to unleash true powers, which eats up more time), Gotenks lose again, Goku/Vegita then Vegito lose, and that's the last I've seen. There is no pattern. It all seems like gimmicks and time filler. If the fused Vegito couldn't beat Skinny Buu, though I realize they are powerful enough; they just couldn't because of their cocky attitude, then how in the world can Goku and Vegita beat the more powerful Kid Buu? I think at that point, the writers realized they made Buu too powerful, and they had to find a way to somehow end DBZ. He's been blown up and had every piece incinerated by Picollo and Gotenks, yet he revived. Yet Goku manages to blow up every shred of him. Maybe if I would've seen thos episodes, I would understand. But as it is, I'm lost.

I don't question how suitable he is. But how am I supposed to be impressed by a character who can blow up planets, when Vegita and Freiza are capable of the same thing? I presume Cell is too, but we never see him do that.

Oxnard - May 3, 2003 05:00 AM (GMT)
And I realize the bad guy needs to win big battles to show how powerful he is, but I think having two sets of rematches, which fail a second time - Gohan and Gotenks - is a bit much.

iggy - May 3, 2003 05:08 AM (GMT)
Yeah I'm not a Buu saga fan either. It just wasn't nearly as well done as the Cell saga, or the Frieza saga. The Cell saga was great because androids 17 + 18 were the enemies in the beginning but towards the end they had to be considered allies, stuff like that. "Super Vegeta" against Imperfect Cell is my all-time favorite fight.

As for Buu having died from the huge blast, I suppose it was the same as Cell. Every single little particle had to be destroyed in one swift blast or else one shred will remain and regenerate. Every other attempt was unsuccessful and the few shreds left were enough to regenerate, until Goku let out the huge one.

Alex - May 3, 2003 12:57 PM (GMT)
I used to watch plain old Dragonball for kicks and giggles it bored me and I discovered Hamtaro, so it just faded out.

I don't really like DBZ.

Sauce - May 3, 2003 01:30 PM (GMT)
Wow. Who would have guessed. Everyone disagrees with me. And with these kids, it's utterly pointless to make big posts against it. Puh.

Yeah, one thing that REALLLLLLLLLY annoyed me was the whole "if one subatomic particle from the enemy is left, he will completely regenerate". Actually, this was only very bad with Cell. He should have been destroyed, I think, by either Android 16 going kamikaze, or at LEAST by SSJ2 Gohan BEFORE Goku kills himself. Or at LEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST by Goku taking him to King Kai's planet...but no, no, no, he just won't die, and every time he comes back he's STRONGER. Bah, it's so stupid. But Buu never gets stronger; I'm not sure if his strength even dramatically increases at all between any of his forms, he just gets more and more drive for destroying everything and less and less care for anything else as he changes forms. See, SSJ3 Goku held his own against Fat Buu just about as much as he did against Kid Buu, and Vegeta had about the same luck too...and Fat Buu himself was only BARELY weaker than Kid Buu; actually, if Kid Buu didn't regenerate as he did, he would have fallen to Fat Buu. But the point I'm trying to make is that Buu himself was CREATED so deviously perfect in every way for the destruction of the universe, it was uncanny; HIS regeneration was believable. Instead of being really horribly tough and untouchabel by anything unless they're at least 5x as strong as them (like most the other DBZ villains) or whatnot, he was given virtually NO defense, but no matter HOW hard you tried to destroy him, he would come back together. See, Cell grew back completely as long as not every particle was destroyed. Buu's particles never were destroyed; they just got more and more "disturbed" but would come back together every time. I don't think Buu can regenerate at all, just "reform". He was made this was specially by Bibidee for that one maniacal purpose. No one or nothing could even touch him, really and truly, until Goku (with the help of every single living thing on the Kai Planet, Earth, and probably lots of other places) launched the ultimate Spirit Bomb technique, with the will of so many people and the strength of the greatest warrior in the universe backing it up, AND then with the final wish of the Namekian Dragon granting Goku his original power, he was able to utterly obliterate every single molecule that made up Buu absolutely and completely.

But then he re-incarnates, lolz.

Like I said, a lot of people are getting jaded with DBZ. It's not known as "drag on ball Z" for nothing. :hamha:
And I noticed Buu's lack of defense. I also noticed that Fat Buu really isn't a skilled martial artist; he's just really strong. The other villains had strength and technique.

Hmmmm....Yeah I hate how he comes back even if they beat the crap outta him, (Sauce mentioned that).

iggy - May 3, 2003 08:11 PM (GMT)
I don't disrespect you... I thought the Buu saga was entertaining but not quite as good as Cell. It's all a matter of opinion, really. I don't see what we're arguing about.

Yeah it's kind of funny that the huge spirit bomb with every living thing behind it FINALLY destroyed Buu for good! But EVEN THEN he reincarnated so he's still kind of alive. You can't get rid of that guy, even if you do actually beat him.

I won't deny the fact that Buu was indeed the ultimate villain, so perfect that he finally destroyed earth, and many other planets effortlessly. He was tailor-made to do it. It was over-done but still kind of cool.
