Title: fitting 2ltrpinto to a melo

I am haveing trouble makeing a 2ltrpinto and typr 9 box fit because the tunnel seems to small, can anyone tell me how this is done?

Best bet is to get along to Stafford show and have a look and ask.
Pinto's are quite a common fitment into s3/4's which have a similar chassis to the melos and i beleive the build manual lists both engines - do yuou have the build manual? - so you should have very few problems once you have modified the gearbox and engines mounts - Type 9 five speed needs some considerable mods to the chassis to get it in though.
What was there before? - to give us some idea where you are starting - and also do you have access to cutting and welding equipment? give us an idea what you are capable of.
The more infromatiuon you can give the more likely it is that we can offer assistance.

It was a 1.3 xflow and 4 speed box, the problem is that when i put the gearbox mounting part over the metal rail then lift the engine level, the gearbox is touching hard upon the tunnel, theres 2 options i could take, either cut the rail and drop the gearbox lower or cut the top of the transmision tunnel and make it higher which will give me more room to lift the engine and gearbox. what do u's think?

I cut the chassis rails - welded in new metal and dropped the box so the engine was in the same place - well almost I also moved it back an inch - mainly because mine is an S4 pheaton and could ill afford the extra height in the engine bay as the rocker cover os close enough to the bonnet as it is.
With the five speed box the gearbox mounting is about 3 inches or so further back so if you try and position the gearbox in the same mounting it pushes every thing forward that amount - the sump ends up hitting the front cross member.
To move the box back so its in the same position the mounting is in the middle of the first centre cross member I cut and stepped this cross member and fitted the smaller gearbox mount from the MK2/3 Cortina. so that the box sits at the correct height (low) in the chassis.
The little crossflow box is much smaller that the type 9 anyway and you may find that you need to releive the tunnel in a couple of places anyway - my S4 had a couple of places trimmed to give clearance on the bell housing and gearbox. but only small mods.

Just had a look, if i lower the gearbox then lower the engine so that its level the sump is gonna hit the front cross member any ideas?, also wot do u mean stepped?

OK
Are you locating the gearbox mounting in the same position as the original ?- If so this pushes the engine and gearbox forward by over 3 1/2 inches - note the Pinto is longer than the X-flow and the sump will then foul the front x-member. By what you describe this is what you are doing.
Stepped - basically I cut an inch out of the back of it ( face toward rear of car) and then welded a 1" square tube support brace to the engine bay side of it - this allowed the gearbox mounting to be located in the correct position for the Type 9 gearbox - i.e about 4 odd inches further back than the four speed. - If I placed the box futher back I would have had to cut the bulkhead apart and if I placed it forward then I would have to completely remove and refabricated the cross member that the original mounting posts are welded to.
To make life easy on yourself you may be better off getting a four speed from a Pinto as the gearbox mounting is the same as the x-flow position and have a bit of fun with Pinto power until you are in a position to cut and weld the chassis to correctly position the 5 speed gearbox mounting.
Sorry but the Digi is up the shoot otherwise I would post some pictures on my site

I have already did a dutton pheaton with this setup, its just the tunnel is smaller than the pheaton and im finding that i cant lift the engine anymore other wise the gearbox is going to be catching the top of the tunnel and i cant really lower the engine otherwise the sump is going to hit the front rail.
If i lower the gearbox, i cant lower the engine aswell because the sump is going to hit the crossmember, so the engine and gearbox wont be level

You must move the gearbox mounting as described and explained above.

does the viscous fan have to be taken off and an electric 1 installed because there isnt much room?
