Title: Another Fruit Basket
Description: You have found a Fruit Basket virgin!
Maris Redwolf - January 24, 2005 10:01 PM (GMT)
I've never seen Fruit Basket, and I have heard very little about it. So I am a Fruit Basket virgin. Anyone wana give me a quickie on whats it about, main characters, and how good it is? Everyone tells me its good, its awsome, but they fail to mention anything about the show, and/or manga
For the record, I lost my 7/11 slurpy virginity the other day, wasn't all that good, but are first times ever good?
No-Chan-San - January 25, 2005 03:11 AM (GMT)
*blinkety* that's a little weird, Maris.. why hadn't you ever had a slurpee?? O.o
So yeah!! Fruits Basket is AWESOME!! That all you wanted to know? OK.. BYEBYE... ;D
Basically, it's hard to tell you anything about the show without spoiling it a little for you, so I hope you don't mind..
There's a girl named Tohru, and she is living alone, in a tent, in the woods. Her mother has passed away, and she couldn't live with her Grandfather any longer, you see.. Anyway, She is walking to school one day, and comes across this house, and on the steps are these cute little painted rocks, painted to be all the animals of the chinese zodiac. (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Sheep, Rooster, Dog, Boar, Monkey, Snake, and Rabbit).. She stops to admire them, and a man (Shigure) comes out of the house and starts to talk to her.. Then it turns out that a guy she goes to school with, Yuki "The Prince", also lives at that house and they walk to school together... Later that evening, the two find out that she's living in THEIR woods, and invite her to come live at their place, if she'll clean and cook. Then another guy, Kyo, shows up and challenges Yuki to a fight, and when Tohru tries to stop the fight, all hell breaks loose. She trips and grabs Kyo, who turns into a cat, and then runs into Yuki and Shigure while freaking out about that, and they turn into a Rat and a Dog. It turns out that the 3 are part of 13 relatives (cousins, siblings, you name it) who are cursed to turn into animals of the zodiac when they 'embrace' a member of the opposite sex. Why the cat? Because the cat is cool.. well, that and the cat was the one the rat tricked into sleeping an extra day so he missed the party that the God planned in the legend...
So after that, it's basically a show about their lives, with much humor, sadness, happiness, friendship, love, more humor, a little bit of fighting, MAN's ROMANCE!, and just a general all around GOOD feeling! It truly is an awesome series. The TV show is 26 episodes, and the manga is up to about book 16 and still running in the Hana to Yume, a japanese older teen girl manga magazine.
It's definitely worth watching. One of the best series yet. ;)
Kago - January 25, 2005 04:25 AM (GMT)
Question: Don't we already have a Fruba thread containing most of, if not all of, the vital information regarding this most wonderful of series?
And just outta curiousity, too what flavor of slurpee did you lose your slurginity (sounds dirty don't it)?

I'm not a big fan of Fan-fics too begin with, so I can't help you there. And Rozen Maiden is rather new and not very well known, so I doubt that there will be very many fan-fics out for it at the moment. Of course, I could be wrong...

Selphie Tivrusky 5 - February 23, 2006 03:56 AM (GMT)
hee hee a subject I'm totally addicted to
Fruits Basket is my FAVORITE
I found out about it's existence when the 2nd book
came out over here in the good ole US of A
I've bought up to book.... 14 now
I have all the DVDs, they are fantabulous
they make me laugh, they make me cry, all literally
it was actually the second anime I had ever purchased
(rurouni kenshin came first)
Mishi - February 23, 2006 07:25 AM (GMT)
O_O I saw a few episodes of Fruits Basket fairly recently. Some parts are very funny, but the angst struck me as contrived and the character designs looked bland and in some cases freakish to me.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - February 25, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
that's totally how I felt in the beginning, but
you just can't help looking at Kyo in book 12 and
realize... my god, he's so hot now that he's older
I really just fell in love with how I could
fall right into the story line and stay there
I guess it's just one of those things you
get addicted to even if no one else likes it
(but many other people do like it,
so I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to prove)
Mishi - February 26, 2006 08:59 PM (GMT)
I rather like Ritsu. He's exhausting, but if he just straightened out some issues he would be a handsome boy and a very nice catch.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - February 28, 2006 01:19 PM (GMT)
yeah, if he just cut his hair >_<
(I don't like long-haired gu.ys)
but I totally love his sincerity
other than Kyo,
my favorite character is Hatori
he's just so... awesome.
Mishi - February 28, 2006 06:15 PM (GMT)
Awwww... I like long hair. Which is funny because only one of my top 6 has long hair. I draw long hair a lot.
Ritsu just needs to stop blaming himself for the lack of air in space. And demeaning himself. The funny thing is, there's a very sedate inside a lot of people I've met, including myself.
