Title: Empathetic

Bradhadair - June 8, 2004 08:42 PM (GMT)
this is my new story, please read, review, and critique

Adrian Woods was sitting in his fourth hour Advance Physics class when it happened. She walked in. The new girl, the one everyone was talking about. He heard snippers about her in the classes conversations. From what he heard, she was a gothic girl who moved to Aponlee from New York City. She was an only child from divorced parents and her name was Sydney Colette.
When Adrian saw her, the rumors were confirmed and everyone's descriptions were correct. But what no one else mentioned was the invisible electricity that surrounded her. No one could see it. No one but Adrian. But he was not concerned about that. He knew he was different. Adrian knew it his whole life. Now he has come to accept his eccentricity.
"Class, this is our new student, Sydney Colette. She just moved here from New York. I hope you all do your best to help her adjust," said Ms. Scott ignoring the snickers of students. Ms. Scott was a middle-aged woman whose life revolved around science.
There was only two seats in the room. One in the far back infront of Chase Adams, the quarterback for the Aponlee football team, and one next to Adrian. Adrian silently hoped that she would sit infront of Chase. He hated sitting by people, it distracted him.
As if she heard him think that, then defied him, she sat next to Adrian and flung her bag to the ground. He hated her already. Not only did she sit next to him, she also smirked at him when he scowled.
"Adrian? Could you be Ms. Colette's lab partner so she could catch up to the class?"
Adrian mumbled under his breath. Just another reason not to like her. He hated having lab partners. And she seemed as unreliable as the others he was forced to have.
He decided he may as well introduce himself, despite the fact that he disliked her. She was looking at the carving and writing on the desk and he used the opportunity to look her over. She had dark brown hair with strands of lime green and magenta, pale skin with freckles on her nose, and bright green eyes without any brown or gold flecks that normally adorn green eyes. Adrian thought she would be pretty if she didn't wear so much eyeliner and mascara. She wore a black miniskirt with chains, a Slipknot shirt, and black combat boots, the look was completed with a pair of fishnets. All she needs is a spiked choker and her trashy-goth look would be complete, thought Adrian. He rolled his eyes. She looked up and met his gaze.
"What are you staring at?" she asked with a slight trace of a New York accent.
"Well according to Ms. Scott, my new lab partner who looks like Winona Ryder dressed as Marilyn Manson."
Adrian clamped his mouth shut. He didn't mean to say that. His mouth opened ready to apologize when she shocked him. She started laughing.
"Good one. At least yo made a good come back. I'm Sydney Colette, obviously. You are Adrian woods, right?"
"Yes, hello. Listen, I'm trying to pass this class and it would be really nice if oyu actually showed up when we have labs and stuff. I do not want to do everything."
"Understandable. But you do not have to worry. I am not a slacker."
"Good. Well, that's basically it. We're just starting a new unit, so you should not be that lost easily."
Adrian turned back to his book and scribbled notes on formulas and copied definitions.
Sydney put a scrap of paper on his desk, folded in half.
"In case you ever need it," she said smoothly.
He opened it and all that was on it was 7 digits and her name. Before he could say anything, the bell rang and she was gone. Adrian just shoved the scrap into his jeans and threw his books into his bag. He had to get to gym on time.

Finally updated!!!!

