Hi Snowy2

It's a nice car what you have :)

All what I see it's a good rebuilding and a fine job what you have done.

thanks everyone i have worked hard on it these last 6-7 weeks (only bought it 8/3/08) and could not get time off from work (i drive chemical tankers (hgv's)) plus i work an average of 65 hrs a week, all the work was done by myself, and i'm knackered now, but it has been fun, it now drives under own steam, (engine out last sunday) still aiming for MOT on saterday

Thought you all would like to know that my car went through the MOT today first try and is now back on the road, from unfinished wreck to legal car in 7 weeks! i'm knackered from doing it, hope the weather this year does not disappoint. DAVE

B) Nice one Dave,

You must be pleased after all that hard work.

I have the hub adaptors ready but haven't had a chance to look at the flywheel on the Pinto.

Cheers

Hi andy yeah dont worry to much about the flywheel, may have to change engine for a lighter one as the pinto is breaking the n/s engine mount, could still use the hub adaptors though. cheers DAVE

Hi Snowy.

It's looking good. well done. Going by the colour looks like you're preparing it for a kawasaki lump. Has anyone ever done a bike engined Dutton?

John

I still think that a Dutton is too heavy for a bike engine. But it has been done, i dont really know the results though, There was a yellow melos with a R1 on ebay a while ago and have a look here as well, Ch1ll1 was putting a vfr750 in his.

link to ch1ll1's vfr

Here's me thinking I'd be the first with a light green dutton, lol.
Bike engine looks good, but i have been offered a 2.0L Zetec with throttle bodies and performance exhaust ,as a runner in a rotten XR2 for less than £300 (its the starting price, gotta haggle yet) very tempted to bin the dog of a pinto that mine currently has, let you know how i get on.

Jaybe - May 12, 2008 04:07 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the info Mr G. I think I would agree with Jonno about the weight issue. I think although bike engines can push out a lot of BHP they lack the necessary torque to propel the Dutton's weight swiftly enough.

jonno - May 12, 2008 06:54 PM (GMT)
2.0L Zetec with throttle bodies sounds more tempting ;) (any idea of what throttle bodies and engine management ?)

Shame the exhaust is on the other side to a pinto, so you need a new hole !!

I think i'd stick with the pinto for a while and enjoy the car through the summer and maybe do the zetec convertion over the winter.

I'm really missing having a toy on the road at the moment...must find some time to play with the Legerra :(

oh and on the bike engine thing there's a mk2 escort with one in, so maybe it would be ok ;)

CBR1000RR engined mk2 escort

Wow  what a surprise, just looked at the ebay photos on this site and the first car, fdw 935 v is my old malaga b+. its the same colour, the 1600gt engine is still there, as is the wiring loom i fitted, and the fiesta thermostat housing with fan switch, along with the washer bottle and expansion bottle and i suspect the radiator in the nose cone. Also the ****pit ally trims and the little filler in the "door tops" to rear wings are my work, whats different are the rear lights, but the fuel cap is as i left it. the dash is different, and some if not all of the interior is newer (i left it similar but less padded) the front wings are what the wife wanted me to do to the car before i sold it in feb 2000. oh! and i only had a webber downdraft carb on it, She looks very nice (well as of 2005 anyway) lets hope that its still out there and in use.
Its made my day to see my old car, and so much of my work still there as well. its good to see the difference in the under bonnet scuttle top area when looking at my S1.

Oh and bike engines and torque is a myth that they have none.

It's about gearing.

The killer with bike engines and weight is that the clutch is only rated at the engine torque - not the torque delivery via a much lower axle ratio and small wheels with a far greater contact area and rotational mass coupled with the extra weight/grip.

What also kills bike clutches/gearboxes is the shock loads - you cant dump the clutch on a bike because the consequences are well known. No such issues with cars and no cushion in the drive train eventually all those shock loading find the weak link in the chain - if you upgrade the clutch then the shock just gets moved along.

Cheers

Andrew
