Title: Decisions, Decisions, Which Tyre?

Breadline Racing - February 15, 2003 12:22 PM (GMT)
Yokohama A032R or A021R? At present I have the A021R's and am quite happy with them, but I've just come off the phone to Demon Tweeks who suggested that I may be better off with the A032R's as the compound is slightly softer and the tread depthis not full (only 5mm) The car is a hill climb and sprint car, doesn' see anything but sealed surfaces, but must remain in road legal trim to qualify for the championship. The car is occasionally used on the road and I'm more than alittle worried that the shallower tread depth will scrub out very quickly. Both tyres are the same price. What do you think?

:ph43r:

Looks like the A032R comes in 3 compounds Hard, Soft and Super Soft and is specific for dry track work - Limited to soft and supersoft on 13 inch rims from the tweeks catalogue. 205/60/13's in super soft look like a good recipe for testing the axle location points. ;)

The A021R appears to be a more tarmac rally formula and very limited sizes in The tweeks book - The 185/70/13 s are what will be on my road car for sure.

For prices also give Cyril Wilcox and sons a try - usually very good deals on Yoki's - loads of race experience as well.

the caterham guys swear by the Avons - no idea what the prices are though.

Cheers

Hi Andy,
I think your right in what you say about the A012R's, I hjave them on at the moment and they have served me very well in both wet and dry conditions. I would havew already ordered them from DT's if they hadn't complicated things by offering me a choice  Even when these tyres are scubbed out, as my fronts are now (Just on the right side of legal in case any plod are reading this  ) I've just got back from a blast around Dorset with a bunch of TVR's, great day, bloody cold with the roof off though!!!! Check the pictures http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bob_lodge/dor...orsetdawdle.htm

Steve,

How are you getting on with that anti dive kit? -

Progress on mine.

I have just been cutting and shutting the chassis of the S4 to fit some Caterham Bilstien shocks I picked up cheap - You would not believe the hassle  - every bolt and bush was seized solid on the top suspension mounts - had to cut them out. Rubbing down and painting the chassis as I work from front to back - undercoat with red oxide type anti rust then top coat grey gloss in the best race car aircraft tradition - shows cracks

At least the front suspension will be quieter now that the springs are not constanstly rubbing and binding in those mis aligned mis positioned - mal mis  muddled turret things.

I have decided on 100mm chassis clearance for the road car which at the moment gives 50mm or so for the sump :( - a modified sump is the order of the day I think. the fornt will have the suspension pick-ups sorted so that the brackets are at least somewhat parallel. Poly bushes will be made up for it and sme suitable springs organised - the standard caterham springs are very soft.

Does anyone know what the RS 2000 track rod end is - I have converted to some Mk2 uprights on the S4 and the MK1 rack is imperial and has a smaller TRE than the Metric MK2 was wondering is the RS2 has a bigger taper end but the Imperial thread? the conversion allows me to use bigger brakes - my S4 had tiny 8.5" 12 inch wheel van brakes - I now have 2.8i vents on the front - gave me another little head ache - the wheel studs are different - so the back axle needs modifying now to take the later larger metric bolts as well - still no worry as these were due to be changed to fit longer studs to take some 20mm spacers.

Once the front end is done and its back rolling the body comes off to Five link the rear end - Not that I have anything against the leaf springs - its just the five link gives much more ****pit space as the seat can go back past that stupidly located spring hanger.

Oh keeping the slot mags now - they are 6x13 and are really light - also polished up like new - look really retro on the Black S4 B)

The Spint / Hillclimb car :ph43r: will start to get sorted after the S4 - this will run 75mm chassis clearance - this already has fully adjustable Spax alround and a fully rose jointed back end - The panard location is a bit suspect as it drops from the upper rear chassis rail - there is no lower one - to the axle, which is not good. I will add some steel to provide a new bracket location.