I feel inadequate a lot of the time, and I wonder whether I'll ever amount to anything. What Ritsu's going through would be fairly normal if he didn't take it to such an extreme.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 1, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
yeah, like Kotaro in Pita-Ten
Ritsu is the extreme of eveyone's self-doubt
he plays an important role in everyone's life
Tohru helps us realize that we may feel
that way about ourselves, but we really do
matter to someone
I feel self-doubt all the time because
I don't ever know what I'm doing with my life
my hardest decisions in life are making decisions
I am the most indecisive person I know
I don't mean to be, but when it comes
to life choices.... I always am hanging back
but it's not that I don't like Ritsu, it's just
that I feel more close to other characters in Furuba
that's why I don't usually say anything about him
Mishi - March 1, 2006 04:24 AM (GMT)
Tohru annoys me, especially in the episode with the sheep-kid. The sheep-kid was being so unpleasant to her and she didn't even *try* to fight back. She just sat back and took it. How can anyone sit there and take abuse without even trying to protect themselves from it? That's inhuman. She barely even seemed upset.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 2, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
wow!
I think that Tohru is the ONLY girl that I like in anime
I admire Tohru soooo freaking much
I even admire her in the whole Hiro thing
she can be so kind even when people are being an a** to them
sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this
(to some level, I would have socked that kid)
Mishi - March 2, 2006 02:43 AM (GMT)
Takes all kinds. Personally, I look at half the characters in Fruits Basket and I say: "WHAT is he/she WEARING??!!" Like the dress Ayame's assistant dragged Tohru into in that one episode... It was so ugly and poofy. I didn't think it suited Tohru at all.
Or the bunny. What sane boy dresses up in such girly clothes?! XD. I mean, Ayame and Ritsu, they're crossdressers. I get that, but the bunny doesn't have that excuse.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 2, 2006 03:41 AM (GMT)
XDD lol
that is totally something I can agree on
I thought that "men's romance" dress on Tohru was HIDEOUS
and some of the things that they are dressed up in
are hilarious, sad, or
"oooh, poor baby, you're mother forced you to wear that, right?"
I like a few of their outfits though
and yeah, Momiji is soooo adorable
he would totally be on my bishy list
if he wore more manly clothing
Mishi - March 2, 2006 10:41 PM (GMT)
I totally love the part where Hatsuharu tells the student council flunkies to wait until Momiji gets bigger to force a male uniform on him... the lustful fantasies they have...
Maybe it's just me, but for some reason I have an excruciatingly hard time thinking of Kyo and Yuuki as two seperate people. I KNOW they hate eachother, intellectually I can tell the differences very, very easily. But somehow I get the feeling there's only one man courting Tohru.
Perhaps it's because they never outright fight for her. Sure, when Tohru goes somewhere with one, the other immediately says he's going too, but they never fight for the right to go somewhere alone with her.
And when somethings happening with Tohru, they always react in the same way, or at the same time.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 3, 2006 02:06 AM (GMT)
that is true
they never literally fight
but they are always fighting for her
and I find it almost impossible to see them
any other way than as two people
probably because I like Kyo so much
and I really... just don't like Yuki
also the lustful fantasies
remember the whole thinking about Yuki in girl's clothes, ne?
Mishi - March 3, 2006 02:21 AM (GMT)
Damn, that's messed up. I mean, I think Yuuki is so unnattractive... At least physically. He doesn't strike me as anyone particularly interesting.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 3, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
yeah, Yuki has the same body as Kyo
but that's simply the drawing style
it's just the way Yuki holds himself
and ... his hair
he has that one part of his hair
that is longer, what's up with that?
I'm sorry, it's just a small thing
but it really bothers me,
why can't he just get a normal haircut?
Mishi - March 3, 2006 06:11 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't mind it so much if he were a girl. An anime character has no right being that effeminate unless he's actually a crossdresser. XD.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 4, 2006 01:36 AM (GMT)
at my friends school
she's the president of the Kyo club
and she totally hates Yuki
everyone at her school keeps trying
to associate her with Yuki
and it drives her crazy
I think it's kind of funny
but I don't like Yuki either
so I understand what she's going through
Mishi - March 4, 2006 10:54 PM (GMT)
Someone once told my father that he looked like Bill Gates.
My father hates Microsoft with a bloody passion.
So comparing him to Bill Gates is like comparing him to the devil.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 6, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
um... okay ._.;
upcoming weekend is my friend's b-day party
so I think I'm going to draw her a kyo picture
I already drew her a picture, but it holds
no importance, it's just a random drawing
No-Chan-San - March 6, 2006 04:58 AM (GMT)
...
