Title: sierra irs in phaeton S2
Description: has anyone done it?

Hi
has anyone fitted sierra IRS in a phaeton before? if so any advice? what are the hurdles to look out for? how did they do it? etc.
Also does anyone know what sort of power they take as I am hooking it up to a 3.9 v8, I was thinking I would probably use an lsd version from one of the larger engine models (xr4I etc).
whats your advice?
Big Dave

I'm sure someone fitted the sierra IRS into a melos somewhere - had to cut it down the middle and add about 4/6 inches iirc.
LSD Should take upto 350 - The XR4i does'nt have an LSD btw - LSD's are fitted to the 4x4's (XR4x4/GLS/GHIA etc) :)
Welcome to the forum :)

Steve fitted XR4x4 running gear into a melo's by widening the chassis and body
Link with some pics :)
So it can be done, just might take a while !

Sorry, welcome as well
Had a little think on this and i know the Robin Hood 2B uses the whole Sierra rear and i think that the Tiger Cat does as well.
I'll have a look round at wheel bases when i get a bit of spare time ;)
(You might need to shorten drive shafts, but if Robin Hood or Tiger do a certain size it might be a cheaper option to use them )

thanks guys, that's some top information.
And thanks for the welcome, I bought the car about 4 years ago but since then have got married had 2 children and built an extension so the car has been neglected a fair bit.
I have been looking for seats that fit in the chasis and also fit me and have not had much luck so adding some width makes a lot of sense for me.
how would I go about the widening job? I am guessing I would do it one side at a time whilst the other side is held rigid to the front in order to ensure that the chassis ends up straight, is this right?
Just had a second read and I think all of the chassis was widened, so what would the effect on handling be if I just did the back?
thanks

There is a local guy to me with a much modified S3 running a tuned V8 - I am pretty sure that he has full width Sierra shafts and the width issue has been dealt with by changig the offset of the wheels from the usual Dutton Zero offset to a -38 type wheel - The Stock Escort Axle is to narrow for the bodywork anyway so a full width Sierra back end may not have the width issue that you you think.
Its worth looking at the Maxda MX5 back end as a donor as well - may be easier.

been looking for an axle on ebay and found this 130258465004 would I be able to use this but replace the diff with an lsd version or would the driveshafts and hubs need changing as well?
cheers

You could use it but it would be best to pick up a whole lsd back end as driveshafts are different. None lsd are push in (tripod)
Lsd are bolt on (Lobro) - You can mix and match the joints at the ends of the shafts to make hybrids if required i.e tripod inner joints to run a none lsd diff with lobro outers to run discs or visa versa (The seven in my signature is running an lsd with bolt on lobro inner joints with outer tripods joints and drums)
Be aware that cosworth diff flanges and driveshafts are bigger that the standard lobro diff flanges and driveshafts (xr4x4/ghia/gls etc) so are not interchangable
