Title: B+ rear bodywork
flibble - July 15, 2008 01:32 PM (GMT)
Hi all, I bought Phil Days (an ex moderator?) Dutton B+ (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170216986319&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123)
a couple of months back and have been enjoying driving and tinkering with her ever since :)
Now that I've got the engine running nearly as it should I've moved on to the appearance of the old girl, I've managed to bag a free paintjob from a friend in the spraying business and need to take the rear bodywork off (which I think is from an early phaeton?) as, at the moment, it's just a rough base of black (as you might be able to see in the Ebay photos).
I've had a good poke around and I'm struggling to see where the end umm.. ends and the rest of the car begins.
Could anyone enlighten me as to how its fixed on? ie. is it glued to the interior fibreglass where the arches are, bolted to a hard to see part of the fuel tank, hidden brakets, magic?
I tried to glean some help from andy`s rebuild photos but to no avail :(
Cheers in advance!

I think that its got an S1 chassis and S1 rear end fitted as part of its refurb - kind of triggers broom affair.
The rear section is rivet/bonded to the seat tub along the rear edge and down the wheel arch ineer edge then rivetted in the wheel arch to the alloy/chassis - also fixed inside the boot to the chassis legs.
Are you stripping it to paint then?

Cheers for the reply :)
Yes, the spray shop that it's going to is awkward to get into with a car so I thought it'd be easier to whip the bodywork off and carry it in.
I have found a few rivets that i've drilled out but as yet, nothing seems to move at all.
When you say bonded, I hope you dont mean glued as that'd kind of explain why nothings moving but also why it'll probably never move without cracking something expensive! :(
I'll have another bash tommorow :)

Hi Guys,
The Pheaton back end was installed so well on the chassis that it was a shame to take it off as part of the rebuild as we didn't think we'd get the B+ rear end back on as well. I don't know how that back end was put on in the first place but if you're taking it off anyway and would prefer a proper B+ rear end (in green, strangely) then let me know as I still have it.
Cheers

Hiya Phil, I forgot you`ve gone undercover with the Quasi alias.. ;)
I havn't seen a B+ up close but would I be right in saying that it's almost exactly the same but slightly shorter and with a narrower boot?
Hmm, it is tempting - how much ££ were you looking to get for it out of curiosity, it seems like a good idea at the moment though.
The back end was put on quite well, took 11 hours today to get the damn thing off, lol - who'd have thought that 2 sneaky hidden rivets could hold something on so solidly....
On another matter..
Had you had the carbs off recently by any chance? After driving around for a couple of days thinking, hmm - not quite as pokey as I'd hoped, I had a poke about in the engine bay and there was a half inch gap between the intake and the carbs, hehe. Just wondering if it'd been driven like this for any length of time as my wideband O2 sensor said it was running at an Air/fuel ratio of 18 at tickover, hate to think how lean it was on the move :o , just hoping no damage had occured if it'd been driven like that for any length of time - just curious!
I wont mention the 2 life saving suspension bolts with no nut on at all ;) heehee

Hi Kev,
Yes, I'm still lurking. Been away for a little while after the birth of number 2 sprog. I've replied privately about the rear panel and we can sort something out if you'd like. As for the other points I honestly hadn't noticed, sorry. I feel really embarrassed now :o
Cheers

B+ chassis is different to the S1 so you will need to do some welding to get the B+ rear end on.

Thanks for that Andy. Wasn't sure if they were a straight swap or not. Kev did say he fancied a bit of welding though :D

Ahh yes, me loves me Tig.
Got to decide what colour to paint it now, pretty sure I like the scheme it has now but I`ll eye up the Galleries just incase inspiration hits.
Oh, and no need for any embarassment, when I sold my 4x4 a few weeks back I swapped its huge mud plugger wheels over for something more roadworthy, got interupted whilst on the final wheel swap and forgot to tighten its wheel nuts up.
Poor buyer bloke got 200 yards down the street, was overtaken by his own wheel which flattened the side of a parked up mini cooper, while leaving leaving his new 4x4 carving a groove up the street with its brake disc.
That was an embarassing day