Sydney Colette smirked her way to her new Advance Physics Class. This school was just too much. Not only were the students judgemental and unfriendly, the teachers were too. The school seemed too perfect. So did the town. Aponlee. How lame. New York City was her home and she loved it. Everything in Aponlee moved slower. Sydney longed for the excitement and the unceasing action of The Big Apple. As a final tribute and silent protest, Sydney dressed in all black. That morning when her mother asked why she had to dress like that, she replied that she was in mourning for her old home. Her mother just laughed and went back to writing.
Madeline Colette was a French woman who immigrated to America when she was fifteen. She went to New YorkUniversity and became a semi-sucessful screenwriter. Now she was working on her first novel after a small mid-life crisis in which she decided she was unhappy as a screenwriter and being married to Sydney's father Fredrique.
Sydney stopped just before the classroom and took a calming breath. Her parents divorce hit her hard and she missed her father. She took the cool doorknob in her hand and turned it, then walked in. A middle aged blond woman was sitting in a lab coat, Sydney assmumed she was Ms. Scott.
"Ms. Scott, I'm Sydney Colette, your new student."
Ms. Scott looked up startled, "Hello, dear. Let's get you situated," she said and turned to the class. "Class, this is our new student, Sydney Colette. She just moved here from New York. I hope you all do your best in helping her adjust."
She then turned to Sydney and gestured for her to sit. For the first time she scanned the room. There were two seats. One in front of a boy in a green and silver Varsity jacket, who was probably the cutest boy she had seen in the school today. But Sydney looked at the other seat and almost stumbled at what she seen. There was the most stunningly handsome boy with black hair that was just a little too long, so a lock fell across his left eyebrow. He was unconventionally good looking. He had eyes bluer than the Pacific Ocean, where she spent each summer, yet he seemed unaware of his looks. He was dressed in dark blue jeans and a blue plaid button down shirt that made his eyes stand out more. his skin was pale, but had a honey tone, but none of this caught Sydney's attention as much as what almost caused her to initially trip over herself. What shocked her was invisible electricity, which glowed around him. It made her weak. She knew she was different, but she had built walls to hide in. But he was different. He penetrated her walls and his feelings became hers.
He doesn't want me to sit by him, she felt.
Sydney had to restrain a smile. She felt as if she was doing something wrong. She always felt like that when it happened. Finally she learned how to protect herself and others, but for some reason, this boy broke her guard down. As if wantin revenge on him for making her weak, Sydney walked to the seat next to him.
He glared at her, she just smirked, then started examining the writing on her desk. she could feel him staring at her, so she ignored him.
Just then Ms. Scott called out, "Adrian? Could you be Ms. Colette's lab partner so she could catch up to the class?"
Sydney's desk became a blur. Adrian. Sydney tried to remember if her only friend, Miranda Areda, told her anything about someone named Adrian.
It came to her in a rush.
"Adrian Woods was the most popular, gorgeous boy at Aponlee High School. Now he's the biggest outcast," said Miranda over the long weekend, when she explained about the school. "He's the same age as us. He was so popular, then one day, it was like he got tired of it, then everyone hated him. Since then, it was Sophomore year, he's been obsessed with his grades and school. Now no one talks to him."
Sydney understood how he was so popular. He had masculine beauty that was last seen in Greek sculptures, and he didn't even realize it. But all she wanted to know now was swhy he made her guard go down and why he was an outcast. Sydney realized he was still looking her over and got annoyed.
"What are you staring at?" she said in an accusing tone.
"Well, according to Ms. Scott, my new lab partner who looks like Marilyn Manson dressed as Winona Ryder," when he realized what he said, he looked shocked to say it.
Sydney just laughed. It was funnier than things she heard before, not to mention he said it to her face.
"Good one. At least you made an intelligent comeback. I'm Sydney Colette, you must be Adrian Woods."
He looked mildly shocked she heard of him.
"Yes, hello," he said. It was the least polite 'hello' she ever heard. "Listen, I'm trying to pass this class and it would be really nice if oyu actually showed up when we have labs and stuff. I do not want to do everything."
"Understandable. But you do not have to worry. I am not a slacker."
"Good. Well, that's basically it. We're just starting a new unit, so you should not be that lost easily."
Sydney looked at him with interest as he took notes in a notebook. Then she did something she never did with a guy before: give a boy her phone number.
She tore a scrap of paper and scribbled her name and new number on it, then put it on his desk.
"In case you ever need it," she said, then headed out the door as the bell rang, before he could day anything.