I don't think you guys understand the whole "bishounen" concept! It literally means "Pretty Boy", so yeah, the guys usually look effeminate...
I'm kinda wondering now who Mishi's top 10 even are, but I think Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star is probably included. He's the least effeminate anime character I think I've ever seen. :P
I pretty much completely disagree with everything you guys are saying. Just so you know. I LOVE the dress they put Tohru in. Yeah, it's frilly. But it's a style. It's ALMOST a Lolita style, but it's yellow.. and she looks so cute in it! I love how Yuki reacts when he sees her. True, I probably wouldn't wear it. But that doesn't matter. Cuz Tohru looks so cute in it!
And, if you couldn't tell, Ayame is my absolute fav. Yeah, he dresses kinda strange, but he's so unique, I love it!
If anyone should be a girl, it's Shuuichi from Gravitation. He even has PINK hair! Stupid shonen ai/yaoi authors. They need to go away.
Anyway, why are you letting such strange things bother you? Like Yuki's hair.. geez. Mishi, you haven't even seen the whole show or read the manga so you can't really judge. It truly is one of the best series ever. It has the best character development, plot, and everything, that I've pretty much ever seen. Just don't watch it in english. ;)
Mishi - March 6, 2006 10:10 PM (GMT)
Ah... See, that may have been the problem. I *did* see it in english.
I do understand the concept of bishounen. I don't have a top 10. Just a top 6. And I haven't seen Fist of the North Star. I got a manga of it for christmas from my grandparents once, because I didn't specify the type of manga I liked, but I never actually read it. I've seen images, and none of them particularly pleased me. Guys that muscular scare me. My top six include Yami, Vash the Stampede, Millions Knives, Yakumo Fuji, Vampire Hunter D, and Zelgadis Greywers. And I'm thinking of adding Griffith to the list and making it my top seven.
Yeah, I guess I really did say something stupid there. I was trying to find a justified reason not to like Yuki. Something about him just rubs me the wrong way. I'm not the person who objected to his hair though.
And even lolita-style dresses don't have so many frills. I thought Tohru would suffocate in that dress.
I don't think the authors of Shounen ai and Yaoi should go away. They should just get more subtle. Yes, because pink hair and skimpy red pleather totally doesn't say FLAMING GAY in big letters.
I rather like Shounen Ai. I just don't like badly done shounen ai. And Gravitation is so crappy I wouldn't even use it for toilet paper.
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 6, 2006 11:01 PM (GMT)
wow, the air in this discussion is getting really tense
tYCHou - March 11, 2006 06:12 AM (GMT)
You guys are on crack. ALL the Sohma boys are pretty. Though, some of them are a bit young for me. I'll stick with the trio. Shigure...Hatori...*sighs*
And you guys really ARE nit picking at a show you don't know much about. Believe me, I have seen a LOT of anime and Fruits Basket has to be one of the best anime series I have ever seen.
So what if Yuki looks like a girl? He's still pretty young. Give him a chance to hit puberty, yo!
But don't watch it in English. Dragon Ball Z voices should NOT do shoujo. The Japanese voices rock. Momiji's voice in Japanese is SOOOOO cute! ^.^
Fang-chan - March 15, 2006 12:37 AM (GMT)
Selphie Tivrusky 5 - March 15, 2006 01:26 AM (GMT)
I love Momiji too!
he's just so adorable
I love the whole half japanese half german thing!
I'm slighty german so I think that that is just wicked kewl
KFG24 - March 15, 2006 04:09 AM (GMT)
Dragon Ball Z voices...For a shoujo?!Okay dubbers do a lot of stupid crap, but they aren't really actually that crazy are they?!If so,I will never, ever, ever, ever(goes on for awhile),watch the dubbed version of Fruits Basket!
tYCHou - March 15, 2006 05:09 AM (GMT)
*pats KFG24 on the back* Good, good. Watch it many times in japanese before attempting to check out the dub. You'll watch it for like 5 minutes at the most and turn it back. I swear you will.
Mishi - March 15, 2006 05:22 PM (GMT)
The voices grated on my ears, but we didn't have a choice. Ju Leon was the one running the viewing and he decided we were going to watch the dub.
Now Ju Leon's running for student council. Normally, I wouldn't care at all about school politics, but I'm almost tempted to vote against him, just for subjecting all the anime-lovers to those horrible, horrible voices.
KFG24 - March 16, 2006 07:53 AM (GMT)
*laughs*You should,you should!
But if I ever have to watch the dub,I hope it'll be better than the Sailor Moon dub...Though from what Tychou says I seriously doubt it...
*shudders at the thought of the SM dub*What were they smoking when they decided that all the voices needed to sound practically the same, except for a few slight differences? <_<
Stupid dubbers...
