Anybody remember reading The Count Of Monte Cristo in High School? Well guess what, it's now an anime!
For those of you who don't know, the Count of Monte Cristo is a story written by Alexander Dumas. It's about a man who was royally screwed out of his life by who he thought were his best friends and how he goes about exacting his revenge in the SINGLE GREATEST REVENGE SCHEME EVER CREATED! They did make a movie out of it a few years ago, but it sucked (IMO) and wasn't very true to the original.
The anime is a futuristic, but otherwise accurate rendition of the classic story. It starts off a good ways into the story and, thus far, hasn't focussed much on the Count himself. I'm assuming that they are going to delve more into the background of the characters later on in the series. Having read the book, I already know what to expect, and thus makes it that much more enjoyable seeing the story told anew, but I highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't read the book as well. The anime features a very "Unique" visual style that goes very well with the mood of the story, and the opening and ending songs (both of which are in English) fit the story and style perfectly.

I'm up to episode seven and there are no words to describe how utterly cool this show is. Monte Cristo is now one of my favorite characters OF ALL TIME! He's just that damn cool (And I want his jacket)!
I'm so tempted to buy some of that series; I actually just borrow it from a guy in my anime club. The character designs are awesome too, but the coloring is like Baz Luhrmann camera angles, can make you dizzy. I've attempted a few fan art pieces and I usually just draw a basic outline and use solid colors; I'd end up putting my eyes out with my pencils if I attempted to do pattern work.
I once watched a bit of the Count of Monte Cristo movie that'd come out a few years ago; you know, with Jim Caviziel. It was no use, I kept on thinking of Gankutsuou so I stopped watching. That and Hollywood's interpretation wasn't that great.
They made an anime out of Moby Dick, too.
Gankutsuou is cool. I just hope they never make an anime about any of the other Dumas novels... Except maybe The Three Musketeers.