The front suspension needs looking at - More distorted bracketry :o - seems to be the norm- whether this gets fully adustable rose jointed suspension or just correctly measured brackets and poly bushes is in the melting pot.

The S4 seams to have some anti dive geometry with an angle on the top wishbone - the S3 is parallel - need to investigate this further.

Also got some gas struts to install some auto bonnet lifts - will take a bit to work out the loaction points but I think I am there.

Anyway I have warmed up enough now to venture back out and do a bit more .

Boy, sounds like you've been busy! I've finally bitten the bullet and ordered my new tyres :ph43r: And the winner is.........The Yokohama A048R! Hey, wait a minute! :o That wasn't on the list! Well, no, it wasn't, but talking to the guys at Demon Tweeks it was put forward after my choice of the A021Rhad been rejected due to the fact that there arn't any available at present, and the A032 was just too risky in the wet, which lets face it, even the summer can be pretty wet in this country :( . They should be here on Wednesday, well they'd better be, cause I'm out on a club Navagational scatter on Friday night, and the "Slicks" on the front will be less than aeptable :D

Andy (doc3781) - February 17, 2003 08:24 PM (GMT)
If you were worried about the A032R in the wet the A048R should prove interesting as they have even less tread :o

They are off my list as there are no 185/70 or 195/65 or 205/60 in the 13" sizes. :(

Are you sure the 48's are better than the 32's in the wet because that would really surprise me.

What wheels you running ? - 14x6 and going for 195/60's - 201mm width of sticky stuff B)

Cheers

I know, I know, but the A048R was two things the A021R and the A032R weren't, namely the A048R is a much better tyre in the dry than the A021R which tends to get too hot unless its wet, and since speaking to some people who drive in Autocross, I've been persuaded that the A032R is not a lot of use at either the wet or dry, too much of a compromise. So, in summary you really need a set of wets (A021R) and a set of dry's (A048R) but if you can't stretch to that the A048R seem to be the way to go. The guy I've just got of the phone to, said the cars racing on A048R's at Lyden on Sunday were going much quicker in the dry patches and not much slower on the wet bits than guys on A021R's. Fingers crossed, I'll let you know how we get on. Simon. :ph43r: Oh, the second thing they are is, AVAILIBLE!, which the other two are not, and we're out to play Friday night ;)

Simon,

Don't know where I got Steve from

If the 48's are the muts nuts I have to hope they get some more 13" sizes sorted out of bite the bullet and get some bigger wheels and go lower profile. B)

Might see what special deals Wicox have on for 48,s and TRW's

Cheers

Totally confused now - I thought Simon spoke to me about the anti dive kit on the phone - I must be going a bit loopy as I cant remeber speaking to you Steve although it may have happened - Me head is on backwards at the mo.

I always get like this when I can't put faces to names/situations.

Will all be clear by the end of the year I am sure -

Cheers all

Andrew :D

Hi Andy,
I did speak to you about the anti dive kit on the phone, it's obviously a very popular addition. . As for the fitting of it onto my S3, what a palava! The kit consists of a C section steel channel with 3 oversize, approx double width, anti roll bar mounts, one at each end and one in the middle. The whole thing apparently bolts straight to the original anti roll bar mounts of an Escort but my plan was to weld the whole thing to the chassis of the S3.
I had put aside a saturday morning t do the job, but after offering the new part up, it turned out to be a whole days hard graft! The C section fouled the electric fan shroud and as neither the roll bar or radiator could be moved the only option was to cut the new mountins off the Channel and weld them on as seperate peices, only 2 of them could be used, one each side, and had I known this in advance,I could have saved myself about £20 because Burton Power sell them as a pair for £27! ******! Anyway, they do the job just fine and I have a spare for the next time we hit HARD! On further inspection of the damage caused on the road stage friday night, the radius arm is really not well and the hanger is very bent, but we did come down VERY hard indeed and to be honest I'm suprised that more damage wasn't sustained. Are you going to Stafford? If so Which day, hope to see you there. Simon.
