Title: Brake ident and advice
james - March 17, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)
Hello I have just brought my first Dutton and I am after a bit of information.
I’ve not really got a lot of history on the car but the brakes definitely need some attention and don’t really know what they have come off.
I went to my local car shop and managed to get some pads which they thought would fit and they said they were off some type of early ford cortina/ escort mk2. The other problem I have is the seals on the callipers are badly perished. Does anyone know what the callipers are and where I could get a rebuild kit for them or should i just look to replace them.
The Dutton has a rover V8 with a holley carb so I will be needing good brakes.
Cheers for any help
James

Hi James & welcome to the forum :)
You don't say what your Dutt is, I'm guessing it's a Phaeton S1 or S2 but we could do with a bit more info...
If you wan't to upgrade the brakes I'd fit a servo assisted master cylinder and princess four pot calipers, I've also fitted a brake bias valve to stop the back locking under heavy braking

Cheers Mick
I think its a phaeton S3 although it looks different from all the ones on the dutton owners club pages so I am not entirely sure.
To be honest it has been a bit neglected before I got it and I didn't even run as the carb and engine were full of water.
This is the first car I have done up so there is quite a steep learning curve. Still I am enjoying it and hopefully one day I will get to drive it!

Here are some more minus the nosecone and bonnet. This was taken the first day i got if you loo carefully you can see the snails that were living in under the bonnet

The font of the chassis looks very much like my S3, so the brakes are quite possibly mk1 escort  .
Hopefully Andy will be along, he'll know ;)

Interesting car there James someone has certainly been busy over time. looks like it started life as an S3 or S4.
So looks like - shortened struts for the front which means one of two options - MK1 or MK2 Escort discs.
The Calipers look to me like Escort MK1 - early discs - you need to measure the diameter of the discs - my guess is they will be 8.6 inches early MK1 later cars had bigger discs and callipers.
Rather than rebuild those old brakes you may want to think about a change to the bigger discs or the Capri vents you will need new struts hubs etc and a new rack- unless you go for Capri struts then the rack and TRE's will fit.
If you wnat to rebuild - I am reasonably sure that the same calipers are used on the back end of 740 Volvo's
Cheers

crikey sounds like quite a job, remember i am a newbie. I will try and do a bit more research and see if i can find out a bit on the stuf mentioned.
I will measure the disk tomorrow and post the results
Cheers for all the responses/advice on this it's definitely a challenge.

Hopefully my brake problems are over I have just bought a complete set of new calipers and pads for the car.
It turns out the front disks are escort and the rear disks are off a scorpio. Hopefully these will be sufficient braking for the car.
Cheers for all the advice I will keep you all up to date with the developments of the car.
I have joined the owners club now - just a bit worried as mine doesn't look like any other dutton. Hopefully people won't hold this against me or are there purists out there that frown upon this sort of car?

Glad you got the brakes sorted James,
Have you got the engine running yet? More to the point, have you driven it yet?
Mick.

The engine runs and my god it's loud, but there are still lots of things still to do for the mot so i havent taken it out on the road yet. hopefully get it out this year though.
