Title: Pinto flywheel
qplate - July 11, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
Having had my recent problems with sorting out my timing :( , I now have a worse problem to contend with.
My new starter motor works as it should. The problem is that it dosn't spin the flywheel. I could hear the starter spinning freely. Occaisonaly it would catch the flywheel and let go again.
Anyway, i took the starter off and found a lot of swarf, indicating worn teeth on the motor, flywheel or both. I took the motor to a factors to compare with a new one and the wear is minimal. That leaves the flywheel.
Are pinto flywheels prone to this or is it just wear and tear on an old flywheel?
Either way, i need a new one. Anybody know where i can get one?

There are 2 types of starter; pre-engaged and inertia. Unfortunately they require different ring-gear on the flywheel. You may have a mis-match.

Flywheels
No not prone to it at all.
Got a Sierra flywheel you can have for free - and I also have another old RS2000 one thats much lighter in the back of the shed for £15 If I recall you are in the Nuneaton area so I could drop it off if necessary.
I cant remeber inertia's ever being used on Pinto's - more likely the pinion gear fork is bent or damaged and not throwing the pinion out for full engagement or just being the wrong type for the distance.

Andy, the Sierra one would do the job just fine. Thanks very much for the offer.
I am actually in Coventry, not far off J3 or J2 of the M6. I could easily arrange to meet you somewhere convenient.
I will send you a pm with my phone number if thats easier.
Many thanks

Not forgot you and did get the mail - I will take the flywheel off the engine this weekend and I am in the office in Nuneaton on Monday so will take it with me and see if we can meet up at some point.
Cheers
Andrew

Thanks Andrew,

Thanks for the flywheel Andy.
Finally got around to fitting it today. The teeth on the old one are definately worn compared to this one.
Whilst the starter motor was out, i did as you suggested and tested the motor and the throw of the pinion. Both worked perfectly. I put it all back together and it spins ok but i cannot hear it throwing the pinion out and no attempt to spin the engine.
I have run out of time today now, (commited this evening unfortunately).
Where does the wire go to? The small one on the starter motor. I know its behind the dash but where to?
Hopefully, i wil have more time tomorrow and a heads up in advance would be very useful.
