Title: Shock Absorbers

perefouras - May 5, 2008 07:57 PM (GMT)
Hi
Living in France,I am working hard on my Phaeton s1.
I want to change the rear shocks absorbers because they seem to be old

Is there a special way to take them off ?

I did not know exactly were they come from, I think Hillman Imp but I am not sure ?

Can you tell me were I could find them in England ?

Hi, jack up the rear, support the weight of the axle and unbolt them.
Many people replace them with Avo or Gaz shocks. If you really want to replace what you have I have some which are almost new in terms of use. However, both Gaz and Avo will give you much more adjustment and more room as the spring coils much smaller in diameter. It’s the way to go if you want good handling.

Yep- Hillman Imp front shockers

No special way of removing - but ease will depend on whether or not the original builder has provided access to get to the top mounting bolt or not - Dont think there was on My B+ or S1 and had to cut a hole with a hole saw through the tub.

Hi
Unfortunately there is no room to unscrew the upper bolt, so as you say , Andy, I have to make a hole ... (As neat as possible)

I think a coil compressor tool is not necessary to remove the whole shocker. It is neccessary only if I have to separate the coil from the absorber. is it true ?

Yes you are correct you only need a spring compressor if you are stripping the shock. Even then I have managed to remove the springs on mine without using a compressor they are not that strong.
