Title: Offy manifold mods
Description: V8 fettling

Andy S - March 15, 2008 06:18 PM (GMT)
A few shots of Seans Offy manifold modified for Dutton fitment.

The adaptor has been matched to the manifold as it had some odd angles from the carb mounting that I did not feel were beneficial to air flow.

The other mod was milling the manifold to reduce the angle of the carb mounting block - its usually at 5 degrees and is to have the carb level when in a Rangie or similar which is at a far steeper angle that in a kit. I have milled the manifold down to about a 2 degree angle so that the carb is flat when in the S1.

Soon to be fitted and test fired B)

Should be a bit more effective with the holley 390 bolted to it than the existing 30 year old manifold and somewhat used SU's

Hi Andy, looks a good job. Have you any mods on the ignition side of things? Im thinking of putting a megajolt on my Pinto and running with bike carbs (bit more room without the dizzy) and had thought about similar on the rover v8 when its back together.

Although I would really like to give megajolt a try I have enough to be getting on with at the moment so I have just used one step up from the dizzy and gone with Luminition systems.

However I will be giving megasquirt and spark a go on the Alfa engine but thats a fair way off.

If looking to remove the dizzy just remember that you need a dummy dizzy/drive system in its place on both the Pinto and Rover to drive the oil pump.

Hi Andy, good point re the dizzy drives. They are both nearly new being purchased by the previous owners so I will be on the look out for some second hand examples which I can cut bown and modify.

Ive always thought that two banks of VFR750 carbs would look good on a Rover V8 (my last bike was a VFR750 really great hi reving engines and technically excellant although a bit underpowered for a kit car). I really like the idea behind megasquirt even though the processor is now quite old it seems to offer quite a few advantages over the older factory injection systems.

Cheers

Hi Barry,

The best thing with the Mega stuff is the open source and great wealth of amateur input covering pretty much all possible installations.

I am sure on You tube there is a rover V8 on bike carbs being run up - However as even the best stock rover heads will struggle to provide enough air for 200BHP without some very trick and expensive parts thrown at them its all a waste of time and only good for the bling factor.

Staged heads and associated parts for 250BHP will cost well over £1500 and thats still within the scope of 390/465 Holley - 600 Holleys are even cheaper!!

A Holley and Offy can be installed for less than £250 and fit under the bonnet of a Pheaton/B+ without any holes giving the game away B)

I could have a old Pinto dizzy about somewhere you would be welcome to.

Being someone who just can't make his mind up I have bought a pair of DCOEs and a set of R1 carbs. I'd like to go with the R1s but the cost of the manifold from Bogg Bros at £200 is a bit steep. I will probably stick the webers on for now and swap for the R1s when I am a bit more flush. I also want to try megajolt but am a bit wary as electronics and soldering is not really my thing but I'm ordering up the bits and I'll give it a go.
