Title: Pinto camshaft choice

graham g - September 22, 2007 12:05 PM (GMT)
During the winter I plan to fit R1 carbs to the S4, at the minute its running standard cam, head has been ported. I may change the cam if funds allow.

Question is what would be the best cam to fit, I was thinking kent fr33 or piper 285 or newman phase4. Really I need a cam for fast road and some track day use still driveable (nothing too lumpy).

any suggestions greatly appreciated

Graham

I had a fr33 in the S3 with a 2.1 pinto, and that was fine. Still very drivable in traffic and pulled well to the red line.

I belive the fr32 is the fast road one though.

Being a reletively light car you can get away with having reasonably radical profile but Vizard suggests that the best way to get good performance from the Pinto is valve lift and not so much duration - there is a 134 grind cam that is a stock upgrade for the later EFI engines that works particularly well and is well worth looking into.
